10 inventions that wiped out businesses

The forward march of technology is both unforgiving and unstoppable. As it mercilessly weeds out the old in favor of the new, once-beloved products and services become less favored by consumers, while others simply become obsolete.

It’s always been this way. The horse and buggy was once the dominant means of travel for Americans, but once the automobile was invented formerly solvent buggy makers found themselves out of a job.
This dynamic repeats itself whenever an invention comes along that significantly improves on a previous one. It’s particularly true when the invention offers convenience and ease of use. What follows is a list of products and services that became so indispensable to consumers that they instantly lost interest in their previous favorites.
What are some inventions that killed other products and services? lets find out.

Apple iPod

The iPod is a portable media player introduced by Apple in 2001. Prior to the iPod, the Sony Walkman was the most popular music player for anyone who wanted to listen to music on the go. The Walkman was somewhat bulky, however, and the musical selection was limited to however many 90-minute cassettes its owner could stuff into a fanny pack.
The iPod shrunk both the musical format and the device used to play songs to a single object about the size of a credit card. Some models, such as the 160-gigabyte iPod Classic, can store 50 days’ worth of music. PC World magazine said the iPod had ‘irrevocably altered the landscape for portable audio players,’ and indeed it so outpaced sales of the cassette-playing Walkman the latter simply couldn’t compete. The Walkman was discontinued in October 2010.

Amazon Kindle

Amazon.com reported it sold more e-books than paperback books during the last quarter of 2010. So while it still may be too early to say e-books have overtaken real books with consumers, the popularity of the Amazon Kindle e-reader suggests a mass consumer exodus to digital from paper books may be underway.
It’s not hard to understand why the Kindle and other e-readers are so popular. The device is smaller than a magazine and can store up to 3,000 books, all while weighing less than eight ounces , as in the case of the Kindle Touch. Compared to storing 3,000 hardcover copies, there’s simply no contest.

Email

Email is a ubiquitous part of everyday life for most people in the industrialized world. In a bygone era sending correspondences required having stamps and envelopes on hand, finding a U.S. Postal Service mailbox to send the letters and then waiting long stretches of time for a response.
Thanks to email, the most fleeting thought can now be sent instantly to multiple parties, and waiting to hear back even 10 minutes is sometimes considered agonizing. With the type of instant gratification email provides, it is unsurprising the U.S. Postal Service has seen a precipitous decline in business since 2007, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Apple iPhone

The mobile phone was a revolutionary invention. Without the constraint of wires, telephone users were free to make and receive calls on the go. It had an incalculable effect on both personal and business life by allowing its owner to close a big sale and then reach the babysitter, all while sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Traditional cellphones, which simply make and receive calls, are now being crowded out of the marketplace by smartphones, specifically Apple’s iPhone. This device not only makes calls but sends and receives emails, plays music and videos, takes pictures, and supports myriad applications . The standard cellphone has since experienced a marked decline in sales, while the iPhone and other so-called smartphones have seen steady increases.

Netflix

When the VCR made home video a reality in American households, rental outlets such as Blockbuster did a brisk business. That all came to a grinding halt, however, when a new service was launched called Netflix. Founded in 1997, its business model as a subscription-based service revolutionized the home video market. Instead of taking out individual titles for a fixed length of time, Netflix simply mailed them to your house.
Part of Netflix’s success is attributable to the absence of late fees. Subscribers could keep DVDs for as long as they wanted without ever being assessed extra charges, the bane of the video renter’s existence. Blockbuster simply couldn’t keep up with the competition and in September 2010 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Digital Word Processors

People of a certain age still remember the staccato sound of a typewriter. For years it was the device of choice for anybody who needed to present neat and orderly text, whether in a term paper, a business proposal or a resume.
In the 1970s, the first word processors were introduced. Since they weren’t much more than a keyboard with a monochrome monitor and a memory card, they didn’t pose much of a threat to the typewriter. In the 1980s, however, user-friendly computer programs such as Microsoft Word came along, and today it’s the most dominant word processing software on the market.
In 2009, Microsoft claimed that approximately half a billion people use the Microsoft Office suite, a software package that includes Word. By contrast, seattlepi.com reported the last manual typewriter factory in the world was down to its last 500 units. So get them while they last.

Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI)

For decades, special effects in movies were created through a variety of handmade techniques, such as matte paintings and stop-motion animation. Violent action sequences required the use of controlled pyrotechnics and dedicated stunt players, many of whom faced hazards to life and limb. At times they even had deadly results: Stunt actress Sonja Davis was killed during a scene on the set of the Eddie Murphy film ‘Vampire in Brooklyn.’
This all changed with the advent of computer-generated imagery, or CGI. The 1991 film ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ was an early example of the technology, and in just two years it had evolved by leaps and bounds, as the visual effects in 1993′s ‘Jurassic Park’ attest. While many filmmakers still prefer the look of live visual effects, CGI is now widely used and it has opened up a world of possibilities unthinkable using past techniques. After all, ‘Avatar’ just wouldn’t have worked if it had been rendered using claymation.

Electronic Commerce

In the past, shopping was an experience that almost always necessitated rubbing elbows with fellow consumers. If it had to take place on a major shopping day, such as the day after Thanksgiving, you risked getting trampled and sometimes found the very item you wanted to buy was sold out.
As Internet use became widespread, however, it’s become less necessary for consumers to subject themselves to the commercial equivalent of the Running of the Bulls. ‘Black Friday’ is now followed three days later by ‘Cyber Monday,’ a term that entered the national lexicon thanks to its use in a 2005 press release from the National Retail Federation that showed increasing electronic commerce on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, brick-and-mortar stores have reported consistently mediocre ‘Black Friday’ sales.

Apple iTunes

iTunes is a program that plays digital music and, more important, features an online store where music can be purchased and immediately downloaded, along with games, podcasts, movies and ringtones. It was introduced by Apple in 2001, the same year the iPod made its debut. The music industry is still trying to recover from its effects.
While baby boomers have been reluctant to reject physical media such as compact discs, younger generations have embraced digital music. In 2008, their business helped make the iTunes Store the number one music retailer in the U.S. Meanwhile, downloadable music has been devastating to brick-and-mortar music stores such as Tower Records, Sam Goody and Virgin Megastores, all of which saw their U.S. operations shut down by 2009.

Online Travel Agencies

Traditional travel agencies featuring actual human beings are unlikely to go away entirely, but they have seen a large decline in their business in recent years due to the advent of travel websites including Kayak, Expedia and Orbitz. The websites offer recommendations by other tourists, guide books, online forums and, of course, bookings.
Some 70 million people used an online travel agency just in July 2006, and Expedia.com reported almost $3 billion in revenue in 2008. The online agencies have had a negative impact on traditional travel agencies, as agents find themselves being the middleman who’s cut out of the action as the online agencies sell directly to Internet users.

Apple slammed over iPhone, iPad location tracking

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Privacy watchdogs are demanding answers from Apple Inc. about why iPhones and iPads are secretly collecting location data on users -- records that cellular service providers routinely keep but require a court order to disgorge.
It's not clear if other smartphones and tablet computers are logging such information on their users. And this week's revelation that the Apple devices do wasn't even new -- some security experts began warning about the issue a year ago.
But the worry prompted by a report from researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden at a technology conference in Santa Clara, Calif., raises questions about how much privacy you implicitly surrender by carrying around a smartphone and the responsibility of the smartphone makers to protect sensitive data that flows through their devices.
Much of the concern about the iPhone and iPad tracking stems from the fact the computers are logging users' physical coordinates without users knowing it -- and that that information is then stored in an unencrypted form that would be easy for a hacker or a suspicious spouse or a law enforcement officer to find without a warrant.
Researchers emphasize that there's no evidence that Apple itself has access to this data. The data apparently stays on the device itself, and computers the data is backed up to. Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment by The Associated Press.
Tracking is a normal part of owning a cellphone. What's done with that data, though, is where the controversy lies.
A central question in this controversy is whether a smartphone should act merely as a conduit of location data to service providers and approved applications -- or as a more active participant by storing the data itself, to make location-based applications run more smoothly or help better target mobile ads or any number of other uses.
Location data is some of the most valuable information a mobile phone can provide, since it can tell advertisers not only where someone's been, but also where they might be going -- and what they might be inclined to buy when they get there.
Allan and Warden said the location coordinates and time stamps in the Apple devices aren't always exact, but appear in a file that typically contains about a year's worth of data that when taken together provide a detailed view of users' travels.
"We're not sure why Apple is gathering this data, but it's clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations," they wrote in a blog posting announcing the research.
Allan said in an email to the AP that he and Warden haven't looked at how other smartphones behave in this regard, but added there's suspicion that phones that run Google Inc.'s Android software might behave in a similar way and is being investigated.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Alex Levinson, a security expert, said the tracking Apple's devices do isn't new -- or a surprise to those in the computer forensics community.
The Apple devices have been retaining the information for some time, but it was kept in a different form until the release of the iOS 4 operating software last year, Levinson, technical lead for the Katana Forensics firm, wrote on his blog.
Through his work with law enforcement agencies, Levinson said he was able to access the location data in older iPhones and warned about the issue over a year ago. The location data is now easier to find because of a change in the way iPhone applications access the data, he said.
"Either way, it is not secret, malicious, or hidden," Levinson wrote. "Users still have to approve location access to any application and have the ability to instantly turn off location services to applications inside the settings menu on their device."
The existence of the location-data file on the phone is alarming because it's unencrypted, the researchers said, which means that anyone with access to the device can see it.
Charlie Miller, a prominent iPhone hacker, said a security change that Apple made last month would make extracting the file from the phone in a remote attack very difficult. Even if an attacker were to break into someone's phone looking for the file, he wouldn't have the right privileges to access the file.
The data is "pretty well-protected on the phone," Miller, principal security analyst with Independent Security Evaluators, said in an interview.
"On the phone, they take a lot of precautions." He said. "It's sort of frightening in the sense that it's there, and it's full of information about where you've been, but the good news is it's not easy to get to."
But it's a different matter when the data is transferred to another computer in a backup. If the backup computer is infected with malicious software, the file could easily be located and sent to the hacker. A way to protect against that is to encrypt the iPhone backup through iTunes, the researchers said.
The issue has prompted several members of Congress to write letters to Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., to answer questions about the practice.
Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., said it raises "serious privacy concerns," especially for children using the devices, since "anyone who gains access to this single file could likely determine the location of a user's home, the businesses he frequents, the doctors he visits, the schools his children attend, and the trips he has taken -- over the past months or even a year."
Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., questioned whether the practice may be illegal under a federal law governing the use of location information for commercial purposes, if consumers weren't properly informed.
"Apple needs to safeguard the personal location information of its users to ensure that an iPhone doesn't become an iTrack," he said in a statement. "Collecting, storing and disclosing a consumer's location for commercial purposes without their express permission is unacceptable and would violate current law."
Apple shares rose $9.20, or 2.7 percent, to $351.71 on the strength of the company's latest quarterly financial results, which showed Apple's net income nearly doubled, in large part on strength of iPhone sales.

IPAD is tax claimable

Did you know that Ipad  is claimable under the RM3000 computer tax rebate??
However Iphone is NOT claimable.
The rationale is that Ipad is claimable because it is a computer/tablet that does not have any traditional phone call function. (that needs coverage station). Luckily Skype or other VOIP is not considered as a "phone call function".
Another thing is that Data Service Plan for smart phones is also subject to tax reduction relief up to RM500 under the broadband subscription relief!! besides the usual Streamyx.

10 iPad Games Worth Paying For

1. Civilization Revolution

If you’ve played any version of Sid Meier’s award-winning Civilization franchise, you’ll be instantly familiar with the iPad app. It compares very favorably with the versions of Civilization Revolution that brought the original PC strategy series to consoles, and will have a very small learning curve for anyone who has played the title on other platforms.
If you’re not already familiar with the franchise, it may be easier to think of Civilization as a modern-day version of Risk, in which you choose a historical figure to lead your civilization in a turn-based scaled progression of time. As you turn your tiny village into a thriving metropolis, animated advisers help guide you through the finer points of diplomacy with your adversaries and scientific advancement through research. Unlike Risk, however, there is more than one path to victory — in addition to world domination, you can also win a match by technological advancement, cultural growth, or economic achievement.
Several difficulty levels allow you to scale up as you master the various aspects of the game. If you’re already a fan of Civilization or the strategy and management genre in general, our only caveat is the many hours you may lose to this $12.99 title.
Get it: Civilization Revolution for $12.99

2. N.O.V.A. HD

Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance (N.O.V.A) HD reminds us of a certain other four-letter space FPS franchise and that’s not at all a bad thing. If you’re looking for a Halo-esque sci-fi shooter for your iPad, it’s definitely worth giving N.O.V.A. a try.
The game controls are simple and intuitive, with a virtual pad supplying character movement, finger-swiped camera controls, aim-assist and other shooter essentials like weapon selection, a reloading mechanism, and grenades. The iPad’s touchscreen is used to great effect here, making N.O.V.A. HD feel arguably more at home here than on its iPhone version cousin. Visuals and production values are high, and voice acting adds depth to the experience as well.
Although the title is undoubtedly derivative of Halo, and the storyline cribs a number of sci-fi action cliches, N.O.V.A. is still loads of fun to fire up and shoot some baddies. You may even find yourself marveling that this type of experience is happening on a portable device.
Get it: N.O.V.A. HD for $6.99

