to the women
This Saturday will be the semi-annual Women's Conference of our church, where leaders (mostly women) speak specifically to girls and women. I look forward to it every six months. To get ready, I figured that I had better review what was said last time. As I reread the talks that were given last September, Bonnie L. Oscarson's talk, Rise Up in Strength, Sisters in Zion, really caught my attention.
Sister Oscarson talked about the challenges women face these days. To counteract the influence of the world around us, she said, "We need women who have a bedrock understanding of the doctrine of Christ and who will use that understanding to teach and help raise a sin-resistant generation. We need women who can detect deception in all of its forms. We need women who know how to access the power that God makes available to covenant keepers and who express their beliefs with confidence and charity. We need women who have the courage and vision of our Mother Eve."
She continued, "It will take concerted effort to be converted and to keep our covenants. To do so, we need to be girls and women who study the essential doctrines of the gospel and have an unshakable testimony of their truthfulness."
She suggested three areas that she believes are foundational to strong testimonies: "First, we need to acknowledge the centrality of God our Eternal Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, to our faith and salvation. . . Second, we need to understand the need for the restoration of the doctrine, organization, and keys of authority in these latter days. . . And third, we need to study and understand temple ordinances and covenants."
These truths have buoyed me time and time again. Through prayer, scripture study, and consistent temple attendance, I have gained a testimony of them. But that doesn't mean I can stop there. Like Sister Oscarson said, it requires a "concerted effort", which means constant and focused.
Finally, Sister Oscarson shared some very applicable and common sense advice when it comes to teaching our children. She said, "I worry that we live in such an atmosphere of avoiding offense that we sometimes altogether avoid teaching correct principles. We fail to teach our young women that preparing to be a mother is of utmost importance because we don't want to offend those who aren't married or those who can't have children or to be seen as stifling future choices. On the other hand, we may also fail to emphasize the importance of education because we don't want to send the message that it is more important than marriage. We avoid declaring that our Heavenly Father defines marriage as being between a man and woman because we don't want to offend those who experience same-sex attraction. And we may find it uncomfortable to discuss gender issues or healthy sexuality.
"Certainly, sisters, we need to use sensitivity, but let us also use our common sense and our understanding of the plan of salvation to be bold and straightforward when it comes to teaching our children and youth the essential gospel principles they must understand to navigate the wold in which they live. If we don't teach our children and youth true doctrine--and teach it clearly--the world will teach them Satan's lies."
What a good push to try harder and be better! It was just what I needed to hear at the start of this new week.
Anyone can watch the Women's Conference, by the way. It will be broadcast live at lds.org on Saturday, March 25 at 6:00pm Mountain Daylight Time, but will be available to view anytime after that.

happy weekend
We have the eleven o'clock time slot at church this year, which makes walking to church much more appealing than the eight thirty slot. Plus the weather has been really fantastic. I love January. I hope it never ends.
Here's something exciting: Dandee is back to blogging! I have loved her blog for years and I am so happy that she is writing there again. I know blogging isn't as popular as it once was, but I will love it forever and ever.
I keep thinking I am going to get back on my no added sugar routine, but I have had the hardest time since the new year started. But! Every day is a new day and a fresh start and maybe today is the day. (But it's probably not.)
I've been working on lots of sewing projects lately, which means I have been watching quite a few shows. I made it through all of the seasons of the Great British Sewing Bee, and now I'm half way through Victoria. Great Britain makes the best tv. That's all there is to it.
Something I'm looking forward to this weekend: My sister is flying in to town and then we're driving to California together to see our other sister who is visiting there for a few days. Hooray!
I hope you have a fun weekend!

