I grew up in Prince George, BC, before graduating from the University of British Columbia with a BA in English Literature. I currently live in Vancouver with my husband and two kids, where I write to either movies on a loop or music turned up way too loud (and sometimes both at the same time).

Dream Debutante Dress -  (Bookie's Note: Love this dress! I love how flattering the black is and this design is so edgy and classy!)

Notes from a YA Debutante

I’m really excited and very flattered to be a Badass Bookie 2013 Debutante. Because if you know me in real life, the words “debutante” and “Elsie” and “Chapman” do not really go together. I own t-shirts with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and the tiger from The Hangover printed on them; flip flops are a staple, even in the rain. So how could I pass up Lisa’s invite to participate? Only in this post can I dream about wearing a dress this short with high heels in which I can actually walk. Plus, the pockets won me over. And origami-inspired pleating! The elegance of that added touch almost makes up for the questionable (for me) length.

Now here’s my list of weird and random facts about me. Lisa, thank you so much for asking me to be a part of the 2013 Debutantes! (Bookie's Note: The pleasure is all mine!)

1. My favourite candy is probably black licorice. But it has to be stale, so I leave the bag open for a few days before eating. Often all in one sitting, I have to admit.

2. During my first year of university, our dorm floor decided we’d all go as Grecians to the Halloween dance. I found out the hard way that wearing just a bed sheet tied into a toga without any additional coverage on top underneath wasn’t such a great idea.

3. I’m way more scared of ghosts and demonic possession than break-ins or muggings.

4. I’m not physically capable of wearing pants with elastic waistbands. So all I own are jeans with hard closures and pants with drawstrings.

5. The first time I brought my then-boyfriend-now-husband up north to my hometown for Christmas, he couldn’t figure out why his nose felt so funny as soon as we were outdoors. I took great joy in telling him he was experiencing the sensation of having his nose hairs literally freeze.

6. I can’t swim. I can barely drive. I also have zero sense of direction (I still get lost in my own neighbourhood, and I’ve lived here for ten years.). Which means I would more than likely be the first to be eliminated in any reality show.

7. When I get stressed out or need a break from writing or editing, I make gifs and gifsets for my tumblr. My husband has seen the state of my folders on my laptop. He says I might have a problem.

8. I love jrock and have a thing for bishounen.

9. I once found living worms in the pistachios that I was eating. Those particular nuts been ruined for me forever, in nearly every way, shape, and form.

10. My favourite donut is the Honey Cruller from Tim Horton’s, followed closely by Long Johns, Sour Cream Glazed, Apple Fritters, Chocolate Glazed, Double Chocolate, Jelly-Filled (any flavour), Old Fashion Glazed, and Honey Dip. As you can tell, I really miss eating wheat sometimes!

Bookie's Note: There you have it! Our very first debutante of 2013! Elsie, I love red licorice but I can't stand black licorice, it's too bitter for me! I'm not much of a pants person in general, I much prefer to wear skirts and dresses 365 days a year! I wish I knew what jrock and bishounen is but I really don't - is it an american thing?

Make sure to come back tomorrow for the second half of Elsie's feature! We have some juicy secrets lined up and a fantastic giveaway!

  1. I LOVE this series!

I too love licorice and I love how Elsie seems so much fun - and that she's scared of ghosts:)

  2. LOL Lisa... jrock = Japan Rock just as kpop is Korean Pop. And bioshounen is japanese for 'beautiful boy' but I'm not sure about Elsie's context lol - maybe a band?

    I KNOW ELSIE NOW!

  4. Love this dress! I like the asymmetrical feel of it. Also, I learned so much about Elsie from this! Though I'm not a fan of black licorice and somehow stale licorice sounds so much worse...

And that dress is really cute!

I actually have no idea how you can have stale licorice or what that tastes like - I hate black licorice :( but I love all the other coloured ones like mango and raspberry!

  9. WAIT FOR A SECOND I THOUGHT THAT WAS YOU!!! I love that dress!!! I want it too. Black is definitely a great color for any woman (actually, guys look great in black too!).

I can't swim either! This is nothing about which to be excited, but I always feel like I'm alone when it comes to not knowing how to swim. But I'm a great driver.

YOUR POOR HUSBAND. I'm sorry, but I do NOT want to marry/live with any how lives farther north than Maryland. I like where I am, but I guess I'm willing to go south. Less snow. But then, there are things like tornadoes and hurricanes... not sure which is worse.

    Thanks for the interview! <3

  14. Is the "no sense of direction" an author thing? Because I'm terrible too, Elsie. I just can't seem to pay attention to little things...like how to get from point A to point B. My mind is always spilling over with book stuff and I've got nothing left. Nothing, I tell you!

  17. That dress is awesome!! Also, I totally love black liquorice of course I don't prefer mine stale. I go to Trader Joe's and buy the big tubs of the bite sized ones. Now I am a bit afraid of pistachios. Can't wait to read Dualed!!

  20. Finally able to get over here and see all the great debuts so far! I love your list Elsie. Not a black licorice fan myself, but I also prefer certains candies when they're stale. :)

  21. Cute! And I love the dress! The pockets are totally what sold me, too :) And I'd hate to have live worms in my pistachios. >.<

  22. I love the dress! It's so classy and looks comfortable.
And that addiction to black licorice.. I swear I need to try that someday. I've been kept in the dark for so long! x

  23. I'm so with you on not being able to walk in high heels, not being able to drive and getting lost. I'm always lost wherever I am. I pass on black licorice though, even if it's not staled. So not a fan of licorice no matter the flavor.

Dualed sounds like a great dystopian.

  24. Haha, Agree with you about being scared of demonic possessions more than break-ins.. they freak me out!

  25. Worms in pistacchios! That is terrible. I LOVE those little nuts, that would ruin me! I once found maggots in dried apricots and it was terrible but I dont love them like I do pistacchios.

  26. I'm more of a red licorice person myself, but I'm with you on the eating it stale. Yum : ) Thanks for sharing so many fun facts with us!

  27. Gorgeous dress!! And I hope you know Swedish licorice, tastes great fresh and stale :)

  28. Awesome first debutante of the year! Kick butt dress. I don't do dresses a lot, but I think I could dig a dress with pockets. I loved your list, but I have nothing funny to say. You were funny enough, and I can't compete. Won't try. You have a fan if you ever want to give it a go as a comedian. I do have one thing to say. I am a southern gal, always have been. My husband is from up North. Tell your husband that I feel his frozen nose hair pain. It sucks. Luckily, this Christmas was a southern ones. I still have all of my nose hairs!
