Love Is In The Air - Week 3: Tiny Tots (Card 3 of 3)

A whole month to share all the love that is in the air!

During January, I will be featuring posts celebrating hugs, kisses, and Valentine wishes.

This week's focus is on tiny tots.

Be Mine

This tiny tot is one of my favorites which is called Love Sign (Penny Black / Illustrated by Mo Manning).  Did you spot the girl signing "I Love You"?  Her dress is so adorable and the balloon is the perfect size for adding a small sentiment (Ooh La La - Penny Black).

The card base and second layer were created from white cardstock. To "pop" the orange of the girl's dress, I used a complementary color for the accent strip.  A small piece of teal cardstock was stamped twice with a border from Rose Edging (Penny Black). First in Teal Zeal Memento and then again with Wedding Dress Luxe Memento.  While it can be difficult to see the darker, first impression it gives the piece a great deal of depth.

Thank you for joining me this week.  I will see you on Monday to kick off Week 4!

Studio Sessions: PITT Pastel Pencils, 2 of 4

Welcome to Day 2 of Studio Sessions featuring PITT Pastel Pencils.

Studio Sessions

The vibrant chalk pastels are available in three mix & match collections:  red/yellow, blue/green and neutrals.

Featuring PITT Pastels
Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft PITT Pastel Pencils
Additional Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Inspiration on their BLOG and FACEBOOK PAGE

PITT Pastel Pencils offer many possibilities for blending and highlighting.  By using short bending strokes, colors within small intricate areas can be intensified and delicate shadows can be achieved.  This worked extremely well for the small berries.

Thinking of You
Holly Concert (Penny Black) inked with a black Stamper's Big Brush Pen was stamped on white cardstock.  PITT Pastel Pencils (blue/green, red/yellow and neutral collections) were added to the image.

Shading Close Up
Highlighting with the gray PITT Pastel Pencil softened the design and added a subtle glow.  Blending was done with my fingertip.

Tip/Hint:  PITT Pastel Pencil markings can easily be erased which provide additional options for manipulating the color and intensity.

The Mix & Match qualities of Faber-Castell's products are fabulous for coordinating colors between different mediums.  As seen here, the red mat created by applying Stamper's Big Brush Pens in deep scarlet red and magenta to white cardstock coordinates fabulously with the pastel pencil medium.  This is also a savvy way to save on colored cardstock when just a small portion is exposed within the design.  In addition, the same Stamper's Big Brush Pens were used to alter the ribbon.

A few vertical dry embossed lines at the bottom of the card base lends a bit more "visual" weight to the design and anchors the matted artwork.

Sharpening
The pencils sharpen magnificently too.

Join me as I pop into Jill's section of the studio to see how she worked her magic today.

Studio Sessions: PITT Pastel Pencils, 1 of 4

Welcome to the first collaborative post of Studio Sessions.  I am ecstatic to be sharing a virtual studio with my friend and colorful artist, Jill Foster, in a new series of artful adventures.

Studio Sessions

During our Studio Sessions we will feature a product, technique or idea that will we both be using which will be highlighted during the collaboration.

Featuring PITT Pastels
Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft PITT Pastel Pencils

For my first studio session project with PITT Pastel Pencils, I colored this feathery friend.

Winter Perch

To begin, Winter Perch (Penny Black) was inked with Faber-Castell's Stamper's Big Brush Pen in black and stamped on white cardstock.  Tip/Hint:  Un-embossed images are typically easier to color and blend.

Close Up

PITT Pastel Pencils (blue/green, red/yellow and neutral collections) were added in layers to create definition and depth.

The fussy cut image was layered with dimensional foam on a small piece of mat board cut from Faber-Castell's Mini Mixed Media Journal.  Letter Background (Penny Black) stamped in watermark ink and heat embossed with clear powder created a resist for the application of butterscotch Gelato which was blended with a moist towel.  Edged highlights were added with a Stamper's Big Brush Pen in nougat.

Blending Stump

I implemented several blending methods when working with the PITT Pastel Pencils.  In addition to using my fingertip and a soft cotton towel, I found a blending stump to be extremely helpful in working in small, intricate areas.  Also, PITT Pastel Pencil color applied with soft "flicking" motions worked well for controlling definition.

