How to Create a Wall Plate Sculpture

wall plate sculpture

Hello everyone Cinnamon here, I am hoping that you all are home safe and sound. I've been doing some home improvement projects since the quarantine, so I decided to work on a wood wall plate cover that I brought some time ago. I will walk you through the steps that I took to create this project.

Supplies: Creative Paperclay®, unfinished wood base switch plate cover,
Pencil, Sand paper, Acrylic paint, Sealer, Varnish

I started out my design by sketching out my idea directly onto the plate with a pencil.
I went with the robot that I created in a previous tutorial out of a vinyl toy. He was inspired by a toy that I had as a child.

Creative Paperclay does well with adhering to porous surfaces such as wood. In the
photos above, I am painting water onto the areas that I want to stick clay to. I dabbed
a drop of water onto the clay as well and mashed small pieces to the damp surface of
the plate until they were held securely. I shaped the clay as much as I could in this
damp state with my clay knife and continued to fill out the sketch.

After you are done building up the clay and shaping it, sit it aside
and allow it to dry which would be roughly 24 hours. You can always
come back and add more clay by using water as I did above.

When the piece dries and no longer needs clay to be added
to it, sand it down to smooth out the rough edges. I am using
an 800 grit piece of sandpaper to get it nice and smooth.

The great thing about paperclay is that you can draw on it. Here
I am mapping out some details from the robot to be painted later.

I am used acrylic paint to finish up the piece. I find
it easier to work on the background first and then
work my way up to painting the smaller details.

He looks a bit different from my first robot Alphie,
but they at least look like they can be related. I have a
hard time painting small letters so I left them out this time.

Here is the plate out in the wild. Thanks for following!

Creative Paperclay® Lover's Eye

My friends call me a mad art scientist because I love to experiment. In this case, I am using a Creative Paperclay® element as a Lover's Eye inside a cigar box that has been laser cut and etched then embellished. The embellished clay eye becomes the "sweet" spot in this piece of art.

SUPPLY LIST

Creative Paperclay®
Acrylic Paint
Alcohol Inks
Silicone Molds
Cigar Box
Metal Leaf
Pearls & Rhinestones
Glass Eye

The Creative Paperclay® flower was dry brushed with a Titan Buff acrylic paint after a wash of Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold acrylic paint had dried. A glass eyeball was glued to the center then vintage pearls were glued around it.

The inspiration for this project was Lover's Eyes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy British and European lovers exchanged "eye miniatures" -- love tokens so clandestine that even now, in the majority of cases, it is impossible to identify their recipients or the people they depict.
Next I took a cigar box to the local makers space ( a makers space is a shared workshop and artist/artisan community.) These spaces throughout the country allow you to use 3D printers and laser cutters/etchers as well as many other techno tools. Often local junior colleges have these as well.

Before taking it in, I applied metal leaf to the box, sanded it and then worked out the design I planned to etch into it.

I laser cut the hole in the center and etched the floral design into the metal leaf box. I painted the etched flowers with alcohol inks then added the rhinestones and crosses. The inside of the box was painted black.

I added my Creative Paperclay® eye by building up a backing to it and gluing it to the back of the box so the eye floated in the hole. A circle of rhinestones was added before I placed it in place.

Have fun. Dream in Color.

Butterflies and Blooms

Hello everyone! Jenn here today sharing this collage created using Delight™ from Creative Paperclay®!
I am constantly molding flowers and other embellishments using Delight™ because they are a great thing to have on hand. For this project I pulled out my stash and made a collage!

Start by coating a small canvas with heavy white gesso and allow to dry. Then gather up molded pieces and arrange them in the composition you like.

Apply heavy white gesso again making sure to get everything coated. Next, add color by starting with a base color such as the Plaid acrylic in Key West (Apple Barrel®) that I chose. Water down by spritzing with a water bottle and dab off excess. Dry with a heat tool.

Continue layering colors in the palette you choose. Build the colors one at a time drying in between each. I used several products in my collage which I have listed at the end of this post.

Add art stones and Dew Drops from The Robin's Nest for texture.

For my collage I used the following products:
Prima and Plaid silicone molds
Art Stones
Mini Art Stones
Wooden swirl embellishments
Plaid™ acrylics
Irridescent acrylics
Art Anthology Colorations
5 X 7 canvas
Heavy White Gesso

Thanks so much for viewing my post today! I hope that you are inspired to give this amazing clay a try and create something amazing!

Molding and Repurposing with Delight®

Hello everyone! Jenn here today sharing a fun project! Have you ever tried Delight™ air dry modeling compound from Creative Paperclay®? It is so versatile and dries fast! When used with silicone molds it holds its shape and so much detail can be achieved!
I had this boring cardboard box that I wanted to use. With it's tall shape it will make a great storage box for markers!