friends
Sometimes I can go days without seeing anyone except my little family, and that's ok. But sometimes it's nice to get out of my house, too. Today was one of those days. It started with a visit to a friend in my neighborhood, where I hopefully lightened her load a little by doing her dishes and straightening her kitchen. Then I ran into a friend at the grocery store, a friend I've been meaning to call for days but hadn't yet. We visited for a minute and I admired her new teeth. And then I spent some time with my good friend, Beth, and her perfect little twin babies. And when I got home, there was a sweet note in the mail from Ellen Patton, friend to the world.
I am thankful for friends, for their kindness and sincerity, and for the brightness they add to my life. I have always admired my older sister, Leslie, who calls everyone she meets a friend. I think the country could use a little bit of that right now, don't you think, friend?

happy weekend
Happy weekend, indeed! My sister, Leslie, is in town! My parents leave today, but Leslie will be here all weekend. We don't have any plans (except attending Mabel's concert and a vintage boutique market in my neighborhood on Saturday - if you're local, check it out!), but I'm sure we'll have a good time.
Are your trees up? Your advent calendars begun? We baked our first batch of gingerbread men yesterday and then ate them for dinner. I make this recipe every year. They are my favorite. Be sure to smear them in cream cheese frosting and chocolate chips. It's the only way to go.
Have a merry weekend!

my sister's birth story
My little sister, Julianne, had her birth story featured on Design Mom yesterday. It is definitely worth a read. I am so proud of the work she is doing in the world. Good job, Jooj!

Benjamin
He's here! He's here! Benjamin Peter was born last Friday evening to my little sister, Julianne, and her dear husband, Toni. He is chubby and perfect, and already adored by so many. Hooray!
Baby steps until July when I can squeeze him.

naps and overdue babies, and some nice weather, too
I realized this week that my life was seriously lacking in naps. I used to be really good at napping, but somewhere along the way, I started skipping them and putzing around the house, or sewing instead. That was a mistake. I am a much happier, more productive person when I take a little nap. So I've resumed them, when I can, and I feel fantastic. Turns out I wasn't hungry or busy or overwhelmed. I was just tired.
Other exciting news: It's going to be nice this weekend! Not too hot. Chilly, even. Oh, I can't tell you how much I appreciate nice weather after a few days of summer-like heat. I have big plans to spend all of Saturday outside.
My entire family is on pins and needles right now, waiting for my little sister to give birth to her first baby. He is overdue and we are anxious. Plus, she is so very far away (she lives in England), so we feel extra concerned, I think. Come on baby Weis! We are ready for you!
I hope it's going to be nice wherever you are this weekend, too. Cheers!

blossoms and babies
Almost as soon as the wisteria blossoms appear, they start to drop their petals. They don't last nearly long enough, but that makes them even more special, I think. I spent lots of time outside admiring them this week. I even cleaned up the flower bed beneath them. It was in desperate need, and now it is nice and tidy and hopefully I won't have to touch it again for a few more years. I am more of an every-three-years-or-so gardner. I really wish it was something I enjoyed. Alas!
Have I mentioned that my little sister is having her first baby next month? I am so excited for her. We've been emailing back and forth for the past few days about baby advice. It has brought me right back to those first months when Mabel was a brand new baby. Oh, it was hard! But I know Julianne will be a much better first time mother than I ever was.
I'm curious, if your little sister was having her first baby, what would be your best piece of advice?

for thunderstorms and little sisters
Last night we went to sleep with our windows open and a thunderstorm brewing outside. It was fantastic. And when we woke up, the world was washed clean. Living in the desert really makes you appreciate any little bit of rain that falls. I am thankful for last night's storm.
Bonus gratitude for today: My little sister, Julianne. She is beautiful and generous and brilliant. (And she's expecting her first baby! Huzzah!) Happy birthday Jooj! Love you.

