A Video PLEA to HELP my Friends in Nicaragua

The gay owners of Joluva Hotel in Granada Nicaragua were found guilty of sex related crimes and sentenced to 5 years in a Nicaraguan prison. They're appealing.

Yup, unfortunately our friends, Jan and Francis, who entered the court case cautiously optimistic knowing they did nothing wrong, totally underestimated the corruption that IS Nicaragua. If you want to know the full story and why they are innocent, go to my post; My Friends in Granada Nicaragua Sexually Exploiting Boys?

Anyway, I decided to make this video for the sole purpose of getting their story out. This past September, getting the story out helped in the release of an American,Jason Puracal, who spent 2 years in a Nicaraguan jail, after being falsely accused of drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime activity.

After a two-year legal nightmare that landed 35-year-old Jason Puracal, a U.S. citizen, in a Nicaraguan prison on what he says were baseless charges of drug trafficking and money laundering, a Nicaraguan appellate court found procedural flaws in a criminal trial that could have landed him in prison for 22 years, and ordered his release. - Tico Times.

If you want to help, please post this video everywhere you can, Facebook, Twitter, blogs etc. And if you'd like to DONATE to the cause, visit Friends of Joluva. I'd appreciate it and I know Jan & Francis would.

my new blog Travel GAY Costa Rica NOW

I'm talkin' Gay Gay Costa Rica- every INCH of it.

Dear Everyone,

That's the description of my NEW 'gay' blog- Travel GAY Costa Rica NOW.

So, to all gay, gay friendly, friends of gay, or really, ANYONE interested in knowing about traveling and living in GAY Costa Rica, I have the blog for you.

After 2 failed attempts of having a gay Costa Rica blog, I'm finally back to my comfort zone, which is 'BLOGGER'. My first attempt at 'Blogger' was actually very successful until I made the mistake of posting 'Adult Content', got flagged and GOOGLE stopped crawling it, relegating my blog into internet, search engine, oblivion. My second attempt was 'Wordpress'... I hated it and quit posting about a year ago.

I'm back, so GAY Costa Rica will finally have a place to PLAY.

thanx.

How GAY is Manuel Antonio?

I'm just not that gay I guess, kinda like Manuel Antonio on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. I'm mean we're BOTH gay, but maybe just a little too straight-acting when it comes right down to it... whatever.

First off, I want to say, I haven't posted on my other 'gay' blog, 'Doin' Gay Costa Rica', in over a year. Why? Because there just isn't that much 'gay' in Costa Rica that I care to write about and all the gay INFO I did want to write about, I have. Now I'm over it. That blog can go to gay hell for all I care. Point is, when gay does come up, I'll post on this blog... but don't worry my straight friends, I can assure you it won't come up often, so please find it in your hearts to let me slide from time to time. But today is a gay thing....

D'Angelo and I chillin' at Gaia Hotel and Reserve in Manuel Antonio.

Back to Manuel Antonio. Manuel Antonio has been considered one of the most gay-friendly destinations in all of Latin America. And I guess, it's kinda true, or at least, was true. But like I mentioned earlier, like me, Manuel Antonio is not that gay.

Here's our NEW Video about 'How Gay Manuel Antonio' really is. ENjoY!

Coyaba Tropical in Manuel Antonio UPDATE!

Coyaba Tropical in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica has a COOL New Addition.

Our friends, Mike and Paul, the owners of Coyaba Tropical, a VERY straight-friendly, B&B, located in beautiful Manuel Antonio, have added a brand NEW pool and jacuzzi area.

We love Coyaba Tropical. In the gay, internet travel world, it's known as a gay-owned, B&B, but really, it's a VERY straight-friendly destination and probably has just as many COOL straight people staying there as gay.... probably because COOL straight people know gay places are the places to GO *wink-wink* But the major draw just may be Mike and Paul because they're the consummate hosts- it's like staying with family.

Well, now Coyaba is that much better with a pool and jacuzzi area. Check it out. The first video is one we did a few months ago, the second is a quick look at the new pool and jacuzzi area. GREAT JOB on the pool area guys. Can't wait to test it out.

My Friends in Granada Nicaragua Sexually EXPLOITING Boys?

'Joluva Hotel in Granada where underage Nicaraguan boys are enslaved waiting to be sodomized by pedophiles from around the WORLD.

Sorry, but you got the wrong hotel.

