Art Lainey

We are so excited to be working with Paula Stokes and Harper Collins on the release day launch of Paula's young adult contemporary romance!! This book is so much fun--and Paula has shared a really great excerpt from it! Check it out below!!

Excerpt:

GOT HEART? The music pitches and swells, violin and guitars, drumbeats and thudding bass. As I sway back and forth in front of the stage, it feels like being in the eye of a tornado, where it’s calm, but everything is going crazy whirling around me. I can’t stop looking at Micah, at the way the lights reflect off his mohawk, at the way he’s completely lost in the storm of overlapping chords. I see every part of him, tiny pieces I never knew existed. The slight bend in his nose, the wedge-shaped scar on his right temple, the outline of his bicep hiding beneath the pyramid tattoo. His lips part, just barely, when he exhales. As I imagine the invisible mist of his breath hanging in the air, I inch closer to him. Here, in the strange blue light, while the bass pulses and pounds, all I can think about is touching him. Our fingertips brush. A shockwave courses through me. I want to grab him and pull him into my calm spot, closing my eyes and kissing him while the world spins topsy-turvy around us. My thoughts feel hot inside my head, like they should be radiating a laser beam across the club, but Micah’s eyes are still closed, his body loose. He’s oblivious to the fact I’m thinking about kissing him. He has no idea my eyes are skimming their way down the lines of his body. His cheekbones. His beard stubble. The ridge of muscle connecting his jaw to the center of his chest. The faintest trace of sweat glistens where his neck meets his right shoulder. I want to touch my lips to it. This is crazy. It’s Micah. I don’t like Micah. He doesn’t like me. We have about as much in common as, well, nothing. I sneak another glimpse at him. He’s still completely entranced by the song. He’s still completely kissable. It has to be the beer, or the music, the violins and guitars and electronic pulsing, the whole otherworldly quality to this song. Or maybe it’s just because I’m not myself here, and I don’t have to obey the rules of Lainey.

GOT GAME? I sub back into the game a few minutes later and stay through the end of the half. It’s still 1-0. The Yellow Jackets tie it up on a breakaway goal in the second half. At this point I’m running from one end of the field to the other, playing more defense than any striker forward ought to be playing. I can’t help it. It feels so good to be in the game. Matt Clifton saves a shot on goal and drop-kicks the ball in my direction. I dribble up field, out maneuvering two of the other team’s defenders. I pass the ball to Jason who sends it across to our right wing forward. The defense kicks the ball out of bounds and we get a corner kick. Jason goes to take it. I position myself in front of the goal, dancing back and forth as I vie for position with one of the Yellow Jacket fullbacks. It’s a beautiful kick—high and strong, and it’s coming right at me. The other players, the shouting, the movement, they all fade into the background as I keep my eyes locked on the ball. Angling my body just slightly, I propel all five feet and eight inches of myself into the air at exactly the right moment—I think, I hope—and the crown of my head connects squarely with the ball. The players around me all turn to watch as it arcs through the air…

GET LAINEY! I flip on the radio as soon as Leo fires up the engine. I hit the tuning arrow up until it lands on the station Micah put on for the ride home from the baseball game. Leo looks over at me. “I didn’t know you liked this kind of music,” he says. Me neither, but I do. Kind of, anyway. “I’ve been branching out. Anything gets old if you listen to it twenty-four seven, you know?” “I hear you. I like new stuff too.” I don’t answer. If you asked me whether I was the type of person who liked trying new things or preferred sticking with what was familiar, I would have told you I’m the second girl. The if –it-aint-broke-don’t-fix-it girl. I also would have told you plays were lame. It suddenly occurs to me that I don’t seem to know very much about…me. It’s a weird feeling, like maybe a stranger is inhabiting my body. Or maybe a stranger was, and I kicked her out.

Title: Bring Me Back
Author: Karen Booth
Pages: 284
Published: 01.20.13
Goodreads Rating: 3.89
My Rating: 5.0

Synopsis:

Music critic Claire Abby is a single mom dreading her daughter’s departure for college and worried that turning forty will leave her career running on fumes. She’s floored when she lands a Rolling Stone cover story on 80s British rock legend Christopher Penman. She spent her teenage years fantasizing he was her boyfriend.