a full house
Last week we hosted my sister Leslie and her family from Texas, my sister Julianne and her Toni from the UK, and my parents from Utah. My sisters and I hadn't been together at the same time in longer than I could remember. It was so fun.
There were crossword puzzles to solve, Words with Friends to play, and future vacations to plan. The kids mostly kept themselves busy in the basement.
My sisters both married exceptional men who make for really fun uncles for my kids. We were so glad they could both come, and we had such a fun time with them.
The Parker women reunited!
And the men, too!
Last year, Julianne and Toni were living in Ethiopia to do research for their PHDs at Oxford. While they were in Africa, Toni and a friend started Run Africa, a UK company specializing in running themed travel in Eastern Africa. It gives runners of all levels the chance to train with some of the fastest athletes in the world, in some of the most beautiful landscapes. It sounds really special. Are you a runner? Is this something you'd be interested in? Check out their page for more info.
My dad has magical sleep powers.
Toni and Oliver share a birthday. So there were presents to open and candles to blow out and cakes to eat.
Why do we all live so far away from each other? Oh, it's so hard. They've only been gone a day, but we miss them like crazy already.

the girls' room
I shared a room with my sister, Leslie, until she left for college. It was the best thing about my childhood, and I think we are such good friends to this day because of it. I wanted that for my girls, too. For the past few years, Mabel and Oliver had been sharing a room in the basement. Now that Elliot is old enough to move downstairs with Oliver, it was time to put the girls together.
This same antique, marble-topped, cupboard sat between mine and Leslie's beds. It is my favorite piece of furniture, and I am so glad my girls get to use it.
The reading lights and bedding (except for the big white pillow cases that I made out of some old sheets) are from Ikea. The headboards are old crib parts, and the dream catchers are from pit stops between here and just about everywhere else.
This room is tiny, and it's in the basement (next door to the boys). Once we cleared out the old guest bed, I was starting to worry that two beds wouldn't fit! But they did, and somehow, magically, the wall paper and trim make the ceiling feel about 10 feet tall.
Mabel and Stella have only slept in their new room for a few nights, but I can already see a difference in their relationship - a closeness that wasn't there before. There are five years between them, and hopefully those years won't matter much anymore.

phone chats
Leslie and me, 1981
Leslie and I don't talk on the phone all that often, but I sure love it when we do. She called me this afternoon, and we had a nice chat while she waited for Audrey to get out of school in Texas and I waited for Stella and Elliot to eat their turkey sandwiches in Arizona. Hooray for phones and sisters and phone calls with sisters! I am thankful for them.

a quick trip to Dallas
Mike had a conference in Dallas last week and he brought me along. Thank
goodness for Spirit Airlines and their super cheap red eye flights from
Mesa to DFW! So while Mike was at his meetings, Leslie and I shopped (see photos a & b), went out to lunch, volunteered in Miles' class (c), and mostly just
spent lots of sisterly time together (d). It was so fun! But darn, it made the miles between us seem so very tragic.
Leaving the kids always stresses me out, even when I know that they will be in the extremely capable hands of my sisters-in-law and mother-in-law. (Thank you Cathy, Abbie, Lindsi, and Susan! We totally owe you guys big time!) But getting away for a few days with Mike was wonderful. Even if it was just a boring business trip. I sure love that guy.

Mom's Best Fall Back to School
Have you visited Mom's Best yet? It's a beautifully designed site meant to empower mothers and inspire them to be their best. Their online magazine was just released this week, featuring an article written by my brilliant little sister. Julianne highlights Healing Hands of Joy, a wonderful organization (page 66). Check it out!