Granada Nicaragua's, Hotel Joluva, a gay, straight-friendly guesthouse, has been shut down after police arrested the owners and investigate allegations of sexual exploitation and pornography.
"All five men are being held under preventive prison sentences while they await trial on charges of promoting tourism for the purpose of sexual exploitation, pornography and sexual abuse, according to Granada Police Chief Horacio Sobalvarro."
I call total BULLSHIT.

First off, the owners of Joluva Hotel, Jan and Francis, who are from Belgium, are our friends and although it's true you never REALLY know someone 100%, we know and have experienced Joluva enough to know these allegations are BULLSHIT. And since they're getting a bum rap here on the internet, I feel inclined to respond. Especially after this Nicaragua website uses our Joluva video and mentions our names in attempt to kinda, sorta prove something salacious was going on at Joluva Hotel. *I'll try to refrain from blasting this particular article even though they could have easily contacted us if they REALLY wanted insight and info on Joluva, versus making assumptions, inferences and spreading innuendo. Totally NOT cool when people's lives are at stake. But anyway, fuck them. I'll get back to them later.

Here's our VIDEO on Joluva that supposedly offers proof that illegal activity was taking place. We totally apologize for this video because truth is, it is NOT a good video. At the time, we were still learning about editing. Joluva deserves a better video which we would be happy to do in the future.

BE WARNED- this video contains a butt crack and some guys in their underwear.

Joluva is a gay hotel which obviously caters to the gay traveler BUT it is also straight friendly, which is telling. I'll explain shortly. They're all over the internet, Trip Advisor... and for good reason, they're a legitimate gay destination, not some 'no-name, secret room down the alley with little boys for sale' kinda place. If they were exploiting boys or promoting underage sex etc, it would have been quickly known and shut down years ago. You think they would let 'straight people' in Joluva if they were doing illegal 'gay' activity, I think not. Promoting gay sex? Where are the fliers? Is there a price list? The straight world uses Tits and Ass to promote everything from cars to pencils, so please, a hot guy in his underwear just isn't enough. And a note to Jan & Francis, if you're going to exploit young men, you should do it by the hour, it's much more lucrative than actually having folks book a few nights. Joluva is NOT a bordello, just so we're crystal CLEAR.

The 'boringness' of this pic is pretty much the point.

You can't even ENTER Joluva without a key or someone letting you in so people just don't come and go. Jan and Francis were well aware who entered their hotel and since there's only 4 rooms, it's not as if it isn't manageable. They also have cameras, not sure why they would have cameras installed if their was so much illegal activity going on. But Jan and Francis weren't stupid, they knew they would have clientele from time to time who WERE of the 'sketchy' type, which is precisely the reason they had cameras installed and furthermore, wouldn't let any Nicaraguan 'boy' in Joluva who couldn't prove they were of legal age. I witnessed this a few times and it also happened to me and D'Angelo when we befriended a guy in Granada and invited him to our room for pizza. At the time, Jan knew us very well, but the guy still had to produce his 'drivers license' in order to come in. But I imagine your first thought would be we invited the guy in for 'other' reasons... because you know us gay guys, sex, sex, sex... but then again, like your first assumptions of Joluva, you'd be wrong.

Assume what you want, this guy was in our video and at the time of shooting was 24 years old. He's a dentist now.

The other problem having a gay hotel in a 3rd world country is the fact, boys, and I mean boys in every since of the word, WILL engage in gay for pay, if given the opportunity. The 'whys' and moral obligations of a society will not be discussed in this post but it is a fact- many Nicaraguan boys would like nothing better than to connect with a foreigner in order to receive money, gifts, attention, school tuition etc...but I digress. Again, this is the reason for the locked entrance, cameras, night security and proof of age requirement. These measures are standard in most legitimate hotels in Granada as well as in Costa Rica. *Some will make you pay an additional charge if you have a guest in your room.

Can a consenting adult in almost ANYTOWN or CITY around the world make a connection with another consenting adult, in let's say, the bar at the Airport Holiday Inn and return to first consenting adult's room? What is the responsibility of the Holiday Inn? Jan and Francis do everything in their power to ensure it's a consenting adult entering 'that' room. Probably a lot more than the Holiday Inn does.

Cute guys give legitimate massages at the Joluva. And? So? If you like a steroided, German lady with big hands giving you a massage, that's your prerogative... I'll take the cute guy. What you do or don't do with BIG hands, German lady is none of my concern... are we adults or are we not?

Joluva also has a private pool on another property they own. Every Wednesday and Sunday they take whoever wants to go, along with a bunch of Nicaraguan guys (all of legal age), to the pool and have a party.

