New Vineland Bread

The new bakery opening up in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto!
The Lompoc Ghetto, known by wine aficionados as a hot spot for good wine, soon will house a business of a different flavor — a commercial bakery founded by the owners of a Ghetto winery.

New Vineland Bread is a new project from the team behind New Vineland/Piedrasassi Wines: couples Peter and Amy Pastan, from Washington, D.C., and Melissa Sorongon and Sashi Moorman, both residents of Lompoc.

Under his company, September Consulting, managed by Sorongon, Moorman consults for other wineries, including Evening Land Vineyards, Sandhi Wines and Stolpman Vineyards.
Peter Pastan is chef and owner of Two Amys Pizzeria and Obelisk, the latter a small but elite eatery near Dupont Circle with “a serious bread program,” he said.

Pastan, New Vineland’s baker, Goleta resident Kate Heller, and Sorongon have in recent weeks put the custom made, wood-fired oven through its paces, utilizing two hot-burning woods — walnut and trunks from old grape vines — in an effort to “stabilize” it, Pastan said. - Santa Maria Times

WhoDidily Cupcakes coming to downtown Santa Barbara

WhoDidily cupcakes of Montecito is taking their baking racks on the road and opening up a new storefront in Paseo Nuevo, in the space where the departed Cheese Shop was.

WhoDidily has gotten lots of press in the past couple of years. They were featured on FoodNetwork's Cupcake Wars last year. Then before that, they had a little legal rumble with the 800lb gorilla of the cupcake world, Sprinkles. (That was when WhoDidily was known as Sprinkled Pink Cupcake Couture.)

The local cupcake batter battle gets a little heated. We'll see how the crumbs settle with Crushcakes and Bella Dolce seeing new competition in their midst.

Cake Balls....

Easter Cake Pops

The next "big" thing after cuppycakes?

I learned that these small cake balls are edging out trendy cupcakes and mini-size desserts to satisfy those who have a sweet tooth. Poor me, I seem to be out of the loop on what's in on the culinary scene. Hey, they were even offered in the Neiman Marcus gift-giving catalog and are showing up at upscale bakeries.

And wait, there's more! According to a story in The Dallas Morning News, home baker Robin Ankeny opened The Cake Ball Co., a custom baking and mail-order business.
To make these cake balls, all you have to do is bake a cake (whatever pleases your fancy) and once it's cooled, you simply crumble it up, mix with any kind of frosting, then roll the mixture into tiny balls. Then -- here's where your creative juices can run wild -- the balls can be dipped in chocolate, nuts or whatever confectionery coating you can think of. - Times Picayune

Bella Dolce's signs are gone

and the business card holder on the door is no more. Sadly it looks like the retail frontage in Arlington Court for Bella Dolce is not "cooking" along. Which is a shame, because their cupcakes rocked!

Are Circus Animals coming back?

Archway bakery (maker of Mother's cookies) is back in action and the workers re-hired.
An Ohio bakery shut down in October is bustling again, with 60 eager employees who had expected a Christmas on the unemployment rolls.

Some 300 workers lost their jobs when the Archway cookie factory in Ashland, Ohio, was suddenly closed by the private equity firm that owned it. The workers also were left without benefits like health insurance.

But then Lance Inc., a Charlotte, North Carolina-based snack food company, purchased Archway at a bankruptcy auction. And last week 60 workers were asked to return immediately, with perhaps more coming back in the months ahead.

When it promised to reopen the bakery, Lance gave all 300 former Archway workers a $1,500 prepaid debit card.

...David Singer, CEO of Lance, says the gift cards were a way of letting Ashland know the new owners are different. "We wouldn't do it willy-nilly," Singer says. "We do want to make money. But this is the pool of folks that we intend to hire. We just wanted to let them know who we were."

The 60 workers rehired so far are earning their previous salary and retained their seniority. They also were provided health insurance from day one. -
CNN
Is this a delicious piece of Christmas spirit, or what?

Send these folks a little thank you and suggest (OK, in my case "demand") that Circus Animals be brought back.

Start your day with any of Andersen's mouthwatering pastries—fresh out of the oven at 8:00AM every morning. We use approximately 2 tons of marzipan every year in these tasty delights. Try the traditionally Danish Kringle or Butter Ring, or maybe a warm apple strudel straight from the oven.

Seems that Political Shenanigans

can be good for bakery sales.
The Milford bakery that riffed on a fruitless search for Jimmy Hoffa is now tackling the text message scandal involving Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty, his former chief of staff.

Cookies shaped like cell phones and decorated with text messages saying "Busted" and "I'm sorry" went on sale for $1.75 Thursday at the Milford Baking Co., said owner Laura Hedwig.

"We wanted to have some fun with it," she said.

...In Milford, Hedwig sold thousands of cupcakes with green hands poking out of chocolate frosting in 2006 when the FBI was searching for Hoffa's remains on a horse farm in the community. - FreePress