3. Plants vs. Zombies HD

If you’ve ever played PopCap’s Plants vs. Zombies in any of its various versions for iPhone, Mac, PC or Web, you’ll be right at home with the iPad version. It’s essentially the same zombie-slaying action strategy goodness in larger, eye-popping resolution.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing “PvZ” yet, it’s well worth a first try in this format. The premise is to prevent your home from being invading by incessantly spawning zombies of varying abilities. You’ll need to use an arsenal of different plant types with different skills along with various obstacles to slow down and destroy the oncoming hordes over multiple levels. With four different game modes to choose from and lots of replayability factor, this creative and humorous title is one to consider picking up.
Get it: Plants vs. Zombies HD for $9.99

4. Labyrinth 2 HD

Fans of the original Labyrinth for the iPhone will enjoy this new version of the popular maze game, and even moreso thanks to the increased screen real estate on the iPad. As one of the titles making exceptional use of the accelerometer function, this reasonably-priced puzzle game emulates the original analog wooden puzzles in which you navigate a steel ball through a maze, avoiding obstacles along the way to get to the end.
With oodles of challenging levels featuring obstacles galore, there’s no shortage of fun gameplay in this app. Multiplayer mode adds a whole additional dimension to the game, and yet another really cool feature is the level editor which allows you to create your own obstacle courses, share them with your friends, and download custom maps created by other players.
Get it: Labyrinth 2 HD for $7.99

5. Real Racing HD

Firemint’s Real Racing HD is a good option for fans of racing titles, with your choice of five different control schemes that make varying use of the iPad’s accelerometer. In addition to a number of different track challenges available in several modes including career, quick race and time trial, you also get the ability to extensively personalize your vehicles with custom photos and skins.
Get it: Real Racing HD for $9.99

6. Mirror’s Edge

If you’ve played the console version of EA’s innovative and critically-acclaimed Mirror’s Edge, you’ll probably be delightfully surprised by this smaller, iPad version. In this side-scrolling rendition of the original first person action-adventure, you navigate through a stylishly-rendered dystopian cityscape as protagonist Faith.
In the iPad version, finger swipes send Faith leaping over, sliding under, or wall-running and more around obstacles in her path. Getting into a consistent groove helps Faith pick up speed to achieve ever more death-defying leaps across rooftops, off of buildings onto precarious scaffolding, across chasms to crane-held beams and more. Interspersed cut scenes keep you engaged in the storyline as well, and multiplayer modes provide the ability to race through the city against your friends.
At $12.99, it’s one of the more expensive titles in this list, but in our opinion the silky smooth acrobatics and compelling world creation are well worth the expense.
Get it: Mirror’s Edge for $12.99

7. MiniGore HD

This quirky action shoot ‘em up has you piloting a series of comical avatars through the stylishly “dark wilderness of Hardland,” fending off furry creatures and various flavors of enemy. With 14 unique playable characters and a choice between dead easy and original dual-stick shooter control options, this playful title is a perfect bit of instant fun.
Get it: MiniGore HD for $4.99

8. Geometry Wars: Touch

Activision’s popular Xbox Live Arcade twin-stick shooter Geometry Wars gets an iPad-flavored update in this app. The action is controlled by two virtual sticks, but their position is not fixed and you can determine your own comfortable position for holding your iPad and playing — simply drop your thumb in a new position to create a new stick location. One stick controls the motion of your iconic spaceship with the other controlling the direction you shoot.
You can unlock different gameplay modes by mastering earlier levels, and gameplay is enhanced with an appropriately frenetic soundtrack and sound effects.
Get it: Geometry Wars: Touch for $4.99

9. Diner Dash: Grilling Green

Diner Dash as a restaurant-themed time-management strategy game is already well known. Diner Dash: Grilling Green for iPad has been built as a completely new title for the platform. You play as Flo, a former stockbroker, who has left the life of high finance to own and operate her own diner. You’ll need to seat customers, take their orders, inform the cook and deliver the food before they get too antsy.
The iPad-specific Grilling Green edition features a healthy eating theme, in which Flo embarks on a mission to serve “DinerTown” denizens greener, healthier foods. Players of previous titles will be happy to find new tricks in Flo’s arsenal to help her move patrons through the restaurant swiftly enough to avoid being overwhelmed by incoming customers.
Get it: Diner Dash: Grilling Green for $4.99

10. Radio Flare REDUX HD

The mechanics of this game are similar to the twin-stick shooting action of Geometry Wars, but are enhanced with an additional rhythm action component. A pulsating electronica soundtrack accompanies your flying ship on its mission to destroy bad guys by stringing together attacks as your craft moves and shoots to the beat.