Nothing like a gay KISS to throw gay in the face of the straight world.

I've been numerous times. It's fun. I've swam naked there before and have seen the 'private parts' and asses of a couple of the Nicaraguan guys there as well. I won't apologize as I have no guilt or shame about who I am. Think what you want. I've been to the pool at Joluva numerous times, I've never seen sex in or around the pool. But like I said, seen plenty of frolicking, horseplay and nude swimming- SCANDALOUS. That said, I'm not sure if sex in a pool with consenting adults is illegal or not in Nicaragua, but personally, I'm not opposed to the idea.

They're attempting to portray Jan and Francis as 'Chester the Molester' types and it's not difficult to do when you use words like, 'child sex, exploitation of minors, moral values, child abuse, pedophilia, manipulation, pornography etc.' It's not hard to make assumptions and draw misguided conclusions when you don't personally know the people involved.

Here's the BIG evidence one site reports they have on Jan and Francis:
Police, however, say they have witness testimony from five Nicaraguan boys, ages 14-17, who claim they were exploited. No one is claiming rape, but the alleged victims are claiming they were tricked, sexually exploited and had their “moral integrity affected,” the police chief said.
Total BULLSHIT..not to say, WAY general- WTF is 'moral integrity affected'? Probably some kids who wanted to sell themselves for easy money and Jan and Francis told them to get lost. And please, if they're sexually exploiting children, they're sexually exploiting children...shouldn't be hard to find plenty of these supposed, 'sexually exploited and abused' kids. Five boys, seriously?

This my friends has almost everything to do with GAY and 2 Belgium guys doing well in Nicaragua. Nicaragua does NOT like gay and you need to know that and these accusations are shaky at best. Unfortunately, Nicaragua will probably NOT play by the rules and that scares me for my friends. The media coverage is already against them.

The sad and a little ironic part of this story is how much Jan and Francis give back to the community of Granada: Shoes, school supplies, dental work, clothes, money, food, employment, the list is long and I've witnessed their good works on many of occasions. EVERYDAY, a steady stream of folks come to the gate of Joluva asking for 'something'. I've often told Jan I think he gets taken advantage of, he just smiles,,, then hands the girl a few bucks so she can buy a little food. But you don't want to hear about that do you?

Like I said, you never know someone 100%...but I've seen and experienced enough to make an educated judgment, and I'm here to say, underage ANYTHING does NOT happen at Joluva... but if there's proof of it...I'll cut their balls off myself.

PS. I'm not through with you 'Nicaragua Dispatch'. Your story SUCKED so I'll be answering to your bullshit soon and if you EVER want to debate this issue in an open forum, by all means, BRING IT.

PSS. If you've never been to Nicaragua,,you might be better off if you leave your comments to yourself.

Gay but Str8 Friendly Coyaba Tropical in Manuel Antonio

Coyaba Tropical is a small, GAY but very straight-friendly, B&B located in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica.

Gay owned and operated, Coyaba Tropical is a GREAT gay option if you want a little more privacy combined with a family type of atmosphere. And I'm not necessarily saying, 'family' in a gay way (although that's true as well) but family because the owners, Mike and Paul treat everyone LIKE family. Really, they're one of the MAJOR draws for staying at Coyaba Tropical. Warm and friendly, always ready to lend an ear or share a story OR just assist with your travel plans, one can't help but FEEL the warm VIBE at Coyaba.

One of the bedrooms at Coyaba Tropical in Manuel Antonio.

But that's not to say the Coyaba Tropical is average, far from it. Decorated with attention to detail, cool art and comfy beds that's reason enough to give the place a look see.

Anyway, CHECK OUT our video of Coyaba Tropical in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica and see for yourself.

Our Sex and Prostitution Video gets a WARNING!

Our VIDEO about sex and prostitution in Costa Rica got a *WARNING* from the folks at YouTube and it dropped out of the 'searches' because of it. Not that it deserved a 'warning' mind you, since it's purely informative and not even close to being x-rated or provocative (and don't even get me started about other videos found on Youtube with thousands of views that have been posted for years and are totally inappropriate which of course have no such 'warning') but we're pretty sure we have a jealous ex-business partner trying to make things difficult for us... but I digress.

In case you missed it, here's a re-post and video about Sex and Prostitution in Costa Rica:

'San Jose, Costa Rica where SEX and Prostitution particularly flourish.'

In Costa Rica, sex with girls, sex with gay boys, sex with trannies, even 'gay for pay' is VERY much LEGAL, and BELIEVE ME, the SEX trade industry in Costa Rica is as diverse as the country itself.