I coated the box first with heavy white gesso twice and allowed it to dry. Next I used a Prima silicone mold with Delight™ to create the pretty strips. I bent them around the box to get the right bends and let them dry.

Using a matte gel medium I adhered the strips around the top and bottom of the box. I then created some flowers using silicone molds and Delight™. These were also left to dry.

Supply List:
Silicone molds
Matte Gel medium
Heavy white gesso

The Delight™ is amazing for molding embellishments for any project! Join me for my July post here where I will reveal the finished, painted, and embellished box!

Thanks so much for viewing my post today! I hope that you are inspired to give this amazing clay a try and create something amazing!

Mosaic HeART Journal

Hello Creative Friends! Jenn here with a new Creative Paperclay® project to share with you. This mosaic heART journal was so much fun to create.

For the tiles, I used both Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material and Delight® air dry modeling compound.
Additional supplies used:
Several rubber stamps in various patterns
Hot glue gun and glue
Clay shaping tools
Rolling pin
Cutting utensil
Acrylic paints in teal, fuschia, and green
White Gesso
Plain notebook or journal hardbound
paintbrushes

One of the many great things about Creative Paperclay® and Delight® is the amount of detail you can achieve by stamping into it. This is how the tiles are created. Using a rolling pin, roll out clay to desired thickness and cut into various sized tiles. Next, use rubber stamps to press into the clay and create the patterns.

Use a hot glue gun to adhere them to the cover of the journal. Roll out a long piece of clay to cover the outer binding. Press a pattern into this strip as well. Once all of the tiles are in place, allow the clay to dry overnight. Cover with white gesso and let dry.

Finally, paint the tiles using an array of bright acrylic paints as shown.

To add a little flair to my cover, I molded a heart using Creative Paperclay®, painted it to match, and adhered to the front!

Both Creative Paperclay® and Delight® are amazingly easy to work with and can be used for a wide variety of projects.

Thanks so much for viewing my post today! I hope it inspires you to get creative!

Botanical Pendant

Hello, Creative  Friends and Fans!! Jenn here today to share with you how easy it is to create jewelry using Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material! I have created this Botanical Pendant doing just that!

Supplies Needed:
A mold or a stamp (I used a stamp)
Paints
File block (meant for fingernails)
Satin cord
Silver jewelry findings
Charms
Necklace connector

First, roll out some Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material onto a craft mat or other non-stick surface. Once it is the thickness you desire for your pendant, stamp the shape into it. Cut off excess and use a paintbrush handle or stick to put a hole in the top. Set this aside to dry for 1-2 days.

Once your pendant is dry, use a filing block to smooth any rough edges and remove all the dust.
Next, prepare your satin rope using findings. Attach clasp ends using a strong adhesive to ensure that it holds.

Next, Paint your pendant in your desired color and allow it to dry. Finally, loop rope through a silver ring, attach to your pendant using a large jump ring. Add charms to the jump ring and there you have it! A beautiful and simple piece of jewelry you can give as a gift or wear yourself!

Embossed Hearts

Hello Creative Paperclay® Fans!! Jenn here today to share with you another unique way to use your paperclay! Making these embossed hearts is easier than you may think.

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday season and that you are ready to get even more creative this year.

Have you ever used embossing folders? Have you tried to use them with Creative Paperclay®? Well, that is exactly how these adorable little hearts were created.

First, gather the supplies needed:
Creative Paperclay® modeling material
Selection of embossing folders
Rolling pin
Wax paper
Medium grit file
Tool to create small hole
Heart shaped cookie cutters

Once you have all your supplies ready, lay a sheet of wax paper down. Roll some paperclay into a ball and roll it out to the desired thickness using your rolling pin.

Next, place your rolled out clay into an embossing folder and close it. Use your rolling pin to make a nice impression of the pattern onto the clay.

Gently remove the embossed clay and place it back down on your wax paper. Using your cookie cutters, cut out as many hearts as desired. Make sure you remove the clay from the cookie cutters gently so you do not affect the pattern with fingers, nails, etc.  If you will be using your hearts to create jewelry, place a small hole in the top with a paper piercer. If your going to use them as embellishments you will not need the hole. I will be using my hearts for more than one project so some only some were pierced. Leave your cut out hearts on the wax paper to dry for the night. This may take longer depending on thickness of the hearts.

Once your hearts have dried they are ready to paint, stain, etc. and use to create jewelry or as embellishments on other projects. Use your file to gently remove all of the rough edges. If you look at the hearts below, you can see the before and after filing effect.

I have painted one using an oxidized silver texture set from Art Anthology to show how they look painted.

I just love these hearts and how easy they were to create! I hope you are inspired to get some Creative Paperclay® and embossing folders and try this technique! the possibilities are endless!