There's more!  Now you can visit Jill to see how she used her PITT Pastel Pencils.

We will be back tomorrow with more inspiration from Studio Sessions.

Color Combo: Orange and Teal

Today I am using one of my favorite color combinations: orange and teal.

Thinking of You

For this design, you can let all the ink and cardstock do the coloring for you.

Here's how with Imagine Crafts/Tsukineko inks and Penny Black stamps....
  • Stamp the top portion of a rectangular piece of orange cardstock with Lace Trims in Habanero VersaFine.  Adhere to the front of a white card base.
  • Stamp Lace Trims on a separate rectangular piece of white cardstock with Sea Breeze VersaMagic and trim the bottom to follow the stamped pattern.
  • Attach this on top of the orange cardstock (as shown) with dimensional foam tape.
  • Stamp the sentiment in Habanero VersaFine on a shapely piece of white cardstock and distress the edges with Peanut Brittle Memento.  Sneak a small piece of knotted ribbon behind the tag before attaching it to the front of the card with dimensional foam tape.
  • Adorn with a fussy cut flower and leaf stamped from Floral Applique.  The flower is stamped in Habanero VersaFine on orange cardstock and the leaf is stamped in Olympia Green VersaFine on green cardstock.
  • Extras:  An orange brad covered with stickles for the center of the flower.  White gel pen accents for the flower petals.  Black pin dots used throughout the teal lace border.

Have a wonderful day,
Elizabeth

"You've Been Spotted"

spotted blog graphic

All this week Penny Black is featuring artists who have been spotted using their stamps and they asked the designers to play along.

So I jumped into my cyber car and took a cruise through the internet blog galaxy.  There are so many wonderful artists out there that it was hard to choose.

My first eye-spy artist was Yenni.  She adds all kinds of cute to the Penny Black critters.

Yenni
To read more about Yenni's card at Scrapcollector click "here".

Then I saw this dimensional piece by Doreen that perfectly frames some of Penny Black's pretty florals.

Doreen (1)

To commemorate being "spotted", Penny Black has given the designers blinkies to the share with the featured artists.  I can't wait to cruise by and make the delivery.

Be sure to visit the Penny Black Blog "here" every day this week to see other inspiring eye-spy features.

You never know, you may have been spotted making Penny Black stamps shine!

Enjoy,
Elizabeth

ATC: Infusing Doodling into Mixed Media

Today I am infusing a little bit of my own doodling into my mixed media.

Art Dreams
ATC:  Finished size 2 1/5 x 3 1/5
This ATC was so much fun to make.  I think the best part of a mixed media adventure is watching what unfolds during the process.  This little piece started out with a heart that I doodled on a separate piece of cardstock and, as they say, the rest is history.

DSC04547
Sakura's black Micron pens are fabulous for penning art.  They did not bleed or smear when Dr. Ph. Martin's Hydrus watercolors were added.  Prismacolor pencils were used for added shading.

Tip/Hint:  Use portions of rubber stamps for artsy text.  Segments from Penny Black's Edge to Edge were used to create this message.

DSC04549
Also infused into this ATC are Penny Black's Tree-mendous (bird) and Flowers & Wishes (postcard).

Tip/Hint:  Stamping on tissue paper allows images to be melded into a design without bulk and gives the added advantage of working in some "ripply" texture if desired.  This process was used for the postcard image.

DSC04548

Tip/Hint:  Don't forget the micro glitter!!  When working with varnishes and matte mediums, sprinkle in a little glitter for a touch of sparkle.

Since I was using watercolors in various stages, I also incorporated matte medium gel and gloss varnish to seal the colors.

I also like using mat board for a base.  It is very sturdy and helps the piece from tending to bend and curl.

Dream in art.....

Home Sweet Home Address Book

A tiny little address book to give to a friend, tuck in a purse or keep on your desk.

Mini Address Book

Spellbinders Labels Twenty-Two die cuts were altered for the booklet.  The front and back flaps were covered with Madison Paper and edged with Orange PanPastel and a Tangelo Memento Marker.

