Dawning of a New Era: Live Ska Music (Slowly) Returns to NYC!

The sticker features a rude boy with his back to us pointing a pistol to his right.
It's been a very long time since I last posted a NYC Ska Calendar, so it's kind of a thrill to list these few upcoming ska shows, even though we're several months out from all of them (well, with the exception of the Madness date which is a year out).

First up, The Toasters are playing in Brooklyn on the way to the Supernova Ska Festival in Hampton, VA (and rumor has it that Bim Skala Bim will be making a rare New York appearance around the same time).

Duff Guide to Ska Fast Takes: The New Normal Collaboration "Quarantined on Easy Street"

The cover illustration features a man sitting under a palm tree on a desert island. A sign in the sand states that people should keep 6 feet apart, and a message in a bottle floats in the water near the shore. In the distance, a city is visible across the water.

Self-released
LP/digital
2020

(Review by Steve Shafer)

Editor's note: In reaction to substantiated allegations of sexual harassment against Allen Teboul by someone involved in The New Normal Collective, John Roy has split with Teboul and withdrawn this project from Bandcamp (and anyone who had pre-ordered the LP has been refunded). Roy has renamed this collective the Smoke & Mirrors Soundsystem, is in the process of re-recording all of the drum tracks that Teboul performed on, as well as remixing the album, and is recording additional songs with the other musicians involved in this project.

As we face the prospect of a particularly bleak and deadly plague winter season--especially here in the USA--I don't need to remind you how the global covid-19 pandemic has affected everyone in myriad ways, forcing us to adapt our lives and livelihoods (if you still have one) as best we can until science can save us. Musicians, of course, have been hit very hard by the necessary public health restrictions; fortunately they've had some means of staying sane and keeping the creative juices flowing, thanks to current technology. Bi-coastal friends John Roy (Unsteady) and Allen Teboul (Clockwork Trio, The Slackers, The Allentons, Chris Murray) decided to use their covid time on a long-distance musical project that evolved into an album's worth of tracks involving almost three dozen top ska musicians working remotely from all over the US, as well as the UK and Brazil. The stellar result is The New Normal Collaboration's Quarantined on Easy Street, a ska/rocksteady/reggae concept record about life under covid-19 lockdown, and all of the critical, existential issues dogging the USA that have come into much sharper focus--and been exacerbated/exploited by Trump--during this time.

Quarantined on Easy Street is almost evenly split between vocal tracks and superb instrumentals (like the jazzy, heroic-sounding "Hazard Pay" and "Barrio Bridge"--the latter a Facebook page for people living in several Hispanic neighborhoods in San Diego and a resource/means of connection during the pandemic), the majority of which were written by Roy (with several of the vocalists contributing lyrics). King Django starts the record off with the phenomenal "Learn or Burn," which posits that we're not going to be able to fix all that ails our broken society until we find a way to truly care about each other--and that can only be achieved through "Love, my brothers and sisters, it's so simple/Learn to love one another...and teach love." After a wicked melodica solo, Django sums up the last year in America under the chaos president:

"Some selling hate
And enough people buy it
Better feed each other with love
As a steady diet

Everywhere is disquiet
Some start a riot
While some decry it
Some just want peace and quiet

Some of them pimp out the nation
And promote separation
Some spread disinformation
While some take dictation

Some of them deal with predation
And they cause starvation
Some of them push conflagration
While they sip their libation

Some of them run plantation
And then they beg for donation
Then they take vacation
And they talk reparation

Through some a dem rich, but dem gwan like a witch"

"Nobody Did It" is about how many on the right have adopted the stance that they're not responsible for any of their actions/choices--anything that doesn't pan out in their favor/comport to their version of reality is a result of them being victimized by the weirdly powerful left (Roy sings, "There's always a hand to help you/But still you always refuse/You can't always play the victim/You won't be excused"). A fantastic duet of sorts between Mark QMaxx Lyn (Slackers) and Dunia Best (Dubistry), "Great Divide" is an anti-racist plea for unity (Lyn toasts, "You’re on one side and I am the other/I’m not your enemy, I’m just your brother"). "Mile in Their Shoes" decries the shocking lack of empathy that's evidently rampant in large swathes of the country in reaction to the massive Black Lives Matter protests over the past summer ("Do you think others deserve all of this suffering?/You close your eyes and pretend it's not happening/You've been blinded by your hypocrisy/'Why are there protests?' It's a big mystery/You don't want to hear just where they're coming from/Them--are the people taking your freedom"). "Connected" celebrates the shared human experiences that have the great power to bond and heal us--exactly what we all need in isolating times like these ("You could be near me or a thousand miles away/It doesn't matter where or when/With every note we sing and every note we play/Music makes us whole again").

