Clay Sculptures :: student style

Bella's Garden Mountain
It never ceases to amaze me what my students can do. In January our gallery had six new sculptures by Megan Bogonovich on display.

Kaitlyn's Peace Mountain
My students love her work (as do millions of others...) and have been captivated by them each time they come into class.

Jake's "impossible par 3 Mountain"
So, I had a hair brained idea sometime that month that perhaps we could try smaller versions of Megan's complex clay sculptures. Knowing full well that nothing in clay or sculpture can always be 100% successful first time out of the box.

Willow's pigpile Mountain
This week after much working, four of the students ages 10 - 15 completed their "mountains" as we grew to call them. They measure about 14 inches tall each. I will let the photos do the talking. They are really something!
Happy Friday all!

artstreamstudios art classes

bella, inside our gallery classrooms making a mountain
Hello all! Happy Monday!
I thought I would just do a few installments of what is going on in our classes here at artstream. Each Monday I have hosted for 13 years now, homeschooling art classes. My teen classes are creating some magnificent sculptures a la Megan Bogonovich style. So cool. They have all been inspired by the fabulous porcelain and ceramic sculptures which have been part of our To Rome to Roam exhibit. I thought hmmmm, why not? Why not indeed! The teens and some of the other 'tween classes have been making magnificent mountains out of mole hills of clay. When they are finished I will be sure to post the end results here. Until now - a little "in process" piece by 14 yr old Bella.

Paper Mache - Little Projects Tutorial

first you tape together two recycled styrofoam cups and then add a third for the top!

then you mix up the goo (white glue and water) and dip your paper strips in!

you paint it pretty colors with acrylic paint and then add visual texture with bubble wrap - POP!

pick some stray branches up outside and take small tissue squares and wad them up.
dip them into a little white glue and press them onto the branches!

With a couple of my younger students we made some mother's day gifts with recycled foam cups, paper mache and acrylic paint. Yesterday we made little "flowering" branches to tuck inside.
Sweet and handmade. Just the way we like it!

This week the studio has been all a-buzz with papermache, painting and general happiness in the art of creating things. I thought it would be fun to show a few of the works in process and the students just having a general fun time of it all.
Summer classes are coming up soon - we just got our new brochures in the mail today - hope to see you all soon!

Whimsical vessels workshop

Better light today and a few little glimpses at the work in progress from the Saturday workshop with Megan Bogonovich. We had so much fun.
This footed egg dish and butterdish are just bone dry now and waiting for three layers of wiped on underglaze for a super magnificent texture popping color.
More workshops to come on Saturdays in April and May by Megan Bogonovich and some jewelry workshops in April and May by Makayla Brown.

Making hand puppets

chloe's puppet, originally uploaded by artstreamstudios.
My children's classes are busy finishing up their claymation videos and thinking about what they would like to try next. Some of the groups will be making puppets.
This is exciting to me - every time they choose this - as I love to make puppets. Some will be large scale, other classes will make hand puppets like the one above.
8 years ago daughter Chloe made this little gem. She took a pair of her old ballet tights and cut them up to form the head. She used fleece for the "coat and scarf" and felt for the hands. Being the glitterglam she is she added the huge sequins for buttons. Her simple drawing on the stocking head was done with a sharpie -(my favorite part!) and the hair was some repurposed fake fur handed over to us by a friend.

As she was just starting to sew at the time, we used a combination of hot glue and stitching for the construction. All in all it stands as one of my favorite pieces of her artwork ...(so far)...
