Tomorrows Snack still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Tomorrows Snack still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
While painting outside at the wrong time of day is like constantly chasing the shadows and light and if that isn't bad enough try painting outdoors when it is overcast. 10x8 oil on canvas panel.

Faraway Gazing sunflower demo still life by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Faraway Gazing sunflower demo still life by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I decided to share my painting process with you today. Instead of painting in my studio I just set this still life up in my living room and painted as I watched TV. This is the final picture and I posted it twice just so it would post right.
 1. I start by blocking in placement with darks and light.

I moved the cup and decided to leave the frog out...
After I got the basic focus blocked in I decide to Paint in the dark background. This will change a lot as the painting progresses.
My palette starting at bottom and going left Cad yellow light, Cad red light, Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue, Pthalo Blue, Indigo Blue, Sap Green and Titanium white in the center. I know it looks a mess.

I add in the light foreground

Adding more detail to the glass and the cup also adding lighter blue on the cup. Also blurring the distant sunflower petals.
I added the petals on the table just for more yellow to tie everything in.
I now blur the edges of the pitcher to shift focus.
Now I add in the yellow flowers on the vase and complete the table cloth by dragging light whitish blue paint across and down with a palette knife leaving rough texture. I hope you enjoyed this little demo of how I approach and oil painting. This is a 10x8 oil on canvas panel.

Snail Mail still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Snail Mail still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I am loving painting from actual still life set ups. The little snail was given to me by my daughter. It is actually a salt shaker. It has a frog for the pepper shaker but I decided to leave it out for now. Again I added the cherries to bring the viewers eye back into the painting. 14x11 Oil on canvas panel. I purchased these panels from Hobby Lobby. They are triple primed and took oil quite well. I am pretty pleased with how they worked up. Hope you like this one.

Plentiful Life still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Plentiful Life still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I love painting cups and paintings of cups but to me they are very hard to paint and keep their fragile appeal. I am pretty pleased with this one and of course pears are both fun and more manageable.

On Top Of The World by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

On Top Of The World by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I have been painting quite a lot despite working a full time job. But a full time job I realize just
does not give me the satisifaction that painting does. I know I have painted a lot of apples and pears
not to mention the green vase and that little cup. My 6 year old grandson set this up for me. I did have
to move one of the pears due to the small canvas size. I am learning that you have to paint the fruit while it last which is not long enough. The tulips bit the dust pretty quickly but I did get quite a few paintings from them though.

Arranged Marriage by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Arranged Marriage by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
First of all I want to say thank you for viewing my art. Your support is so important to me.
This is going to be such a good year. I am looking forward to good things.
Arranged Marriage I have to say is one of those paintings that I really love. I named it because of the meticulous time I took to arrange it. It just seemed right. Hope you love it. As I look at this I realize that my style is changing as time goes by little by little day by day. I hope you like this change...I think I do. 10x8 oil still life on canvas panel.

Table Tango by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Table Tango by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I had been wanted something special to paint so I went shopping yesterday and bought the pears,
the tulips, some apples and peppers. I hope that I will be able to paint all of them while they last. The tulips are already looking a little wilted but I hope they at least last one more day. The chicken .....again. 10x8 oil on canvas panel, still life.

Olive Quackers by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Olive Quackers by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
Everytime we go to the thrift store my daughter is amazed at the junk I find. Like this little cup with green flowers and the little duck. These olives are starting to dry out a little but I figured I could get one more painting out of them. I painted this with a lot of greys and it was harder than it looks.

Another painting with grapes. This has been really fun so far. I sent my daughter to the store and she bought me grapes, strawberries, and melon. This might just keep me busy for a little while.