'Straight or GAY sex is easy to find in Costa Rica.'

Legal age of consent for BOTH straight sex and gay sex is 18. I would CAUTION you to be very careful, there's TONS of misinformation on the internet pertaining to the legal age of consent here, many sites will tell you it's as low as 15. We'll get back to 'age' later.

To most, Costa Rica is about active volcanoes, beautiful beaches, lush rain forest, abundant wildlife, raging rapids and an adventure LOVERS paradise... and it is. But many who come here could care less about seeing a sloth or rappelling down a waterfall, for them, Costa Rica means SEX.... and lets be truthful, Costa Rica does sell SEX just as well as it does a zipline tour.

Okay, so what, prostitution is legal in Costa Rica. Well, just because it's LEGAL doesn't mean it's not rife with problems. THINK about any issue you could have with illegal prostitution in the STATES or anywhere else prostitution is NOT legal and I can assure you, those problems EXIST here as well- with the exception of actually propositioning for sex.

Make NO mistake, drugs, crime, petty theft, STD's, AIDS, underage SEX, illegal prostitutes and sex slavery are ALL problems here. Of course these issues usually EXIST in varying degrees where ever prostitution is found- legal or NOT.

For years, Costa Rica had the dubious distinction of being one of the top destinations for partaking in underage SEX. Although they've taken steps to combat this problem, at least on the surface, it is STILL a concern here. If you get caught participating in sex with a minor, you're pretty much rightfully FUCKED... and rest assured, not in a GOOD way. But unfortunately, like most laws in Costa Rica the 'bark' is often worse than the 'bite' and enforcement is a problem, so how often some 'Chester the Molester' type is arrested and convicted for having sex with a minor is anyone's guess. Mine, is NOT very many... just sayin.

The other problem, most of the prostitutes (at least the girls) aren't even Tica's- most are Dominicans, Colombians, Nicaraguans and even Eastern Europeans. My question to you... how many of these illegal girls are actually going to register as a prostitute and keep their health card updated?

REMEMBER, just because prostitution is legal in Costa Rica- you're still responsible and PLAYING at your own RISK. Condoms are a GIVEN and speaking to your Doctor about Hepatitis is highly recommended.

So, you want to come to Costa Rica for SEX, but not sure where to find EXACTLY what you're LOOKING for. Let's pretend you don't know how to write in the GOOGLE search bar combinations of the following words, depending: 'Costa Rica, San Jose, sex, adult entertainment, escorts, prostitution, gay, girls, brothels, big tits,....whatever' or you don't know Craigslist is valuable resource if you're looking for sex, ANYWHERE. Fine, all you need to know is get in any taxi and BELIEVE ME, they'll take you wherever it IS you want to GO, you might consider beginning with the Del Rey Hotel and Casino.

Here's our VIDEO about SEX and Prostitution in Costa Rica:

Gay Travel in a Straight Costa Rica

Traveling GAY in Costa Rica is different than living GAY in Costa Rica.

It's TRUE, traveling gay in Costa Rica IS different from living gay in Costa Rica.

Normally, I don't post gay stuff on this blog, (since I have a gay blog dedicated to GAY Costa Rica) but every now and then I think something gay may be relevant, helpful or educational, so I do. If you're not in the mood, I totally understand. But I'll keep it short... or you could just scroll down and check out the video.

I guess I just want the 'straight' crowd to realize how easy they have it when traveling abroad. You don't usually have to consider what might happen if you hold hands in public or god forbid, kiss... We do. It sucks. We have to research a country's attitude towards gay before traveling there and adjust accordingly. Can you imagine being on your honeymoon and not being able or comfortable to express your affection in public? Really, it sucks.

So, if you have a gay friend, gay family member or are just curious how gay-friendly Costa Rica actually is, I think you just might find this video helpful. And by all means, share it with anyone gay thinking about traveling to Costa Rica. Thanx for indulging me.

GAY needs HELP! Sorry

Doin GAY Costa Rica is BACK with more INFO on gay hotels, gay clubs and living the gay life in Costa Rica.

Doin GAY Costa Rica is BACK, even more gay than before, offering a little (gay) perspective on anything and everything GAY in Costa Rica.

*To the Readers of Doin Costa Rica:
My apologies for this 'gay' intrusion. I really do try to keep most things gay out of Doin' Costa Rica. The story below which I posted on my gay blog a couple days ago pretty much explains it all. Fact is, I need people to be able to find 'gay' INFO on Costa Rica ie. my blog, so I'm using this post to help gay folks FIND my other blog. If you understand the internet and GOOGLE, you understand. If not, sorry, but I had to do this.

