Mixed Media Frame by Jenny Alia

3:30 AM 3 Comments

Hello!  It's Jenny here with you today.  Since the current challenge theme is Anything Goes I thought I'd make something different than a card.  This is a picture frame made out of chipboard.  I've never created anything like this before so I took lots of photos along the way.

First I cut three pieces of thin chipboard to 5.5" square.  I cut the middle out of two of the three pieces using two different sizes of the Scalloped Square Stackers.  The two pieces with square windows will be used to double mat the central image and the whole square is for the back of the frame.

I painted the frame with the larger square opening with a clear matte gesso.  When the gesso was dry I glued elements from the new Quadrafoil Accents die set (also cut out of chipboard) on top and then painted the entire frame with a metallic distress paint.  I wasn't worried about the paint being even because I planned to cover it.

I sponged black distress ink on top because I wanted contrast and an antique feel.  The crackle paste I used suggested a black color base.  There was still a metallic sheen to the frame.

I covered the frame with white Crackle paste, leaving less on the raised Quadrafoil Accents so they'd show up more.  I didn't worry about neatness.  Variations makes the crackle interesting when dry.

My heat tool unfortunately went on strike so while I was waiting I added clear crackle glaze to the edges of the flowers.  The large flower was created using the Stacker Flower 5 die.  The smaller roses are from the Tea Rose Medium die.  They were colored with distress ink and sprayed with shimmery mists.

Once the crackle glaze was dry and I moved around the flowers a bit to determine placement.

The sentiment paired well with the vibrant flowers but everything felt too bright so I added brown distress ink to the frame and flowers.

The second piece of chipboard with the smaller window was colored with bronze metallic paint.  I sandwiched a piece of clear acetate from toy packaging between the two chipboard mats before gluing the chipboard together.

I added a stand to the third piece of chipboard so the frame can stand independently.  The chipboard was thin so I cut and glued two pieces together to create the stand and scored and folded the top.

Brads connect the stand to the frame.  I punched two small holes through the top part of the stand as well as through the back of the frame and then threaded two brads through the holes.

Last in the assembly, I glued the front of the frame to the back only gluing around the bottom and sides, leaving the top open in case I want to change the image inside.  I put heavy books on top to hold the chipboard together while it dried.

The Fern Leaves were coated with a sepia gloss and I adhered the flowers and leaves to the frame with the same glaze.

Shasta Daisy Video Tutorial with Bonnie Garby

3:30 AM 5 Comments
Hi everyone.  I'm Bonnie from Make Time to Craft and I'm so excited to be the newest member of the Cheery Lynn Designs design team.  I've been creating with Cheery Lynn Dies for a while now and it was a dream come true to be invited to join these talented ladies!
I love to get a lot of use from all my dies so I'm always looking for new ideas.  The Royal Scandinavian Doily from Cheery Lynn Designs is one of my favorites and it has two pieces.  I've used the outer piece many times and this card uses the inner square to create a beautiful lacy overlay.  The card is embellished with some pretty Shasta Daisy flowers which I'll show you how to make below and a cute little double bow made with Shimmer Satin Ribbon from Really Reasonable Ribbon.
Below is a quick photo tutorial on how I made the lacy overlay.  The first thing I do is apply Stick It! adhesive to the back of the paper I am cutting whenever I use an intricate die.  This is the best adhesive I've found for intricate die cuts because there is a little 'play' time for you to get everything where you want it before it's permanently affixed.  Once you have the die cut placed where you want it, you simply press it down with your fingers or a small brayer.
For this technique I cut my white cardstock to the desired size for my card and then I draw very faint guidelines for the placement of the die.  I made the lines quite dark for you to see for this tutorial, but make them as light as possible since you will have to erase them when you are done.  Then just run the die through your machine and move to the next position using the guide lines for placement.
Once you have the whole piece cut you will peel the backing from the Stick It! or apply your adhesive of choice and adhere it to the base.  Now that you have stabilized the lacy overlay, you can carefully erase your registration marks.  I love the look of the kraft background and the white lacy overlay.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE making handmade paper flowers??

Well I do!  The Shasta Daisy flower is a quick and easy flower and by changing the colors, you can make it work for just about any holiday or season.

I hope you enjoy my Shasta Daisy video tutorial below.

Twin cards and tutorial by Cohenna

Hello everyone. My name's Monika. I run a blog: My magic worldI love cards with
all the flowers. I do all flowers myself, then they are unique. Privately I'm a wife
and mother of two urchins. I live in a small village. Craft is my passion
and a way to relaxIt is a great pleasure to appear here as a guest designer.
Thank you for the invitation to this group of
extremely talented girls. I hope that my work will inspire you :)

Today I wanted to show two cards embellished with flowers created
with the Build a Flower #2 die.

Here is the step by step for making the flowers.
We need 5 large and 5 smaller petals.

Add a bit of distress ink, for my card I inked the entire petals.

Dry emboss the edge of the petals - you want it wavy

Trim the ends of the smaller petals

Glue together the larger petals using a piece of paper as the base

Pinch the ends of the smaller petals to make bowls

Glue the smaller petals of the flower to the larger petal base

Add a thick layer of glue to the edges of the petals and then
sprinkle with glitter; shaking off the excess.

then set aside to dry

Add glitter in the same way to the stamens, then make a hole
in the center of the flower and slide the stamens through.

Add a large pearl to the center of the stamens and the
 flower is finished.

I trimmed the center of my French Pastry Doily so the DP
would  show through, added assorted greenery and some
white flourishes and then placed my flowers.

I hope you have found my tutorial helpful.

Center Step Card Tutorial

1:58 PM 6 Comments

One of my favorite dies from Cheery Lynn Designs is the Center Step Card die.   There have been a lot of requests for a tutorial showing how to use this die.  So I have done a little step by step for you.  First of all, there are a total of 6 dies in the package and they are resting on a magnetic sheet.  You do not use the magnetic sheet in your machine, that is simply for storage.

Take a piece of card stock and cut it down to 6 x 12 inches (or slightly less than 6 if you are using a Cuttlebug)  Obviously you will need extended plates for your die cut machine.  Using the largest die, which is your card base, tape it down to your card stock and run it through your die cut machine.

With the card stock right side up, the above picture shows you the direction you want to fold your score lines.  I burnish these scores line down quite well.

And here you see what the base looks like after the folding.

Now it is time to die cut the 5 individual panels.  Choose your papers, the die on the top in the photo above is the inside panel.  Tape each die down and run them through your die cut machine.

And here is the front of my card with the panels attached.

And the inside of my card with the panel attached.  Very simple and oh, so gorgeous.  Stop by on July 15th for the Cheery Lynn Designs July 2014 new release to see how I have decorated my card.  For dies used in the sample card at the top of this post, visit my previous blog post here.