a trip to Dallas
When I heard that my friends, the Nielsons, were going to be giving a fireside last week in my sister's ward in Texas, I jumped at the chance to make a quick visit. I took the red eye from Mesa to Dallas, and boy was I glad to see that pretty bed at Leslie's house when I arrived.
Leslie and I are the same in almost every way except one: shopping. She is good at it, I am not. So she spent our first afternoon together convincing me to buy things. (It really didn't take much convincing, I guess. Her mere presence was all I needed. I suppose it's good for my pocketbook that we live a thousand miles apart. But that's all those silly miles are good for, darnit!)
That night was the fireside and it was great! Stephanie and Christian are inspiring and happy people. I was glad I got to hear them speak about their faith and hear their strong testimonies. And their baby! Oh, she is darling.
Have you read Stephanie's book, Heaven is Here? What did you think? I thought it was so real, and I loved how Stephanie showed that we all have the potential to survive tragedy because we all have the same bit of the divine in us.
During my visit, I took a few pictures around Leslie's pretty house. It is a beautiful, peaceful place. Everywhere you look there is some special little detail. I even snuck a picture in front of her famous What I Wore Wednesday mirror. (I don't know about you, but I miss those posts!)
I had such a wonderful time. Leslie and her family are the best hosts. We ate lots of yummy food and spent lots of time talking and relaxing. It was just what I needed.
Hooray for sisters! And for husbands who are good at holding down the fort while mom's gone, too!

sisters
A few days ago, my sister-in-law, Lindsi, and I met at the park behind my house. We had a nice visit while our kids played in the warm autumn sun. Yesterday, I loaded Stella and Elliot up in the Grand Wagoneer to spend the morning at Ginger's house. While I was there, I chatted with Leslie on the phone for a minute. I am completely surrounded by wonderful women in my sisters, and I am so very thankful for each one of them! We all get along so well, and they are my closest friends.

Because babies don't keep.
I am a firm believer in rocking babies to sleep. I think it's good for the babies and good for the mamas, too. I am thankful for a baby who still requires lots of rocking, because he is most likely our last, and I'm not quite ready to give this habit up.
p.s. I can't read the verse at the end of this post by my sister without tearing up. It gets me every single time.

the time when I pretended to be a wedding photographer
The ceremony was inside this beautiful chapel, which is part of Toni's college at Oxford.
During the ceremony, Julianne read a poem and Toni read a scripture. She found her 100 year old dress online and it fit her perfectly. Isn't it stunning?
At the last moment, she realized that she didn't have any stockings to wear. So I lent her mine. She then had something old (her dress), something new (her shoes), something borrowed (my stockings), and something blue (the pretty velvet ribbon on her dress). Leslie, my mom, and I helped her get ready in my parents' little hotel room just down the street from the chapel.
Mr. and Mrs. Weis with my mom and dad.
some post-ceremony candids
Miles was the ring bearer in his handsome suit. The entire H* family made the trip.
The reception was held in the rector's garden. A traditional British tea was served. It was so pretty and very delicious. Scones! Clotted cream! I didn't eat nearly enough.
These two are very much in love.
My siblings were all able to come, thanks to our wonderfully supportive spouses. That's Elliott, Lincoln, Toni, Jooj, Leslie, me, and Matthew. Toni is a special guy and he fits right into our family. I am so happy to have him as my brother.
When not doing wedding things, we toured the grounds at Blenheim Palace, wandered around the little town of Woodstock, and walked all over Oxford. England is one of my favorite places to visit, and this trip was a dream. Next time, though, I'm bringing Mike and the kids.

my sister's wedding, instagram style
My beautiful little sister married her love last March at City Hall in New York City. This weekend, family and friends gathered in Oxford, England, where Julianne and Toni met, and where they will live for the next three years as they complete their doctorate programs, to celebrate their marriage.
It was fantastic.
It was fantastic.
the bride :: our weekend accommodations
Christ Church Meadow :: the happy couple
exchanging rings in the chapel at Exeter College :: Julianne's 100 year old dress
my brothers + nephew walking the streets of Woodstock :: a teeny little house I'd love to call my own
the bridge at Blenheim Palace with a classic British sky :: just another view in old Oxford
"New" college at Oxford :: a pretty wall
the Bodleian :: Christ Church Cathedral
more of Oxford :: the old library, scene of the Wedding Dinner
one of the colleges :: pretty skies on my long flight home
I left Mike and the kids at home, which made the trip easy. But traveling alone is highly overrated. I missed my little family!
Leslie and I were the unofficial wedding photographers. Stay tuned for photos from my real camera soon.