Here's what I posted a couple days ago on Doin Gay Costa Rica:

GUYS I'm so sorry. I've been gone for WAY too long. Here's what happened. GOOGLE search engines no longer 'crawled' my 'Blogger' blog because it contained 'adult content'. I wasn't aware of that when I started posting dicks and what not. *Not sure why dicks and sex are considered so dirty but that's another post altogether. I was devastated. I was doing pretty good in the rankings........ and just like that, vanished into internet oblivion.

But the bigger problem is I'm a moron when it comes to computer technology and to switch a 'Blogger' format to a 'Wordpress' format wasn't even in my realm of things I'm capable of. D'Angelo did it for me. But then he had to teach me to go in and fix all the pics because they were obviously not aligned correctly due to the change. *Most of the pics still look like shit because of pixels etc. but at least the posts look decent. I had over a hundred posts to go through. I was just SO frustrated. I'm the kind of guy once I learn something I'm pretty good, it's the learning process that kicks my ass. Like now, this being my first post and all, this may take me awhile to get everything right on the page, keywords, pics, categories etc. For most, this is probably a walk in the park, for me it's like I weigh 700lbs and I gotta start hitting the gym- that first step is a bitch.

So, here I am, with a lot of gay catching up to do. But I'm back NOW and we've been busy the last couple months, so I gotta lot to say. Are you surprised?

Okay, here goes. Going to try to post some pictures here. *crossing fingers* They have nothing to do with this post, I just like'em and I need the practice.

This pic was taken at the 'Rally to Restore Sanity' and you know how much I like making fun of religion.

Also found at the Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert Rally.

I'm BACK bitches, look out.

So that was the post. GOOGLE search likes this blog, so it will help gay folks interested in finding gay INFO on Costa Rica find my 'gay' blog by coming to this one first. It's also the reason I used the word 'gay' so much. Get it? Got it? good. and THANX for your understanding.

Catholic Bishops in Costa Rica are GAY!

The Catholic Church in Costa Rica says gay same sex unions are NOT part of Gods master plan.

I have nothing good to say about the Catholic religion. It SUCKS. That's right, I have absolutely NO respect. It is probably one of the BEST examples of how religions are often used to RULE people through guilt and shame. Of its followers, I would say 60% have an IQ of the sheep they are (sheep are usually sheep because they've only known one shepherd) and the other 40% are the same folks who read 'self-help' books like the newspaper.

Ask me how I really feel?

The Bishops in Costa Rica had a conference recently. This is what they said about gay civil unions, which was really a WARNING directed at lawmakers here in Costa Rica, you know, before they do something stupid, like making gay EQUAL:

“Marriage is not just any union between two human beings,” they stated, explaining that it was “founded by the Creator, who gave it a particular nature...and an undeniable purpose.”

“The legalization of such unions distorts the understanding of fundamental moral values and undermines the institution of marriage as such.”

“In making same-sex unions equal to marriage or the family under the law, the state is acting arbitrarily and is contradicting its own duties,”
the bishops continued.

Nothing new here. This coming from a 'business' which has to have a written policy on how to deal with accusations of pedophilia because of its L...O...N...G history of abuses, can you imagine? Name another Fortune 500 company that has to do that. And if they did, they'd be BOYCOTTED into non-existence... really, think about it.

Their arguments are lame and tired. The dinosaurs of the Catholic Church went on to say this:
The bishops stressed that “men and women with homosexual tendencies must be treated with respect and must not be subject to discrimination.” However, the bishops then reaffirmed the Church’s teaching that “homosexual practices are “objectively contrary to God’s plan for the human being.”
This statement is just out and out STUPID. They can discriminate against 'gay' but you shouldn't. This is akin to the old, "Hate the sin, LOVE the sinner", bullshit. Which by the way is NOT in the bible. Although sometimes subtle and sometimes NOT, the Catholic Church teaches homosexuality is WRONG and abNORMAL, that's it.

Hmmm, interesting. 30 million gays in the United States ALONE, not 30, not three thousand, 30 F'n million. Science, doctors and gays themselves concur, gay is who you are, CASE closed. (Although personally, I'd have chosen it, sex is better). And because some F'ed up book with more contradictions and mistakes in it is misinterpreted, you want to use said book as 'gospel'... pun intended.

