Style Icon: Jean Seberg

Jean Seberg went from Iowa to becoming the French New Wave's darling.  While she made movies in Hollywood as well, it is her portrayal of the cool girly-tomboy young American in her French movies that have always inspired me.
She acted from the years of 1957-1976. Her first movie was Otto Preminger's Saint Joan, where she played Joan of Arc. She died in 1979 of an overdose at the age of 40.

She made the pixie cut chic, well before Mia Farrow.

Her chicness was in her ability to shine without being over done.

Capris, chunky knit sweaters, and flats. This was her uniform.

She was truly adorable!

If you haven't seen her in the New Wave classic, Breathless (1960), you simply must!

Style Icon: Sophia Loren

Sophia is a true bombshell, in the classic sense of the word. She's most known for her curves and those eyes but she also has sense of style that enhanced her god-given features.

Born Sofia Scicolone in Italy in 1934, she started her career at the age of 14 when she entered a beauty pageant. She didn't win, but it did lead to acting lessons. She got bit parts here and there until the 1950's when she signed a 5 picture contract with Paramount that launched her international career. She then changed her name to Sophia Loren.
She was the first woman to win a Best Actress Oscar in a foreign language film for the film Two Women in 1962.

Here she is with Clark Gable in It Started in Naples (1959).

"There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age." - Sophia Loren

Style Icon: Carole Lombard

Carole Lombard is a true style icon. She could pull off casual looks just as well as complete silver screen glamour. A natural beauty, best known for her screwball comedies of the 1930s, she is still an inspiration.

A young Carole (born Jane Alice Peters) in the 1920's. Those eyes were made for black and white films.

Super stylish. I love this outfit.

Stunning Old Hollywood glamour. You can see why she was the highest paid actress in her time.

She is known for saying: “I’ve lived by a man’s code designed to fit a man’s world, yet at the same time I never forget that a woman’s first job is to choose the right shade of lipstick.”

The love's of their lives. I can't imagine a better looking couple!
Clark Gable- swoon!

Carole was tragically killed in a plane crash with her Mother in 1942 at the age of 33. Her and Clark were only married for 3 years. So sad.

Her style inspiration and wonderful films will always live on.

On My Wish List: Boudoir Slippers

I really love the old hollywood glamour of boudoir slippers with a slight heel.

With a rosette, feathers, or tulle pouf- these are a feminine necessity!

Daniel Green is one of the top vintage brands that made boudoir slippers accessible.  Do a search on Etsy for Daniel Green and you will find a big selection of delicious vintage goodies like these above from Lorins Vintage. Problem for me, no luck finding a size 10! These are a size 8, the closest to my size I've seen while vintage hunting. 3/16/2014 Edit: Lorin is now offering Bobbins And Bombshell readers 15% off her shop; Lorins Vintage, until the end of May 2014! Use coupon code BobbinsBombshells15.
So naturally, I was over the moon when What Katie Did announced that they are now selling these beauties above! Made by none other than Miss L-Fire! In retro peach or jet black, I can't wait to get my hands on or rather feet in these! What color should I get?

Full Disclosure- Bobbins And Bombshells is an affiliate of WKD. Items promoted are not gifted and are truly on my wish list.

Style Icon: Lauren Bacall

When I think of Lauren Bacall's style, classic American sportswear comes to mind. Lauren epitomized cool casual glamour, and still does to this day. She was never an over the top sex kitten and that is what makes her style still wearable, even today.

Let's have a look at some of her early shots from when she modeled for Harpers Bazaar, mostly under Louise Dahl-Wolfe's lens in the 1940's. She was a teenager trying to get a break on Broadway and was absolutely stunning.

Her confident look led her to Hollywood where she stunned audiences and Humphrey Bogart alike. This still is from the 1945 film To Have and Have Not where she met Bogart the love of her life at the age of 19. This dress is one of the most iconic dresses in Hollywood history by costume designer Milo Anderson.

Style Icon: Ava Gardner

Ava Gardner, most known for her role in The Killers (1946) was one of MGM's most beautiful stars. Not only was she gorgeous, she was stylish as well. She could range from swim suit pin-up to femme fatale to girl next door. It was not easy to narrow down photos for this post.

Stunning pin-up looks.

I want those sunglasses!

Classic!

So stylish!

Ava Gardner (1922-1990) lived a tremendous life from a childhood in the rural South to becoming on of the Hollywood greats. She starred in such films as The Killers, Mogambo, The Barefoot Contessa, and The Snows of Kilimanjaro to name a few. She was married and divorced three times, Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and the love of her life Frank Sinatra. She also had relationships with Ernest Hemingway and Spanish bullfighter, Luis Manuel Dominguin. She died in her London home from pneumonia at the age of 67.