In person, Christopher is everything Claire feared he’d be—charming, witty and unwilling to address the rumors he’s dodged for a decade. Still, she contains her adolescent fantasies and manages to earn his trust, unearthing the truth and the devastating secret behind it. His blockbuster story is her first priority when she returns home, a nearly impossible task when Christopher starts calling and flirting. She knows she should maintain a professional distance. She knows she should focus on the story. She knows it would be best to simply walk away. But how can she say “no” to the man she could never forget?

My Review:

Every girl has that celebrity that they were in love with as a child or a teenager. I'm sure you all remember yours, because I definitely remember mine. I'm not ashamed to admit that it was Justin Timberlake ! But for our main character Claire, hers was Christopher Penman. She dreamed of him, lusted after him and even imagined marrying him as  teenage. Fast forward about 2o years and Claire still can't help but recall those feelings. As a single mom of a teenage girl, Claire receives the job of a life-time when she gets hired to do an exclusive interview with none other than Chris Penman. This interview means so much more to Claire than just the opportunity to meet her favorite rock star, but it is also the biggest opportunity for Claire as a free-lane writer. Determined to make the most of the interview she asks some hard hitting questions. But not only is Chris ready, he has a plan of this own. This meeting ends up becoming more than Claire had ever expected as sparks start to fly and not just from her.

I don't know where to even being with this book, but I think I will start off with the two main characters. First of all can I just say how happy I was to read a story about characters that were older than most books. Both Claire and Chris are in their early 40s and the challenges they face are so different than the usual ones we see in books and it was completely enjoyable. Another thing that I enjoyed about this book was the how their relationship started. Unlike other books, we actually see Claire and Chris has an actual old school, tradition courtship. They start a friendship with texts and phone calls, until they are able to spend more time together. And even when they do spend time together they take things nice and slow.

Another aspect of this book that I really enjoyed about this book was the humor. Karen Booth has the ability to write some amazingly funny diaglogue. There was this portion where Claire asks Chris to say  some "cute british things" for her. But I have to admit that some of these lines I did not even understand, so I had to ask my British Sister Charlotte. I knew they were going to be embarrassing, but luckily she did not make too much fun of me when I asked her what they meant. But more than just having a ton of humor, there was just something about the way Karen writes that kept me smiling through out the entire book. I could not put this book down, and actually spend a whole day reading this book when I should have been reviewing for my nursing boards which are next week : D All in all LOVED THIS Book and it is my first 5-star rating of the 2014!

Title: Back Forever
Series: Sequel to Bring Me Back
Author: Karen Booth
Pages: 282
Published: 02.17.14
Goodreads Rating: 4.23
My Rating: 4.5

Synopsis:

Back together after a painful breakup, Christopher Penman and Claire Abby are looking only to their future. Christopher’s band is making a run at it after a long hiatus. Claire lands a magazine job she never dreamed she could get. Only a ring on Claire’s finger and a baby on the way could make things more complete, and Chris is determined they’ll have everything they ever wanted.
But when Claire’s dad starts behaving strangely, and her teenage daughter feels left out, Chris and Claire’s picture-perfect plans begin to unravel. A piece of devastating news casts doubt on whether they’ll have the life they envisioned. Through everything fate throws at them, Chris and Claire must find the good and hold on to it with both hands. They will have it all as long as they have each other, forever.

My Review:

Even though there is still plenty of humor in this book, I just have to say that there were specific scenes in this book that had me sobbing like a baby! We see Claire and Chris taking some rather large steps in this book. They are planning a wedding, buying and remodeling a new house and both have their careers starting to take off. Claire has been offered an amazing opportunity to become an Entertainment Editor for up and comping magazine where as Chris' band is considering getting back together for some shows and  a new album. They are trying to juggle it all and still be there for Samantha and Claire's father Richard whose health is starting to deteriorate. Will they both be able to have it all or will they start having to make sacrifices?

I'm trying to not put too many spoilers in this review so there is a big subject matter that I am leaving out and boy is it one that is completely heart warming. I am a sucker for how Chris reacts to his specific aspect of the story and made me fall in love with him so much more.

It was wonderful and sometimes hard seeing Claire and Chris deal with the struggles they encounter in this book, but they get through it together and remain each others rocks throughout the entire process. Even though so many different obstacles are thrown at them, their relationship stayed constant and strong and it was refreshing to see in this book.

Another aspect of this second book in particular that I enjoyed, but was seeing the budding relationship between Richard (Claire's Dad) and Chris. Chris having lost his father at a very young age starts developing a beautiful and loving relationship with Richard. Even as Richard's health starts getting worse and worse, Chris is patient and loving and still included Richard in everything. It was nice to see this budding father son relationship and just remembering some of the scenes is bringing tears to my eyes.

There are certain books that are absolutely great but end in a way where there are questions left answered and story lines that are never wrapped up, but this is not one of those books. I ended BACK FOREVER, feeling full filled and complete and with a huge grin on my face. These are characters that stay with you, and a story which I will sure to be re-reading many times!

Thank you to Karen Booth for an amazing story and for putting up with my endless Tweets :) I will definitely be picking up more books from her in the future!

Book Blitz - Sex Love Repeat+ Except +GIVEAWAY

                                                                Title: Sex.Love.Repeat
 Author: Alessandra Torre
Release date: December 1st, 2013
 Genre: Erotic Romance
 Tour: Irresistible Reads Book Tours

Book Description:
I love two men. I screw two men. I am in a relationship with them both, and they are both aware there is another. That is all they need to know, that is all I let them know. They don’t need to know a name; they don’t need to know anything, but that they are not alone in my heart.

They have accepted the situation. Stewart, because his life is too busy for the sort of obligations that are required in a relationship. Paul, because he loves me too much to tell me no. And because my sexual appetite is such that one man has trouble keeping up.

So we exist, two parallel relationships, each running their own course, with no need for intersection or conflict. It works for us, for them, and for me. I don’t expect it to be a long-term situation. I know there is an expiration date on the easy perfection of our lives.

I should have paid more attention, should have looked around and noticed the woman who watched it all. She sat in the background and waited, tried to figure me out. Saw my two relationships, the love between us, and the moment that it all fell apart.

She hates me.
I don’t even know she exists.
She loves them. I love them.
And they love me.
EVERYTHING else hangs in the balance

EXCERPT:
My men are so different, yet similar in so many ways.

Their eyes, a similar tint of blue, yet Paul’s smiles at me with carefree abandonment and Stewart’s pierces my heart with its dark intensity.

Their bodies. Paul’s naturally muscular, his arms developed from hours of surfboard paddling, his abs ripped from balancing on a board, his thighs and calves strong from jumping, balancing, and kicking through currents. Stewart’s body, attacked like everything else in his life, with fierce devotion, aggression worked out with miles on a treadmill, weight-lifting, sit-ups, pull-ups, and calisthenics.

Their love. Paul loves me with unconditional warmth, his affection public and obvious, his arms pulling me into his warmth, his mouth littering my body with frequent kisses. Stewart loves me with a tiger’s intensity, his need taking my breath away, his confidence in our relationship strong enough to not be bothered by the presence of another man. He stares into my soul as if he owns it, and shows his love with money, sex, and rare moments of time.

Tonight is one of those rare moments. I have his attention, his cell phone is away, and he is staring at me as if I contain everything needed to make his world whole. I step forward, towards his seated form, the dress hugging my form to perfection. He sits up in the chair, spreading his knees and patting his thigh, indicating where he wants me. I sit sideways on his thigh, my eyes held by his, his hand stealing up and running lightly along my bare back. “You are breathtaking.” His voice gruff, he leans forward and places a light kiss on my neck. “And you smell incredible.”

“Thank you. You clean up pretty well yourself.” And he does. In a suit that no doubt costs more than my dress, he looks every bit the successful executive that he is. Short, orderly hair. Clean-shaved chin. Those intense eyes staring out of a strong face. “Is the car here?”

“It’s downstairs. But it can wait.” He runs a hand up my knee, sliding the material of the cocktail dress up.

I wait, my breath becoming shallow, my concentration focused on the path of his fingers, as they travel higher, taking their time, the tickle of rough skin against soft flesh. He leans over, brushing a quick kiss over my lips and then moves lower, soft kisses making the path down the line of my jaw, whisper soft against my neck, and deepening in touch when they reach my collarbone. His hand caresses my thigh, the brush of his thumb moving higher up my thigh until it is just breaths from my sex. I groan, sliding my hips forward, but his hand stops me, gripping my thigh and holding me still. “Not yet. Let me enjoy you for a moment.”

