The Anniversary Clock

*I wrote this entry in early 2009, but I think I have never post it here before...

This is the latest member of the household; an Anniversary Clock, also known as Dome clock or 400-Day clock. Obviously it has a glass dome covering the movement, hence the name. During the old days, it used to be given as a gift during birthdays or weddings. Usually this kind of clock can work for a year or so just only with one winding, so people normally wind it to mark their anniversary. This is what amazed me rather than the look.

I believe this was made circa 1950's. It is marked J. Kaiser G.M B.H, Villingen, Germany. This maker is not really as popular or most sought after in terms of Anniversary Clock as compared to Kundo, Schatz and some other makers. Almost all of the fine clock movements and their maker have their roots from Germany. Watching the four-ball pendulum rotating, transmitting the energy to the spring where it's hanging from and thus moving the fork to push the arbor pin that makes the hand move is really amazing.

When I received the clock, the brass base were covered with film of stain and dark. I used autosol to polish it up, but some spots just too deep to eliminate all over. It could be in the hands of people who don't really care about it before this. Nevertheless, the glass dome is in mint condition, and the dial together with the brass showing sign of aging added up on the patina of this antique. The two pillars that hold up the movement plates were decorated with vineleaves motives.

Currently the clock is ticking and moving just fine. It is still undergoing some adjustment to regulate the beat and ensuring it keeps the time by adjusting the pendulum balls. This needs some patience, and it will continue to serve the master for many years to come with a bit of tender, love and care.

I am really amused by these mechanical clock movement from the older ages and the precision of early days clock maker is also a wonder. Next time I will write about the other clocks in my possession.

Towards Healthy Eating

When we talk about healthy eating, it involves many influencing and contributing factors. However, here I will outline three important factors and briefly discuss about them.

Three important things you need to change or improve when you plan to have a healthy eating habit:

1. Food Choice

2. Portion Size

3. Eating Time

Food Choice
In order to make a healthy food choice, you need to have basic knowledge of food and nutrition. Looking at the food pyramid could be a good start, by identifying what food belongs to which food groups. Basically they are energy providing group which basically arw carbohydrate-rich group. Then there is the fruits and vegetables which provide vitamins and minerals. Also there is the fish, meat and poultry group, which also includes the legumes, providing protein rich food. Then comes the milk and dairy products, and lastly the fats, oils, salt and sugar, which includes condiments and sauces. Some people believe there is no such things as healthy food and bad food, but how you choose matters. Hence, reading about making healthy choice is important here to gain more knowledge, which food is better. Among the keywords you might come across are  wholegrain, wholemeal, high fiber, low calorie, glycemic index, and many more.

Portion Size
People say size matters. In this topic, yes it really does. Simple tips. Every time you want to fill up your plate with food, imagine that your plate is divided into quarters, i.e. four sections. The first quarter, fill it up with carbohydrate group; could be rice, noodle, tubers, bread and many more. The second quarter with protein rich food, i.e. fish, chicken or meat and lentils. The third and fourth quarter, fill up with choice of fruits and vegetables. Nah, now you basically have a 'healthy plate', provided you have made the right choice. Always try to say no for a second helping, this might need more training.

Eating time
Never skip breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day. Many studies show that skipping breakfast may increase the risk of becoming overweight. Try to have a regular eating time for the main meals; breakfast, lunch and dinner. Avoid taking sweet drinks during main meals in order to lower the calorie intake. If you need to have snacks (taking food between the main meals), take it moderately and preferably from the fruits and vegetables group. Add some dairy products such as low-fat yogurt.

Choose wisely, eat moderately and in a timely manner. You will feel better and healthier, insyaAllah.

Secret Garden on the Rooftop: Beautiful Landscape

I do love natures.

Once upon a time we were at One Utama. I saw this signage welcoming visitors to a Secret Garden on Level 5 (if I am not mistaken). Even better, it's free.

So we went up. Well, to me it is not disappointing. I even wonder how they can have such a garden on a roof top. Flowers, herbs, even trees. What a landscape.

This is supposed to be a WW entry, but I can't help blabbering... Now here are some of the pictures...

Tatau nama apa, kena tanya GadisBunga musti dia tau. Aiman kata Bunga Mercedes, huhu.

