New in My Shop: Felt Robins Tutorial (& Robin Embroidery Pattern)

I've been busy working behind the scenes on my felt bird sewing patterns, and the first one is now in my shops! Hurrah!

My robins pattern includes templates and step by step instructions for sewing felt robin brooches and felt robin Christmas ornaments.

Once you've bought the pattern, you can use it to make items for yourself and as gifts for friends and family or to sell at craft fairs, etc (as long as you credit me as the designer).

I've also included a robin and holly embroidery pattern, which you can stitch onto anything you fancy or frame in a 5 inch embroidery hoop.

Festive Birds

I've finally made a start on writing my Christmas cards and wrapping some gifts and while gathering my supplies together I noticed a clear birdie theme appearing. I guess this shouldn't be too surprising as I do love birds!

The cards I'm sending this year include these Birds & Berries cards from Dee Beale...

... and Holly Birds cards from Kate Slater:

I'm wrapping gifts with some of Kate Slater's lovely Robin gift wrap...

... and some of the lush Charley Harper bird gift wrap I bought from Fred Aldous last year which isn't specifically Christmas-y but who cares! The more birdie goodness the merrier, I reckon.

(All images borrowed from the respective stores I've linked to).

P.S. If you're looking for some nice tags for your Christmas gifts, do check out the printable gift tag round-up I posted a couple of months ago - lots of lovely things, including several birds (of course).

Something New

At the weekend I went hunting through some old sketches looking for a bit of inspiration, and ended up sewing this...

... I'll let you know what it turns into!

Robins + Sunflowers

I have a very long list of designs to re-stock before the "busy" season begins again in the autumn. It seems a long way away now but hand sewing takes time and summers always fly by!

Currently in my wip box: lots of robins and sunflowers. The birds always look a bit strange until they get their eyes and beaks added...

Ornaments in Situ

Gosh I have been so busy today! Just time for a quick update on this post - pictures of the new and very sparkly Christmas display in the gift shop currently selling some of my ornaments:
As you can see, my robins have been joined by some of the designs I made for my blog tutorials - this is what happens when you show your blog to people!

PS the next ornament tutorial will be posted tomorrow...

PPS I will be listing some sets of these ornaments in my shops this coming week in case you want to buy some instead of making them yourself :)

Slightly Different Every Time

One of the many pleasures of handmade things is that when you make a batch of the "same" design each version comes out slightly different with a special charm all of its own...I notice the differences particularly when I'm making birds and other little creatures, as each one ends up with a slightly different character or personality. Well, in my mind they do at least :)

As you may have guessed, I am still bird-obsessed and making lots of robins. Some will be brooches and others ornaments, accessories for you and your Christmas tree:

Flocks of Robins

Last night I worked on a big batch of robins - well, two batches really...
One lot are still works in progress and destined to be brooches and ornaments for Etsy and elsewhere. The other set have been finished and delivered to their temporary new home, a lovely shop where they've already taken roost amongst lots of shiny Christmas things:
I'm sure it's terribly silly of me but gosh it is exciting seeing my little robins in amongst all those festive lovelies!

Finished!

The final day of Crafting 365. Wow. I know it's taken me about 5 or 6 weeks more than 365 days to complete it (breaks taken for illness, broken boilers, and other domestic disasters) and I've not posted exactly every day (mostly because of my camera and internet connection letting me down, but sometimes due to laziness and forgetfulness too!) ... but WOW it feels so great to have those 365 days under my belt! I'm really pleased with all my pictures and how much I've sewn and how the Crafting 365 group has developed ... and I think my work has really progressed since the start of the project. I'm still going to be photographing and blogging my projects, but I may miss a day here and there from now on :)

I wanted to do something special for the last day, so I picked a project I've been wanting to work on for just ages - turning my big pile of bird sketches (made in June) into actual brooches. They need their beaks and eyes and, you know, sewing together but they're starting to look like birds already...
Very typical of me to post a work in progress shot! And very very typical to be blogging about this a day late! Ah well - thanks to the delay, I've got some finished birds to show off now too as yesterday I sewed together the coal tit, greenfinch and bullfinch. Here they are along with "one I made earlier", a blue tit:
Also late: my penultimate Crafting 365 pic, a box lid filled with craftiness ...
... I started a batch of little robins and then a bit of trial and error finalising my large robin design. Got there in the end after lots of tweaking!

Watch out for the whole flock of birdies arriving in my Etsy shop over the next few weeks...

UPDATE: My robin design is now available as a sewing pattern and my other birdies are coming soon! Visit my shop to see all my printable PDF patterns

Sneak Peeks

Hello again!

I've been very busy doing lots and lots of sewing - some restocking, some finishing off of odds and ends from my wip pile, but also some new designs, hurrah!

Tomorrow my new camera and I will be getting properly aquainted but for the moment here's a couple of quick shots of some of the new stuff, including necklaces, hairbands and brooches: More news & pictures coming soon!

PS for my mum because she missed it and was most annoyed (with thanks to bombus and memake for the screenshots!) ... click to view larger:
