Fenced In landscape painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Fenced In landscape painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I thought I would paint a few landscape paintings for a change and this is the latest in maybe a mini series. I worked a pit to get different shades of gray. It was interesting to use blues and greens with a touch of black. I hope you like it. 10x8 oil on canvas panel.

Violets Among Roses still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Violets Among Roses still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
Painting is so relaxing. At times I start to get uptight about it and then I make myself take a deep breath and realize that is not drudgery. I do get angry if the painting does not go like I want It to.  I bought this little creamer pitcher in Maine a couple of years ago. It is delicate and one of my favorites. This painting if a 10x8 oil on canvas panel. I painted it on Labor Day this year. I had the most trouble with the basket handle.

Tomorrows Snack still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
While painting outside at the wrong time of day is like constantly chasing the shadows and light and if that isn't bad enough try painting outdoors when it is overcast. 10x8 oil on canvas panel.

Faraway Gazing sunflower demo still life by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Faraway Gazing sunflower demo still life by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I decided to share my painting process with you today. Instead of painting in my studio I just set this still life up in my living room and painted as I watched TV. This is the final picture and I posted it twice just so it would post right.
 1. I start by blocking in placement with darks and light.

I moved the cup and decided to leave the frog out...
After I got the basic focus blocked in I decide to Paint in the dark background. This will change a lot as the painting progresses.
My palette starting at bottom and going left Cad yellow light, Cad red light, Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue, Pthalo Blue, Indigo Blue, Sap Green and Titanium white in the center. I know it looks a mess.

I add in the light foreground

Adding more detail to the glass and the cup also adding lighter blue on the cup. Also blurring the distant sunflower petals.
I added the petals on the table just for more yellow to tie everything in.
I now blur the edges of the pitcher to shift focus.
Now I add in the yellow flowers on the vase and complete the table cloth by dragging light whitish blue paint across and down with a palette knife leaving rough texture. I hope you enjoyed this little demo of how I approach and oil painting. This is a 10x8 oil on canvas panel.

Family Reunion still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Family Reunion still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
We went camping last weekend. I stopped by Walmart and bought fruit yep just to paint while I was gone. I picked up a huge bag of cherries because they looked so wonderful. Deciding I only needed a few I emptied them all out except a few. Shocked I was to find they were almost four dollars for just a handful. Crazy!!! I couldn't believe it but they did taste yummy when I finally ate them. Frantic for just one more thing I pulled some long grass and put in a vase. 10x8 oil on canvas panel.

That Little Blue Vase still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

That Little Blue Vase still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
I amazes me that sometimes life takes a chunk out of my time and I can't paint for a while and then,
I paint, and I am smiling again. I am the happiest ever and I find myself in a happy place in front of my easel. Sometimes I paint from a photo but enough can not be said about painting from a life setup still life. Love it!!!

Choices still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

Choices still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan
Of course when I paint something I never know what to name it. I just paint it and then the name just comes. Maybe not always the best one but at least something. I added the lime and the cherry just for a little fun interest. So which choice would you choose a cherry or a lime. I made this artist bear. My first and only one. It was quite a challenge. 10x8 oil on canvas panel.