Pokok kunyit, tumeric. Cantik pulak bila sama-sama berbunga. Dulu sekali tumbuh banyak kat belukar sebelah rumah. Opah saya ajar buat kerabu daun kunyit. Ada bunga kunyit, laaagi sedap dan wangi.

Ini ke keladi gajah? Tinggi pada orang lagi.

Yang ni saya kagum, pokok terung. Saya pernah tanam tapi takdan la sampai besaq ni dah mampus.

Pokok terung pun tinggi, kita boleh tumpang berteduh..

MAY 2012

I have skipped April, and I can hear the blog calling for updates. Kesian kan blog saya...

So what happened in May?

Aiman's birthday of course. He is now a healthy five years old boy. And he talks a lot. Sometimes loyaq buruk a bit, but still funny as he talks from his heart I guess.

My son and I at Five years old.

The picture shows me and aiman at five y.o. Ada sama ka? The girl with bedak sejuk  is my cousin, we grew up together sharing the same hometown. Selepong bedak! but she said that's the secret to stay young, hehe.

We were in KL during his Bday, as I have to attend a meeting at IKU. He insisted to get on the LRT, because the day before I went to the meeting by LRT. So we went to KLCC to the Aquaria, which for me is quite expensive compared to the exhibits available. But yeah, the maintenance must be high, an ocean in the middle of a city. Then we round-round KLCC before we went back, I was not feeling well actually.

Tersongeh kat Taman KLCC. Babah dah semput sebab lumba lari dengan Aiman.

The following week we went to PD. I had another meeting with KKM for two days. Aiman and adik enjoyed playing in the pool, petang baru babah boleh join. For five consecutive weeks I have jobs out of office, penat woo. Macam la orang penting sangat kennn... (ni skim gaji bila nak revise ni?!)

I am happy at last I can stay at my home sweet home on weekend, but then mama aiman is attending a conference in Langkawi pulak this weekend... a single father I shall be then, huhu...

The sacrifice ...

Di suatu pagi yang indah, dua jantan masih gagah berkokok...

Di sebelah malamnya bertukar menjadi lauk santapan exotic.
Ini lah namanya ajal maut di tangan Tuhan. Rezeki manusia...
Burrrpp Alhamdulillah ;)

Please be considerate. Think of others too.

Otter  or memerang are among the creatures who enjoys plenty of water.
It has been raining for three days now, non-stop. No wonder some areas in Kuantan are flooding.

Everywhere is wet. One of my colleagues said, it is just water. Yes, water dropping from the sky. But I am very sure, not many people want to get wet, unless they purposely playing in the rain (which is fun actually).

This morning, when we arrived at Aiman's kindy, there was an El-Fart parking in the middle of the porch. Walhal, the porch is big enough to fit FOUR vehicles nicely at any one time, so FOUR family can drop their kids without getting wet. If you think your El-Fart is too big pun sampai you can not rapat tepi, move forward a little bit, so that people who come after you can still securely stop under the roof behind you.

OK, rain is just water anyway, but not many want to get wet. And parents surely don't want their babies and kids to walk under the rain. For us adults, we can park even under the rain, open the door, get out and run. But with babies and kids, plus their bags and what not, you just can't do that. It will take a bit more time, which by then you will already wet. Yes, you might say use your umbrella. Then I could say, why have a porch if you still want the umbrella? Further, in a heavy rain, an umbrella is quite useless. Use you brain lah sir.

After sending the kids, we went to another building as mama aiman wanted to take her 1Malaysia book voucher. Again, there was a car parking close to the entrance, leaving a space only a brave enough kancil can slip through. Only this time there was no porch.

It seems like the rain is making some people selfish, and a selfish person is a test to others. This is why Sabr or patience is one of the most important characteristics of a Muslim, Mu'min, Muttaqin.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer.

Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

(Al-Baqarah: 153)

:: Another test that needs sabr is to wake up in a cold morning while it was raining outside. Sedap tarik selimut tuu...

Happy Mothers Day 2011

I know it is tomorrow, but why wait?

[Al-Hadith]

There's a lot of Ayat in the Quran as well as Hadith of the Prophet telling us to be kind to our parents, love them and obey them at all time. Even after they are no longer living in this world, we should continue to pray for them. This is because we will never be able to pay back of what they have done to us, all the sacrifices they've made, especially mothers.

I dedicate this song especially to my mother -I love you mama- (wish she will read this), and to the mother of my children (I love you too), and to all mothers out there.