Elements from Penny Black's Sweet Home were stamped, colored with Copics and fussy cut to create the dimensional scene.

DSC04538

The inside pages were highlighted with a Sofft Art Sponge and Diarylide Yellow PanPastel.  No need to computer generate each page with "info lines" as this cute stamp is from Penny Black's Address Book set.

DSC04539DSC04540

For fast color blocking, I created a masking template.  A window was cut into a plain piece of cardstock with a craft knife.  Alignment marks were used on the back for consistent placement on each page when chalking.  Blue painter's tape kept each piece secure during the process.

Turning Wallpaper Into Leather

Having fun with textured wallpaper!

 Turning Wallpaper Into Leather
This creative experience revealed that wallpaper could take on the appearance and feel of LEATHER!

DSC04413
This note pad holder measures 4 x 4 1/2.

The repetitive pattern of the wallpaper allowed two consecutive designs to be trimmed as one segment to create the holder.  Recycled cardboard is used between the wallpaper and antiqued tissue paper to create stability.

DSC04415
To begin, a diluted wash of yellow ochre acrylic paint was applied to the white wallpaper.  Then layers of different colored metallic rub-ons were added.  To pronounce the raised design in certain spots, Virdi acrylic paint was dabbed on.  The final application was a coat of Shimmer Creative Medium.

The shank was removed from an antique button to create the center embellishment.

DSC04417
The exposed cardboard on the inside was coated with clear Gesso and then Tim Holtz's printed tissue paper was attached with Gel Medium.  Vintage Creative Medium was used to instantly antique the paper.  A Cobalt Green PITT Artist Pen was perfect for adding/blending teal highlights around the edges.

DSC04424
A custom note pad was made from copy paper.  After cutting the paper to size, each piece was stamped with a border from Lace Delight in Niagara Mist VersaMagic.  Clamping the papers together and adding glue to the top edge secured the pad.

DSC04421
Tombow's Fastener Tabs were used on the back of the pad and base of the holder so the note pad could be replaced as needed.

Thank you for visiting!

Fairy Wishes

Framing is a quick technique which adds great dimension to any card design and is oh-so-easy (and fun) to do.

Fairy Wishes
Penny Black’s Fairy Sweet (illustrated by Mo Manning) was stamped in Onyx Black VersaFine on watercolor paper and heat embossed with clear powder.  The image was watercolored with Tombow Dual Brush Pens.  Tip/Hint: For extra glowing enchantment, the wings and dress also had a layer of USArtQuest Interference Gold Pigmented Mica Watercolor paint added to them.

DSC04378a
The white cardstock frame was die cut using Spellbinders Classic Squares.  The frame and die were run through the die cutting machine a second time with a rubber mat to create the embossed ridge.  Before layering, a Delicata Golden Glitz ink pad was run along the outside edges of the frame.

DSC04382
An additional flower was stamped, trimmed and adhered to overlap the frame for a colorful embellishment.

DSC04386
These darling images can be used for so many occasions.  Tuck a few aside and, when needed, personalize the inside of the card.  For this design, the sentiment from Friendship was stamped in Pink Grapefruit VersaMagic on a banner edged in Delicata Golden Glitz ink.

Have a magical day,
Elizabeth

Road Trip

I am thrilled to announce that during the next several weeks I will be sprinkling in posts of projects that I created as a 2012 AIR designer for Imagine Crafts/Tsukineko.  It was an exciting adventure working with them, their talented group of co-artists and their amazing and colorful products!

Today's project is a notebook designed to be a small journal to capture memories.

Road Trip

Inside there are lots of pages to affix photos/memorabilia or to write notes.

DSC03124

If you are interested in assembling one of your own or would like to see how a certain segment was made, the detailed instructions along with a supply list have been provided below for your reference.

Instructions

Cut a 3 ½ x 8 7/8 inch piece of pink cardstock and score two vertical lines along the horizontal edge at 4 3/8 and 4 ½.  Fold on the creases to create a 3 ½ x 4 3/8 card with a 1/8-inch top fold.

Stamp San Francisco on the top half with Toffee Crunch Memento.  Using jumbo sponge daubers, highlight the edges with Peanut Brittle and Vintage Sepia VersaFine inks.