The CHURCH will eventually LOSE big time, and gay will not only be tolerated but ACCEPTED. Connect the dots for christ's sake....geez.

Of course if the 'dinosaurs' that are the Catholic Church happen to become extinct sooner rather than later... SWEET!

For your amusement or disgust, whichever the 'gay' may be:

La Avispa is a GAY Club.... but

La Avispa is the ONLY gay PLACE to be on a Sunday night in San Jose.

"Every once in awhile, something a little 'gay' makes it onto the pages of this blog.... and this is one of those times. La Avispa is one of the oldest gay night clubs in San Jose Costa Rica and on one particular night, it's the place to be. Sunday nights at La Avispa draws a HUGE crowd and a really quite diverse crowd at that. The following was posted on my other blog: Doin GAY Costa Rica so if you're one of my more 'open-minded' readers and are ever in San Jose with nothing to do on a Sunday night..... I think you'd have a GREAT night out, straight or otherwise. Oh, D'Angelo and myself don't only go to gay bars, we'll have a video and post on 'Vertigo' one of the BEST night clubs in all of Central America... and straight."

D'Angelo and myself love, Love, LOVE Avispa Discotheque and there IS no better place to party on a Sunday night. I've already written about La Avispa (the wasp) before and if you want a more in-depth look at one of San Jose's favorite gay hang-outs, then go HERE.

Not much has changed since my original article- La Avispa is till the SHIT, except maybe for ONE thing: We made a MUCH better VIDEO to show you the happenings at la Avispa on a Sunday night.

***WARNING!***WARNING!***WARNING!***

La Avispa is notorious for guys trying to separate you from your MONEY. Many will show interest, start dancing with you... and of course want you to buy them drinks,,,, I'm sure you get the picture, but if you decide to play that 'game', just be careful where it leads.

BUT also- this happened when we were La Avispa. We saw our friend Ed dancing with a really CUTE, twink boy. Nothing against Ed, but something just wasn't adding up,,,,, we told him to be CAREFUL and watch himself. Not 5 minutes later when they were dancing, kissing etc. a tranny, working in tandem with CUTE, twink boy, tried to gangster Ed's wallet......problem was, even though Ed was being distracted, his wallet had a chain on it....so, needless to say, he felt the tug. Next thing I know, a tranny goes flying against the wall. CUTE, twink boy got away, the tranny was not so lucky and was picked up by La Avispa security........ you've been warned. Other than that,,,GREAT place to have a GREAT time.

So here it is, our brand new VIDEO on La Avispa. ENjoY!

F*** YOU! very, VERY MUCH... the song.

I swear I TRY to keep my GAY and STRAIGHT blogs separated. But sometimes, I just can't HELP myself. This is one of those times. If I lose some readers, so BE it. The song speaks for itself.

FINALLY, Do'in GAY Costa Rica finds the perfect GAY Song with the perfect GAY message to ALL those bigoted, HOMOPHOBES out there. A song that says what many of us GAY, faggotty types having been trying to say for years- but SO much better. So to ALL my closeted GAY Tico friends, or ANYWHERE else GAY is not accepted, let this SONG give you the COURAGE.

I dedicate this SONG to the following folks/organizations who seem to have a hard time finding the LOVE in their hearts:

* The Roman Catholic Church BUT especially to one of the BIGGEST Roman Catholic PENISES in all of Costa Rica, the Archbishop Hugo Barrantes. That's him, see the resemblance?

* Family members, so-called friends or ANYONE else for that matter who MAKES it, or MADE it HARD for young gay boys or lesbians to COME OUT.

* The redneck owner of Don Rufino's Restaurant in La Fortuna Costa Rica.

* The likes of Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and the very FAT but thankfully DEAD, Jerry Falwell. Side note: The death of that 'fuck' was one of the BEST days of my LIFE, barely edged out by the birth of my children and of course WINNING a BIG ass house in FIJI.

* OH, and last and least, an old child hood friend, Rick Jones, who deleted me off his FACEBOOK friends list for being GAY.

Feel Free to learn the words and SING a long, it's really quite catchy... and GAY!

I'd like to say 'THANX' to the Costa Rica Blogger for turning me on to this video. And you should check out his BLOG, he's got TONS of GREAT Info about Costa Rica... not that we don't.... just sayin.

Gay Discrimination and MY FRIENDS

GAY discrimination did happen at Don Rufinos in La Fortuna Costa Rica.