There is the sound of approaching footsteps, and I open my eyes to see a suited man, our driver, round the corner and stop short when we come into view. His eyes drop respectfully and he speaks softly. “Mr. Brand, I’ll be downstairs with the car when you are ready.”

Stewart mutters something unintelligible, the man taking the cue and leaving, the firm pull of the door behind him leaving us alone. Stewart’s hands push apart my legs, moving the fabric of my dress aside and leaving me bare and open to his eyes. He looks down, examining the exposed skin, his mouth curving into a smile. “No panties?” His eyes flick up to mine.

“They’re in my purse. I figured they would be useless until we got to the event.”

“That,” he says softly, his fingers teasing the edge of my lips, circling the edge of my sex in slow, tantalizing brushes, each touch closer but not yet there, “is why I love you. You know me so well.”

His eyes stare at me, dark pools of lust and want. While Paul and I talk, incessantly, often, about anything and everything, important or not, Stewart and I fuck our way through this relationship, our time often too short for anything more than physical contact. Sex is how we connect, share our feelings, emotions, and love. I stare back into his eyes, my eyelids closing slightly when he slides one confident finger over the knot of my clit, that finger effortlessly sliding down and into me, the small invasion a tease of perfection. “Look at me,” he breathes. “I want to see your eyes.”

I reopen my eyes, my mouth parting as he cups my sex, slipping a second finger in with the first, both of them working together, stimulating me in their movement, his thumb staying firm on my clit, soft pressure that moves slightly with each stroke of his fingers. He watches my eyes, sees the moment that the fire of my need hits them, sees the crescendo and burn of my arousal, adjusting the pace and pressure of his fingers in accordance with my want. I feel the curl of pleasure, growing in my belly, our eyes caught in a web of want, pulled to each other, my eyes barely noticing the sexy pull of his mouth into a smile as my breathing increases and I thrust into his hand. His other hand steals around my waist, sliding up my chest and pulling on the fabric there, tugging my neckline down till a breast is exposed, his hand gripping and tugging on it just hard enough to make me gasp.

 Book Excerpt

“Is that our door?” I say.
Who could be knocking on our door? Especially at this hour? I haven’t had a chance to give everyone our new address yet. I suppose the delivery guy could be paying us a return visit—maybe he forgot one of our dishes and we didn’t notice?—but it seems a little late for that. Maybe the walls were even thinner than we thought and one of the neighbors has come to complain. Calder’s already climbing to his feet, and he pulls me up beside him. We return to the living room together.
The pounding is growing louder, more insistent.
“Stay back,” Calder tells me. I can tell by his expression that he too is unnerved by this late-night visitor. I’m about to suggest that we ignore the knocking and hope whoever it is goes away when our unexpected guest stops pounding and starts yelling through the door.
“Come on, Calder! I know you’re in there!”
I freeze. Why is a woman screaming through our door? Why is she looking for Calder?
I glance over at him, and it appears that he’s just as shocked as I am. He’s frozen, stunned.
“Who is it?” I hiss. If she doesn’t hear us, there’s still a chance she’ll give up and go away. I steal a glance at the door, and I’m relieved to see that both the deadbolt and the chain are in place.
“Dammit!” shouts the woman. “Let me in, Calder!”
Calder is staring straight at the door, and his hands have curled into fists. He doesn’t appear to have heard my initial question, so I try again.
“Who is she?” I ask, a little louder this time. “What does she want?” Is this some angry ex-girlfriend come to bring the wrath down upon his new apartment? But that doesn’t make any sense—we’ve both had long talks about our past relationships, and I can’t think of anyone in his past who’d show up out of the blue like this.
It takes Calder a minute to turn his head toward me. When he does, he looks stricken. I swear he’s a shade paler than usual.
“It’s Louisa,” he says, his confusion clear in his voice.
Louisa? I’m certain I know that name, but it takes a moment for everything to click in my head.

No, she’s not an ex-girlfriend, but rather something much, much more complicated.
