The Survivor

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardwood.
This is a San Salvador rock iguana. I see something strangely noble in their appearance...similar to an eagle. They have survived so many countless years only to have their existence threatened...by you know who.
The image for this painting was graciously supplied by Lisilk for the WDE at Wet Canvas...Thank you, Li!

A Passion For Painting Award

Woah! Stop the presses! What a pleasant surprise to receive this award from the one and only Sheila! It's called the Passion For Painting and was created by Kim Ratigan. Sheila has it all...she's talented, innovative, and if personalities could have dimples, that would be her! Thank you, Sheila. Check out her blog here.
I'm supposed to pass this along to passionate painters which would be most everyone in the right column. But alas, I'm limited to 7 artists. These folks certainly fill the bill, because they are passionate artists all.

To those I've linked to, in turn you can link to the person who gave you the award, pass it on to 7 other bloggers whose work inspires you, and list 7 things you love. Or not.

Liz Holm
Ann Buckner
James Parker
Holly Zemak
Olga Wagner
Carol Schiff
Patrice Lynne Young

Then I'm supposed to list seven things I love. I've used these things before, but they all still hold true.
1. I love to listen to the sacred sounds of a pre dawn morning...waking bird calls...before the cars and people start to roar.
2. I love the heavenly smell of fresh coffee and sizzling bacon.
3. I love music in the Southern Gospel vein. Other times Country, 50-60's Rock and Roll, Blues, or Classic Standards when I'm in the right mood
4. I love the lure of new tubes of oil paint and the promise which they offer.
5. I love my toy poodle Dolly. She gives unadulterated love and completely forgives my mistakes. If only humans could be as compassionate..
6. I cherish the Holy Word.
7. I love all the excitement of the world of internet art. Blogging is most always a joy!

Eider Pair

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
The image for this painting was supplied by Alain for the WDE at Wet Canvas.
I elected to paint this great looking pair of eider ducks. I was familiar with them through paintings and photos for years...was always fascinated by the beautiful plumage. It was a treat to finally paint 'em.
I first toned the support with red acrylic...it gives me a medium value to work from, plus I like to leave it peeking through the finished product for excitement and harmony.

Under His Gaze

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
Just my personal opinion...Right now America almost feels like an endangered species... much like her symbol, the bald eagle. But the eagle made a dramatic comeback and we can too. We are all under His gaze...even Washington, DC.

Thailand Bay

Acrylic on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
This is a scene from Railay Bay, southern Thailand Andaman sea, Krabi province.
The photo was supplied by Eye for the WDE at Wet Canvas.
A bit of a strange one from me. A landscape and acrylic to boot. But it was fun. As per usual, I eliminated unnecessary detail, pushed the color and toyed with selective, dramatic lighting.

Time to Eat?

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
This was a great loosening up exercise for me.
Most times, prior to starting a painting, I form some sort of idea about what I would like to achieve for that particular painting. There's always a bunch of things I try to keep in mind each time I sit down to paint...but I'll pick out one or two to really concentrate on.
Edges...hard, soft, hidden
Harmony
Value contrast...strong, soft
Chroma...vibrant, subdued
Surface texture...smooth, impasto
And on, and on, and on..............
So the goals for this were loosen up, vibrant color, impasto application.
The painting seems to match the subject matter...sloppy and fun. Let me know what you think.

Thank You, Edward Burton

Yesterday I opened my mail to discover that I had been chosen to receive the "I Care" keepsake. This award was created by James Parker to show his appreciation of fellow bloggers. James is a highly talented artist with a driving desire to keep his audience laughing. But more importantly, he possesses a beautiful heart.
Here is the poem James wrote to accompany the keepsake
I had some folks come visit, my humble little blog
And leave a thoughtful comment, 'bout the painting I had
logged.
I don't know how to tell them, or even where to start,
Of the wondrous gift they gave me, bringing joy to my heart
Some days are dark and lonely...I feel that life's a bore
But those simple words of kindness, have brought sunshine
to my door.
Now, this Keepsake has been presented to me by an extremely gifted artist, Edward Burton. Edward has proven to be an inspiration to many fellow blogging artists, including myself. On top of a heavy schedule of creating top notch paintings, it seems he always has time to comment upon fellow artists work...knowing just what to say. Thank you, Edward.

Since I am the humble and honored recipient of this keepsake, I should pass it on to two deserving artists who make the blogosphere a brighter place.
Karen Hargett
A very talented lady who puts her genuine love of animals on display for everyone to see in each painting she does. Her comments are truly helpful and inspiring. You must check her out.
Trevor Lingard
If you are looking for absolutely amazing watercolor art, then look no further. This man makes the almost impossible appear easy...the mark of talent! I always enjoy it when he stops by my blog. Please check him out.

Sushi In Soy

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
Sushi sitting in a pool of soy sauce. This is yet another offering to Karin Jurick's DSFDF. Never ate it...never painted it...heck, I never even saw it in person! I know. I need to get out more, don't I? I let intuition be my guide for this...so if ya don't like it, don't blame me..blame that danged ol' intuition. I had to do the background a couple of times.

This is done in the style of Patrick Nagel. He Gained fame in his pop art/poster style by illustrating glamorous ladies for Playboy Mag.
This is acrylic on 6x5 Bristol Vellum paper.

Pelicans...A Different Light

Close Ups

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.

For the beach scene posted yesterday, I used dark saturated color in contrast with a few intense lights. So I tried the same approach here. I think I like it...at least at the present time.
This is oil on a 5x7 gessoed hardboard. I first primed the support with black gesso...it makes the color zing right from the first stroke.
The blues aren't quite so overwhelming IRL. They refused to adjust properly.

This painting was done for the WDE at Wet Canvas. The images were graciously supplied by Valri.

Beach Outing

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
There's something about this strange color palette that I like. The hot neon pink on the child was strange but I'm glad that I used it. Th dark deep green is a choice I've never used for an ocean before, but I'm glad I used it. Same goes for using a sky that dark blue for a sunny beach scene. I'm pretty used to a new choice working it's way into a painting occasionally, but this bugger's full of 'em. What fun!

Terrific Trio

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
This is my latest entry for Karin Jurick's DSFDF. The reference photo shows a shop window full of mannequin heads and wigs. I isolated it down to three ( there were a bunch in the photo...looked like a PTA meeting). Their colors were mismatched and spooky looking. Hmmm...come to think of it they kinda look like a trio of Super Powered Heroines! Looks like Giraffe Girl on the right...Invaluable to let the others know what is occurring in upper story windows...Strettttcccchhhh.

Invented Color

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
Like many of you, I suppose, I have looked at the work of many, many, talented artists on the internet over the last few years. This has good rewards by showing you what is possible and revealing many things you've never thought of. Techniques and styles galore!

The downside for me was being slowly removed from being myself. I got the feeling that emulation was controlling my painting. So, with that in mind, I dug back and found one of mine that I liked from '06. I painted a loose copy...different crop etc.

The color choices are more intuitive and invented. I don't want to produce a copy of nature or a photograph. I want to produce a piece of art...a painting. At least that's how I feel today. Tomorrow- who knows??
