Mountains & Plains

Hello Everyone,

You probably have been wondering if all I have been doing as of late is paper piecing?  The answer is no... I have actually been doing other things too.  I know... shocker!

Oh and there is a little surprise at the end of this post, so stick with me.

I thought you might like to see..

I designed another quilt for Quilt Magazine out of Australian Aboriginal fabrics and Kona Cotton.  I wanted to use a great variety of prints and make it more scrappy looking.

It is a combination of strip pieced triangles for the border and half log cabin blocks for the body of the quilt.

A fun Australian print for the backing.

A leaf print for an edge to edge quilting design.

Bright and brilliant, just like I like it, but a scrap busting appeal.  I know you all have TONS of scraps right?

Here is the whole quilt. It is 60" X 60" square.  But you could really enlarge it to whatever you like... or make it smaller.

For variation, here I have done it in African fabrics....

Yes there is a stray block taking up the design wall... just ignore that one.  You can find African fabrics in my shop online by clicking here, Australian fabrics can by found here.

Now for the big reveal...

Here is the photo from the magazine.  Don't they do a great job?  I love how the quilt looks draped over the chair.

Here is their flat shot... again they do a fantastic job!  The quilt looks gorgeous!

Here is the magazine that you can find it in... As luck may have it you can find it in my online shop.

Click on the following to find:

Now for the surprise...

This is a FREE downloadable pattern.  You can find it by clicking..

I hope you enjoyed the tour of the Mountains & Plains!!  If you decide to make it after downloading the pattern, please send me a photo!  I would love to see your version!

Until Next Time...

What I Am Working On....

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday was Wind It Up Wednesday at my classroom studio.  I have photos of what the other ladies were working on and will show them tomorrow.  However, I wanted to share with you what I am working on right now.

It is no secret that I love Australian Aboriginal fabrics.  The designs, color, and feel are just wonderful to the eye and to the touch.  So much that you can do the possibilities are endless.

I started by cutting up strips.

Arranging them in pleasing orders.   Yes, that is some African fabrics that you see in the back of the photo.  I love them too!

The piles of prettiness are always inspiring to me and they were to the ladies that were with me yesterday.

Some simple designing, coupled with a....

speedy sewing machine, makes for a design that you will be seeing soon in an upcoming Quilt Magazine.  So stay tuned for the final glorious design.

If you would like some Australian fabrics you can click here, or if you prefer African you can click here.  But I will warn you they are addicting.

The Saga Of My Personal Fabric Shopper

Hello Everyone,

As many of you know, I own an online fabric shop.  From time to time my fabric reps stop by to show me the new lines of fabric.  We usually sit down, to see them all and then I begin ordering.

Well, yesterday was no different, except that my personal fabric shopper had to assist me.  Let me tell you the tale...

Pavi came by to see which Kona Cotton Solids that I needed to re-stock and any new ones that needed to be ordered.  He made himself comfy next to Mary's iPad to make sure the orders were correct.

Lots of lovely colors!  Re-stocked a bunch and ordered a few new ones!!

Pavi says "Let me make sure that there are no duplicates... I need to provide quality control today!"

"Whew this fabric shopping really is hard work.  I am getting very sleepy."

"This is a great place to lay my head and a great way to keep an eye on things."

"Boy, those ladies are kinda harsh... they wouldn't let me sleep on the keypad.  I think this is a good spot under some of the fabric swatches, they won't mind this... in fact they can't even see me."

"I think my Mom picked a few of these batiks... but I was underneath and really couldn't help her on this one.  I just love helping though."

Stay tuned to see what Pavi helped me pick out for the shop!!  Just click here to see what we have in stock now.

Serengeti Serenade Revisited

Hello Everyone,

It has been a long time since I spoke of this quilt.  The last post I did was in November, you can click here to read it.  There is a bit of a backstory about the quilt.  Since November, I quilted, bound, and gifted it to my hubby for Christmas.  So it is time to show you the finished quilt.

It was a beautiful day on Saturday, so I took it outside for a photo shoot.  But not until after I de-furred it from the cats laying all over it... black fabric and cat fur don't really mix well.

A close up of some of the African fabrics that I have collected along the way.  I just love how scrappy and colorful it turned out.

The quilting I did was an African leaf design.  I thought this went well with the theme of the quilt.  I chose an edge to edge design as the fabrics were so busy you may lose some of the quilting.  Also, since this quilt is getting used, putting my blood, sweat and tears into a custom job wasn't going to work.

I pieced the backing, but you really can see the quilting here on this black section.  Ooooo... looks like I missed some stray fur.

Here it is... Serengeti Serenade.  My husband loves it and so do I!  If you come to the quilt show in November you will see it hanging there.  You can also enter a quilt in the show, if you like.  Just click here for more information and to download an entry form.

Do you collect interesting fabrics?  What kinds?

My "interesting" fabrics categories are African, Silk, hand dyes, and black and whites.  But as you know, I have tons of others in my stash and shop.

Until Next Time...