The album finishes with "Reasoning," which expresses the hope that truth will eventually triumph over falsehoods and propaganda ("Full of hate with no reason/There's no light in their eyes/And their hearts have been hardened/By a network of lies/Let your voice be your weapon/Let your shield be your words/Let there be no confusion/Let the people be heard"), and that there will be a reckoning for those who chose to weaponize the pandemic for their own political ends, and not do all they could to protect us and save lives ("Will there ever be justice/for the thousands of dead?"). I'm all on board with these sentiments, but with the stark reality that over 70 million Americans voted for four more years of lies, conspiracy theories, white supremacy, self-dealing, corruption, incompetence, and lawlessness, it's going to be a long, hard slog back toward anything remotely resembling a civil society striving for "a more perfect Union." Quarantined on Easy Street is one of the albums to play to keep your spirits up until we all get there.

Duff Guide to Ska Bullet Points: Top Shotta Band Featuring Screechy Dan, and The Return of Flying Vipers

The cover illustration features a Black couple riding a motorcycle with a cloud of smoke behind them.(Reviews by Steve Shafer)
  •  A mainstay of the Brooklyn ska and reggae scene, Top Shotta Band (led by ex-Slacker/Murphy's law trumpet man Mush1, and including Slacker Vic Ruggiero and The Far East's Maddie Ruthless) featuring Screechy Dan (Megative, Leon Dinero, Vital Crew, Big Yard, Shaggy Posse) have released their incredible second album Spread Love (LP, Liquidator Music, 2020), which is available in the US directly from the band (direct message them through their FB page) or through one of my fave BK shops, Record City. Striving for--and achieving--a vintage, live ska studio sound like those created by Coxsone Dodd, Prince Buster, and Justin Yap (all of whom worked with The Skatalites--they're the act Top Shotta Band channel and honor exceedingly well on this LP), Spread Love is--shocker!--filled with songs about romantic love, and love and respect for your fellow human beings and yourself. "Share My Love" (Screechy Dan's pitch for why he should be her man) and the awesome "Cool and Deadly" ("I'm a champion/I'm nobody you can stomp on/But you can keep your eyes on/A conqueror, that's what I am!") already have been spun off on a Liquidator 45. But there are loads of additional top-shelf tracks, including the encouraging wisdom shared in "No Complaints" ("So, live the life you love/And love the life you live/Don't worry about what could have been/Be thankful for what is"), the head over heels profession of love and devotion in "Coming Over," the rhythmically unusual "Johnny," the cool out son cut "Easy Yourself" ("The more you think you tough/The more you gonna suffer"), the killer dance floor filler "Ska Ska," and the wonderful duet in the anti-bad boy cut "Rude Boy" ("Boys and girls, this is my story/Make sure you have all of Jah glory/And no, don't you be a rude boy, I tell ya"). If traditional ska is your thing, this album is a must.
The cover illustration features a volcano erupting, while in the foreground snakes slither through a jungle littered with skulls and bones.
  • Since Flying Vipers' incredible debut full-length record Cuttings is soon being released on plum-colored vinyl by Jump Up Records, it's worth revisiting my review of the digital version of this album from back in July:
"After releasing a series of superb cassettes (The Green TapeThe Copper Tape), and physical and digital singles ("Highest Region," "Nervous Breakdub (Pandemic Version)" b/w "PMA Calling") over the past few years, Flying Vipers have finally issued their first long-player Cuttings, which, as one would expect, is crammed with incredibly hooky, dubby roots reggae instrumentals reminiscent of Dennis Bovell's magnificent productions and Perry's recent and awesome collaborations with Adrian Sherwood and Daniel Boyle
Cuttings, of course, refers not only to the leaves that have been harvested from cannabis plants, but these musical fruits of the band's labors in the studio--and they have one bounteous crop here. Highlights include "Leaf Miner," which has a wonderful interplay between a rigid and relentless bass riff and a series of answering free flowing Rhodes piano lines; the prescient, apocalyptic "Two Twenties Clash" (and people thought things were bad back in '77!); the Bunny "Striker" Lee tribute "Flight of the Gorgon" with its majestic, panoramic horns; the bad-ass "Scorpio Son" and its version "Son of Scorpio"; and the supremely confident and untouchable "Puff Adder" (many of the cuts on this album are ripe for being versioned by deejays and singers--and becoming well-known riddims in their own right).
Flying Vipers are comprised of the devastatingly good rhythm section of Marc and John Beaudette (Destroy BabylonThe Macrotones), the gifted Zack Brines (Pressure Cooker) on keys, and Jay Champany (10 Ft. Ganja Plant) on percussion and the master at the analogue controls (plus ace guests on horns, sax, flute, clarinet, and binghi).
If you haven't been paying attention to this band, Cuttings is a brilliant introduction to the mighty Flying Vipers; and if you have, you're going to love this album!"