*Normally I try to keep anything pertaining to 'gay' on my other blog site: Doin GAY Costa Rica, but I really do BELIEVE this post is pertinent to this site as well. Don't worry, it only pertains to GAY discrimination, not 'gay' the act of.

The Don Rufino’s GAY discrimination thing happened so long ago I can’t even remember if it was 2 OR 3 years ago. Don’t know about it… read it here, but you don’t have too, you will still get the gist of this post without reading it.

The Don Rufino’s situation still bothers me to THIS day.

Not because we were discriminated against in an UGLY way, nor for the FACT our then, ‘gay friend and part owner of Rufinos’ never made it RIGHT (well, that still bothers me a little too) but for the fact ALL our ‘friends’, gay or straight, still frequent Don Rufino’s.

There is No disputing what happened. It WAS discrimination and it was because D’Angelo and myself ARE gay. AND it was never made RIGHT by the ‘gay friend and part owner’. Those are the FACTS in a nutshell, like I said, they’re not disputed by ANYONE involved.

Now, this day, it’s just understood that we won’t do anything which includes Don Rufino’s in the equation. So ALL occasions which include a night out of dinner and/or drinks with friends, be it birthday celebrations, anniversary’s, whatever, are handled in one of two ways- we are either NOT invited because Rufino’s is IN the equation (not a problem), or we meet somewhere else to PARTY, like our apartment or Lava Lounge. Everybody’s HAPPY. Kind of.

It’s ALL just accepted as the way things ARE. Not the best of scenarios, but accepted nonetheless. And that’s what bothers me.

I’m positive if a friend had a discriminatory problem in a particular establishment, the problem would be mine as well and I would support the friend through boycotting the establishment. I should note: I don’t necessarily believe in a ‘blind support’, I love you, but you gotta be right, the facts or situation need to basically speak for themselves. This would be a good example, Video: Gran Hotel in San Jose Discriminates. And don’t forget, everyone does AGREE we were discriminated against.

Now in this case, there are mutual friends involved and I understand that. But if I was the mutual friend of both, ‘us’ and the ‘gay part-owner of Rufino’s’, then I would have to put pressure on the friend I believed wrong. I obviously wouldn’t break the friendship of the ‘gay owner’, but I would say that I couldn’t support an establishment who discriminates in any fashion, gay or whatever, but we’d still be friends.

Am I wrong? Is it asking too much? Are the mutual friends unfairly put in the ‘middle’?

It bothers me, that even our gay Tico friend, Henry, goes there. Of all people, he should understand.

So this is what saddens me- since our friends weren’t the target of the discrimination, they obviously see this as NOT their problem. They took themselves out of the ‘middle’ so to speak. Hell, they took themselves out of the ENTIRE equation. To me, this is HUGE.. it’s the BIGGER problem and to me, speaks volumes about people in general. “I can’t see the white robes outside YOUR door from MY house.

Often difficult to admit, many times we're just thankful not to be the TARGETED group.

You either get what I’m saying or you don’t… it is not my intent to get into the ‘BIGGER picture’ of the ills of society in this post.

But what IS COOL- we meet tourists in Fortuna everyday and at some point in the conversation it goes like this:

“Hey, can you guys recommend a good place to eat?”

“Wells, there’s Lava Lounge, which we REALLY like, great atmosphere, good food… there’s also Rufino’s, GREAT food and they also get a nice crowd, but REALLY... we don’t go there on PRINCIPLE anymore.”

They always ask WHY?

So what’s COOL about that you ask?

Every ONE of them tells us, “Well, we won't go to Rufino’s then, fuck that.

Unconditionally. No questions asked. TOTAL support. They don’t give it another thought.

And HEY RUFINOS! We meet and talk to a LOT of people and that doesn’t even include the couchsurfers who stay with us.

This totally renews my FAITH in PEOPLE.

As for our ‘friends’…. they’re NOT really. Sad in a way, but it’s the TRUTH, because think about it, what if the SHIT really hit the fan?

I’m pretty certain, we’d be standing alone. Unless some couchsurfers happen to be staying with US.

Couchsurfers are COOL.

GAY COSTA RICA experiment

Manuel Antonio has been a popular destination among gay travelers for years, and seemed the obvious choice to begin our gay Costa Rica experiment.

The Manuel Antonio/Quepos area (also affectionately known as MANtonio and GAYpos) has been on the gay Costa Rican map for a number of years. San José is perhaps the only place in Costa Rica more gay friendly, but that’s to be expected, big city and all. Manuel Antonio WAS also widely known for their exclusively male, gay nude beach; and it has been enjoyed by thousands of butt-ass-naked gay GUYS over the years, at least until recently. VIDEO:What happened to the nude gay beach in Manuel Antonio? More INFO about GAY Costa Rica.

