Friday Firsts (17)

The first line can make or break a reader’s interest. Just how well did the author pull you in to the story with their first sentence? To participate in this weekly book meme is extremely easy.
  • Grab the book you are currently reading and open to the first page.
  • Write down the first sentence in the first paragraph.
  • Create a blog post with this information. (Make sure to include the title and the author of the book you are using. Even an ISBN helps!)
  • Did this first sentence help draw you into the story? Why or why not?

The book I'm currently reading is Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman. I received it from LibraryThing, and I wasn't expecting that I would like it as much as I do. I thought it would be boring, but it's not at all. Here is the first sentence:

"Momma left her red satin shoes in the middle of the road."

The first sentence is pretty intriguing, and it foreshadows what will happen later on. CeeCee's mother is pretty crazy, so the sentence is pretty sad once you learn what happens to her. So far Saving CeeCee Honeycutt is really good, and I can't wait to read more.

The Unwritten Rule Contest Update and Friday Firsts (16)

**Update: My sister came home from college and helped me tweak a couple things, so they look different now but a lot better : ) The bookmarks are two-sided now, and I added another magnet winner also! To enter go to the original post here.**

The book I'm currently reading is Shadowland: Book 3 of The Immortals by Alyson Noel. I'm about a third of the way through into it already, and it's really good so far. Here is the first teeny, tiny sentence:

"Everything is energy." (Damen says this)

The first sentence makes a lot of sense if you have read any of The Immortals books. It's a little short and probably not the best first sentence. I still like it though. I loved the first one but the second one was a tad disappointing. So far Shadowland has been really good, and I hope it keeps getting better.

The book I'm currently reading is Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey. I'm more than half way through into it already, and it's alright, It's a little slow and a tad boring right now...hope it gets better. Here is the first two sentences since the first one is so small:

"I opened my eyes. My legs were bound and my head ached."

These first couple sentences are very intriguing and made me interested in reading more. After reading those two sentences, I thought something else was happening but it was totally different in the book. It is a little boring right now, but I hope to finish it tomorrow and review it too. I meant to do it today, but I passed out when I got home for three hours...oops : )

The book I'm currently reading is Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I'm about 150 pages into it already, and it's really good so far! It's pretty hard to put down. Here is the first sentence of the Prologue:

"They say that just before you die your whole life flashes before your eyes, but that's not how it happened for me."

Wow, what a great way to start off a book! It explains a lot about what the book will be like and is so intriguing, it keeps you wanting to learn more. The prologue sets off the book very nicely, and the plot is very original. I can't wait to get more into the story and find out how it ends. I will finish it this weekend and review it too because I'm going to be snowed in!

The book I'm currently reading is Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I loved the first book the Hunger Games, so I can't wait to devour this one too! Here is the first sentence:

"I clasp the flask between my hands even though the warmth from the tea has long since leached into the frozen air."

This first sentence is very nicely written, but it doesn't start off telling much about the story. It's intriguing and makes me excited to read more. The first several pages are good, so I hope it's as good as the first!

The book I'm currently reading is The Real Real by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. I'm so close to finishing, so I can't wait to find out how it ends. I should be done by tomorrow, and I'll post the review tomorrow! Here is the first sentence:

"Single file! Everyone line up on the LEFT!" Mrs. Gesop shouts to be heard over the din of students crowding into the impractically narrow hallway between the stairway and the auditorium.

Wow, that's a really long sentence; It takes up almost four lines in the book : ) It's a pretty good first sentence, and it does set up the story very nicely & is pretty intriguing. The story so far is really good and very hard to put down. Look out for my review tomorrow!

The book I'm currently reading is The Vampire Diaries: The Fury and Dark Reunion by L. J. Smith. I read the first two several weeks ago, so I can't wait to read these two. Here is the first sentence:

"Elena stepped into the clearing."

That is kind of a lame first sentence if it wasn't the third book in the series. The second book left off with a total cliffhanger, so this sentence makes sense. The show is really good, but it is very, very different from the books. I'm excited to read these sequels because so far it's a pretty good series.

The book I'm currently reading is The Hunger Games by Suzane Collins. I just started it since I just finished my last book, so I'm only about 20 pages into it. The beginning is really good so far, and I can't wait to keep reading! Here is the first sentence:

"When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold."

This a pretty good first sentence. It's intriguing, but not very informative. The next few lines explain more, so this a good first sentence. I have heard and read so many rave reviews about The Hunger Games, so I know it has to be good. I hope to finish it this weekend since I don't have swim practice at all, and it's going to be snowing!

One book I'm currently reading is Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott. I just started, so the first page is pretty much all I've read so far. I love the two books I've read previously by Elizabeth Scott and finally got this one at the library. Here is the first sentence:

"Everyone's seen my mother naked."