Cut a 2 ¼ x 3 ½ inch piece of orange cardstock and stamp with New York in Toffee Crunch Memento.  Using sponge daubers, highlight the edges with Peanut Brittle and Vintage Sepia VersaFine inks.  Attach to bottom half of the prepared base with dimensional foam.

Add small dots around the perimeter of the design with a Tuxedo Black Memento marker.

Letters:
Stamp the letters (Robust Lowercase) on white cardstock with Toffee VersaFine.  Add subtle highlights with a sponge dauber and Love Letter Memento.

Stamp San Francisco and New York over the letters in Tuxedo Black Memento.  Trim the letters and pounce with Vintage Sepia VersaFine.  Sprinkle each letter with embossing powder, tap off excess and heat set.

Adhere the letters to the front of the notepad with dimensional foam.

Car Embellishment:

Stamp the car (Hello Gorgeous) with Onyx Black VersaFine on white cardstock and heat emboss with clear powder.  Trim the image and color the windshield, driver and wheels with Memento markers.  Set aside.

Apply Turquoise Gem VersaMagic to white cardstock with a jumbo sponge dauber.  Stamp the car over the ink with Onyx Black VersaFine and heat emboss with clear powder.  Trim the body of the car eliminating the windshield, driver and wheels.

With dimensional foam, elevate the trimmed inked design over the full image.  Attach the dimensional element to the front of the notepad with additional dimensional foam.

Notepad:

For a sturdy base for the notepaper, cut a 3 ¼ x 4 ¼ inch piece of cardboard and using the fastener as a template, lightly trace the holes with a pencil.  Create the holes with a hole punch.

Cut 24 pieces of copy paper to measure 3 ¼ x 4 ¼.  Using the cardboard base created in the previous step as a template, mark the hole placement with a pencil on the copy paper rectangles and punch the holes.

Thread the cardboard base onto the prong fastener, then the notepaper and finish with the top portion of the fastener.  Secure the fastener arms.

Apply heavy-duty, double-sided adhesive tape to the back of the notepad and adhere inside the cover.

Thank you for "zooming" by today in your cyber car and sharing a bit of your day with me!

Transforming Backgrounds into Gifts

Large background stamps make great gifts!

Happy Birthday

Taking a small portion of a larger background can instantly create a decorative miniature.

DSC03945

DSC03944

Clean and simple in 5 quick steps:
  1. Trim a white Les Petites card to measure 3 ¼ x 3 3/8 and dry emboss a border ¼” from the sides around the perimeter.  Set aside.
  2. Cut a 1 ¼ x 2 ¼-inch piece of white cardstock and edge with Delicata Golden Glitz ink.  Stamp "happy birthday" in Onyx Black VersaFine and heat emboss with clear powder.
  3. Cut a 1 3/8 x 1 5/8-inch piece of white cardstock and stamp Allover Pattern across the front in Teal Zeal Memento ink.  Softly distress the sides with the same color ink and then paint with a light layer of Interference Blue Watercolor.
  4. Tie a sheer ribbon around the gift and add a tag stamped with "wishes" in Teal Zeal Memento.  Add a tiny gem to accent.
  5. Attach the gift with dimensional foam tape to the sentiment panel then attach the entire piece to the front of the prepared card with dimensional foam tape.

Sweet Wishes (Positively Negative)

I don’t mean to be negative today, but it is just too much fun!

Sweet Wishes

A small circle cut into the elevated panel creates a positively perfect negative space to stamp this sentiment from Penny Black's Friendship collection.

Side View

The colorful panel started with a piece of white cardstock that was distressed with Dandelion, Cantaloupe and Morocco Memento inks.  Penny Black's Dots in Space was then inked starting at the top with Dandelion Memento ink and then gradually transitioned into Cantaloupe Memento ink.  Tip/Hint:  This inking process provides a soft transition of color in the final stamped image.

Penny Black's Scintilla was stamped on a separate piece of white cardstock in Onyx Black VersaFine and heat embossed with clear powder.  After coloring with Copics, the piece was trimmed and attached to the card with dimensional foam tape.

Enjoy putting some "negative" creativity into your designs,

Elizabeth