We needed/wanted this gay experiment to start off on the right foot, and we were pretty certain Manuel Antonio would deliver the positive results we were looking for. HEY, we didn’t say this was scientific.

The Gay Costa Rica Experiment

Most travel books will tell the gay traveler to keep their ‘gayness’ to themselves while traveling in and around Costa Rica, and although it may be one of the better gay friendly Latin American destinations; Costa Rica is definitely a ‘Don’t ask, Don’t tell, Don’t ACT’ country- traditional and steeped in the Catholic religion. They don’t mind knowing you’re gay, but they don’t want to SEE you acting gay (which for this experiment means- Public Displays of Affection). Really, in Costa Rica, ‘gay friendly’ basically means that some entrepreneurs, who were either gay themselves or understood that ‘green’ is ‘green’ no matter who gives it to you, opened a few hotels, restaurants and bars, in search of yet another avenue to separate a tourist from their dollar. It’s not like the country itself is ‘accepting,’ it’s purely a ‘money thing’. So, hence the Frommer’s book tip of keeping your ‘gayness’ to yourself.

You gotta start somewhere and we decided the ‘beaches’ would be a good beginning. So, the hypothesis is as follows:

IF a gay couple engages in appropriate (what a straight couple would take for granted and be acceptable to others) public displays of affection on the beaches of Costa Rica, THEN they will NOT be discriminated against.

So, would the beach at Manuel Antonio be gay friendly or would we find ourselves knee-deep in faggot discrimination?

The main Manuel Antonio beach was packed. We held hands and walked along the beach and back again. We stopped 3 times and engaged in appropriate flirting, making out behavior. Don’t understand? It means whatever it is you would do with your significant other at the beach, if you were feeling romantic and in love- what ‘straight’ people take for granted and others in the area deem as appropriate. There was NO grinding or appearing as if we’d be fucking anytime soon.

THE REACTIONS

We pretty much called this.

The hand-holding didn’t get much PLAY; some held a stare a little longer, but as long as we kept walking, they weren’t that interested. Making out and flirting, we got ‘looks,’ lots of ‘looks’. Some watched because they were bored, some because we happen to be in their line of sight, some seemed interested to see if would eventually have sex right there on the beach, some looked because we’re not that bad looking, and others stared as if they had happened on a REALLY bad car accident. And then there ARE ALWAYS those stares from the folks that just may have been FOLLOWERS of the late Jerry Falwell. Somebody whistled, not sure who, but no one, I mean NO ONE made an inappropriate remark (at least to our face) and no one approached us in an aggressive manner. One gay man lightly pushed his partner while we passed them and said something to the effect of, “why don’t WE do that?” Another gay couple did approach and told us we made a cute couple and it was nice to see 2 people obviously in LOVE. It’s only fair to mention, we also got A LOT of the ‘other’ stares, the 'I wouldn't mind F**k'in around with you in a VERY GAY way' type of stares. Come on, don't be shocked, we are gay and we are in Manuel Antonio for God sake, comes with the territory….. just sayin.

MY TAKE

Manuel Antonio is a tourist HOTSPOT, almost exclusively so. Not many ‘locals’ really. The tourists visiting Manuel Antonio are from all over the globe, so most just believe it’s acceptable behavior, especially the Europeans, and yes, you can tell the difference. It’s the ‘straight’ AMERICANS that were more likely to stare as if we were a bad car accident, and their ignorance was embarrassing, Asians also, but they didn’t have the balls to make themselves obvious, but ike I said, Europeans, by and large, didn’t seem to care. The locals that work the beach looked, but my guess is they had seen it all before, and didn’t give a shit.

We never felt uncomfortable, but I could see that some were VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, after all, there were children to protect from those……….arrogant, gringo fags. I know, they didn’t say it, but a few times you could definitely ‘feel’ the hate.

We will be replicating this behavior on the beaches around Costa Rica because, like I said, you gotta start somewhere and I can assure you, La Fortuna is NOT that place.

*Just to SAVE OUR ASSES- we aren’t recommending you do 'ANYTHING' in regards to ACTING GAY (public displays of affection) while in Costa Rica, I guess we're just the type of guys that don't really give a shit.

OH! and don't forget- Ever want to DO gay La Fortuna, then visit Abercam, La Fortuna's first and only- MEN 'ONLY' GAY HOTEL.