Wow, this is a hilarious first sentence! It totally got me attention and made me keep wanting to read on. This first sentence has to be my favorite out of all the other Friday Firsts sentences I've done. Something, Maybe sounds really good, and I can't wait to read more of the book.

The book I'm currently reading is the Van Alen Legacy by Melissa De La Cruz. I just started reading it, so I'm not vary far into it yet. I've been dying to read it and finally after being the tenth person on the hold list at the library, I got it...yay! : D I love all the Blue Bloods books and can't wait to devour this one too. This is the first sentence: (it starts off with a sort of intro of a "conversation", but I will just put the first sentence of Chapter 1)

"There had been little time to mourn."

This is an okay first sentence. If you have read the first three books and especially the third, this make sense to you but if not, it won't. Since I remember how the last book, Revelations, ended, this does draw me in and make me want to know more. Like I said above, I can't wait to this and find out how everything turns out.

The book I'm currently reading is the Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen. I'm very close to finishing my books, so expect the Along for the Ride and the Treasure Map of Boys reviews sometime this weekend. I love all of Sarah Dessen's books and so far this one hasn't disappointed at all! This is the first sentence:

"THE EMAILS ALWAYS began the same way. Hi Auden!!"

This is a decent first sentence, but could have been a tad better. It got my attention and is kind of funny. Along for the Ride of course has a female main character who falls for a boy but then kinda blows it. I really like it and really just want to know it ends.

The book I'm currently reading is the The Treasure Map of Boys by E. Lockhart. I'm not very far into it yet, but I love the two other books. They are just so hilarious to read! This is the first sentence, but really it's a poem:

"Ruby,
In laboratories dim
We bend to Feischman's whim
And suffer twice a week
Horrors terrible to speak..."

Haha this is a kind of weird way to start a book; since the other two are like this too, I expect that kind of thing. The poem is pretty funny and weird. It is about a boy asking Ruby (the main character) to be his laboratory partner, so he writes a poem to her. I can't wait to read this to see what other crazy things will happen!

The book I'm currently reading is the Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder. I just started reading it last night, so I'm not very far into it yet. This is the first sentence:

"Locked in darkness that surrounded me like a coffin, there was nothing to distract me from my memories."

This is a really great first sentence! It makes what to keep reading to find out what's going to happen. The back summary makes the book sound so amazing, so I can't wait read more. I couldn't imagine being put in a jail cell awaiting my death. It would be so horrible and like the first sentence says, I wouldn't be able to stop thinking back on all my memories. I'm really surprised I read and reviewed 3 (4 soon) books this week. Usually, I only read and review one book a week, so this week was pretty good : D

The book I'm currently reading is the Liar by Justine Larbalestier. I'm about half way through so I should have my review pretty soon. This is the first sentence:

"I was born with a light covering of fur."

Haha wow that is a really funny but weird first sentence. It does really make sense though as the first sentence because it's a good starting point to Micah's story. It's really intriguing and it makes you want to know what the story is all about. The story is pretty interesting and is not like anything else I've ever read. The cover (which is so great!) had some controversy because the main character is a black female and on the cover the girl was white. I love the new cover, and think it's a lot better than the old one. See the covers below!

The book I'm currently reading is the Running on the Cracks by Julia Donaldson and I'm almost done so expect this review very soon. This is the first sentence:

"This is the bit I've planned."

Wow that explains practically nothing about the book. It is a very lame first sentence!  I mean is that even a good sentence, you start off confusing because you have no idea what's going on.  Plus it's by a British author, so half the time I don't even know what some of the words mean. The book is pretty boring, so I can't wait to just finish it and start something good. Sorry for my rambling rant : )

The book I'm currently reading is the Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han. This is the first sentence:

"We'd been driving for about seven thousand years."

In my opinion, this is not a great first sentence. It doesn't really explain much about the book, and it's just basically complaining. The next couple lines aren't the greatest either. The first line could have been a lot better, but it doesn't really matter that much because it isn't going to be a classic story people will remember So far, I like the story and hope to finish it soon.

Friday Firsts! (1)

Friday Firsts is a new meme I came across hosted by Well-Read Reviews, and it seems pretty fun!
(Make sure to include the title & author of the book you are using. Even an ISBN helps!)
  • Did this first sentence help draw you into the story? Why or why not?
The book I'm currently reading is the Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and this is the first sentence:

"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie."

This first sentence is alright and notice that she said her name was Salmon; the past tense is a key point. It did make me want to know more about the girl and at first I thought her first name was Salmon, then I realized it was her last name. I think it should've started with her name was Susie, and then go on to the second sentence which is really good but sad. This is the second sentence:

"I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973."

Go HERE to see Well-Read Reviews's post and post your link.
