Did Esquire Sabotage Book Sales ?

WASHINGTON – WND is filing a lawsuit in the nation's capital today seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages for a faked "report" in Esquire magazine that falsely said a New York Times best-selling book, "Where's the Birth Certificate? The Case That Barack Obama Is Not Eligible To Be President," by Jerome Corsi, Ph.D., had been pulled from store shelves by the publisher.

The claim has been filed by attorney Larry Klayman for Joseph Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND, on behalf of the company, WND Books, himself and author Corsi.

Defendants named include Esquire Magazine Inc., parent company the Hearst Corp., and Mark Warren, the author of the false article.

"You can't just make up words and put them in people's mouths, deliberately misleading the public, deliberately defaming others and deliberately lying to inhibit commerce," Farah said. "Media institutions such as Esquire magazine and its parent, the Hearst Corporation, for which I was employed for nearly a decade, should know better. And they will as a result of this lawsuit."

"We are reacting to one of the most egregious abuses of freedom of the press that I have ever witnessed in my 30-plus year career in journalism," he said. "We are taking this action not because we desire to restrict First Amendment-guaranteed protections, but because we want to police them and guard them."

The claim explains how a significant number of people disbelieve Barack Obama's claims to be eligible to be president of the United States. A recent poll showed half the nation, some 150 million-plus people, want Congress to investigate his eligibility.

"President Barack Hussein Obama, wanting to try to eliminate this issue among voters and the American populace, recently released what many people, including Plaintiff Corsi, have reason to believe is a fraudulent birth certificate purporting to show that he was born in Hawaii," the claim explains.

"Just as Plaintiff's book was released, Defendants, each and every one of them, caused to be published and did publish at a minimum on the Internet, nationally and internationally, and specifically in the District of Columbia, an article entitled 'Breaking: Jerome Corsi's Birther Book Pulled from Shelves?,' about Plaintiffs' book," the lawsuit explains.

A retired U.S. military commander who brought a court challenge to Barack Obama's tenure in the Oval Office says the mounting evidence indicating the "Certificate of Live Birth" he released in April is fake should shock the American public.

"If everyone was intellectually honest, they would admit those images put on the Internet are forgeries," said CDR Charles Kerchner, whose lawsuit that alleged Congress failed in its constitutional duty to make sure the man elected president was eligible for the office, was turned down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

He cited the work released this week by longtime Adobe software book author and computer expert Mara Zebest.

Bias: Have you heard the story about Rep. Dennis Kucinich praising Syrian President Bashar al-Assad? Why would you? After all, Kucinich is a Democrat, the one party the mainstream press is happy to cover for.

Kucinich, visiting Syria this week, has reportedly said that al-Assad, who's busy murdering his own people to quell opposition to his ruthless regime, is "highly loved and appreciated by the Syrians."

Had such a statement been made by a Republican, it would have been all over the news. But so far, it's caused just a few gentle ripples. Why bother chasing it down? Kucinich has already blamed translators for getting his statement wrong. What more do you need?
Then there's the other apparent nonstory of Rep. Laura Richardson. This week a watchdog group — Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington — called for a criminal probe of the California Democrat, saying she illegally required congressional staff to help in her re-election. She should be a juicy target for a press digging for scandals. But apparently she doesn't rate.

And how about that campaign fundraising video President Obama filmed inside the White House? It could be a violation of election law. Or Obama's gaffe when he told soldiers at the 10th Mountain Division last week that he'd given the Medal of Honor to living war vet Jared Monti, who was actually killed in Iraq in 2006. But we can't expect reporters to cover such things when they're all chasing down Michele Bachmann's foster children.

The press has deliberately chosen to ignore how Greece got here and why they are having such troubles. Sure, the press (and the Greeks themselves) have already laid the blame at banks, and politicians and to be sure these institutions and people are certainly a significant part of the problem. They are also blaming the US, Germany, the dollar, oil prices, and lack of tourism as well.

What is ignored in all of this reporting is what has really caused this mess in the first place. The underlying and foundational problem is socialism.

Separating people from the consequences of their behaviors, removing financial rewards for hard work, rewarding laziness, punishing risk taking and success, all of these are systemic in socialist societies, and they always lead to unsustainable results -- both individually and corporately. In a country where nearly half of the people work for the state, did anyone write about the idiocy of that financial model? Who is paying for all those state workers? This is truly amazing that journalists and commentators are stepping over this glaring reality. Greece has run out of other people's money, and whether the bailouts and austerity measures pass or not is going to be irrelevant if the underlying economic model is not changed.

It is not hard to envision the money running out- again -- in just a matter of 3-4 years.

Socialism is for dreamers and people who are intellectually lazy. It draws to its flame those who willfully ignore economic realities and eventually leads to the impoverishment of its own citizens, putting society on a steady downward path of economic and cultural decline.

If I were a teacher, I would be instructing my students to watch, listen and learn. This is, very truthfully, a teachable moment for everyone. [emphasis mine]  (Full article)

George Weigel, June 27, 2011- According to a New York Times story of June 25, an essential part of the coalition that brought “gay marriage” to the Empire State consisted of Republican financial high-rollers who gave Republican legislators cover for voting in favor of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s “marriage equality” bill while generously funding the pro–“gay marriage” ground campaign, and who “were inclined to see the issue as one of personal freedom, consistent with their more libertarian views.”

More intellectual and political confusion would be hard to pack into one sentence.

“Gay marriage” in fact represents a vast expansion of state power: In this instance, the state of New York is declaring that it has the competence to redefine a basic human institution in order to satisfy the demands of an interest group looking for the kind of social acceptance that putatively comes from legal recognition. But as Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York and others argued during the days before the fateful vote on June 24, the state of New York does not have such competence, and the assertion that it does casts an ominous shadow over the future. For if the state in fact has the competence, or authority, to declare that Adam and Steve, or Eve and Evelyn, are married, and has the related authority to compel others to recognize such marriages as the equivalent of what we have known as marriage for millennia, then why stop at marriage between two men or two women? Why not polyamory or polygamy? Why can’t any combination of men and women sharing financial resources and body parts declare itself a marriage, and then demand from the state a redress of its grievances and legal recognition of it as a family? On what principled ground is the New York state legislature, or any other state legislature, going to say “No” to that, once it has declared that Adam and Steve, or Eve and Evelyn, can in fact get married according to the laws of the state?

There is a curious rhetorical fact that has usually gone unremarked in these debates, but which is worth pointing out. That what the New York state legislature approved has to be described, not as marriage, but as “gay marriage” or “same-sex marriage” is itself a verbal indicator that what is being done here is counterintuitive. We all know, or thought we knew, what marriage is, and to add the qualifier “gay” or “same-sex” is a tacit admission by the proponents of the practice that it requires an appeal to authority to enforce what seems strange, odd, not right. The verbal tic of “gay marriage” or “same-sex” marriage is thus itself a rhetorical warning sign that what was done in Albany was an exercise in raw state power, the state’s asserting that it can do X simply because it claims that it has the power to do so.


And that is an exercise of power that libertarians ought, in theory, to resist, not support.  [snip]