Listen and understand the lyrics... Happy Mothers Day...

Who should I give my love to?
My respect and my honor to?
Who should I pay good mind to?
After Allah
And Rasulullah

Comes your mother
Who next? Your mother
Who next? Your mother
And then your father

Cause who used to hold you
And clean you and clothe you?
Who used to feed you
And always be with you?
When you were sick
Stay up all night
Holding you tight

That's right no other
My mother

Who should I take good care of?
Giving all my love
Who should I think the most of?
After Allah
And Rasulullah

Comes your mother
Who next? Your mother
Who next? Your mother
And then your father

Cause who used to hear you
Before you could talk
Who used to hold you
Before you could walk?
And when you fell who picked you up
Clean your cut
No one but your mother
My mother

Who should I stay right close to?
Listen most to
Never say no to
After Allah
And Rasulullah

Comes your mother
Who next? Your mother
Who next? Your mother
And then your father

Cause who used to hug you
And buy you new clothes
Comb your hair
And blow your nose
And when you cried
Who wiped your tears?
Knows your fears
Who really cares?
My mother

Say Alhamdulillah
Thank you Allah
Thank you Allah
For my mother...

No Talent but I like it

I am sure most of us have at least a little passion towards music. Different people loves different music. However not everybody can play musical instrument.

I  love music. My sister can play organ very well, and the songs she played somehow imprinted in my head, and it brings sweet childhood memory whenever I listened to those songs again. From what I was told, my father used to play saxophone when he was very young. I am not sure why and when, my grandfather gave away my father's saxophone to someone when he went for training in the army. Haha, there must be some unrevealed secret that the younger generations in the family didn't know. Tak sempat nak tanya kat tok wan dulu.

As for me, I have no talent whatsoever in playing musical instruments. My parents sent me to organ class when I was in primary school. After 2-3 weeks I stopped. Alasan: cikgu cenge (garang). The real thing was my brain could not comprehend all those 'taugeh' (the notes) and compute them to my finger. I can play a few songs, but without reading the notes. Just by listening, then try it. That's why during the class I could play quite well, but during the test, when she gave me a new set of 'taugeh', I couldn't play. Haha... But my passion towards music never fade.

Gamelan is a type of musical performance, featuring a variety of instruments including xylophone, flute, gong, gendang and others. The first time I came into live contact with gamelan, I was a student living in KTDI (now KTSN). I was one of the facilitator during the orientation week, and they let me handle the 'kesenian and kebudayaan' things. So one of the activities the new students must do was gamelan performance. I don't know a thing besides enjoying the music, so there was someone there to coach them.

Indeed, I think gamelan has its own mystical factors as some other traditional musics, and it should be preserved. I am always amazed by the players' coordination and their movements of hands. I enjoyed the sound and music, be it the slow traditional songs, and especially when they perform contemporary musics...

I can't sit still listening to this music, the feel must be different if watching it live. Are they missing the angklung?

: : I have no objection at all for musical performance, provided they adhere to the code of adab.

The Jam That I Love

I used to live in KL for more than five years during my days as a university student. I never ever like the traffic - unpredictably jam packed most of the time.

Nevertheless, for people who have sweet tooth like me, bread and a spread of jam is something you need when the craving comes, but there's nothing like chocolate cakes, puddings, seri muka, tepung talam and whatnot is available at home.

Does high-sugar foods lead to diabetes? Well, directly, not. However, too much of sugar will eventually make you fat. These extra fat cells will then affect your body's hormones including insulin efficiency. That's why obesity is one of the risk factors for getting diabetes. If I'm not wrong, about 80% of diabetic patients are obese. On the other hand, not all obese people will have diabetic. Normal people still have chance to become diabetic, even the skinny one.  These explain that the real cause of diabetes is still uncertain - we only know the risk and contributing factors.

OK, enough on that scientific-academic debate. What I want to share about is this healthier choice of jam we always had. Everybody knows fruit jam is packed with load of sugars. So choosing one containing the least sugar, but still maintain the sweetness of a jam should have, is my priority.
St. Dalfour selections of fruit jam.
It claims to use all-natural ingredients, with at least 50% fruits, no added sugar, and suitable for diabetic. Because it is French made, some people may think I am not supporting Malaysian products . Just like chocolate, I've tried many brands, and normally it will have SUGAR as the main ingredient, plus colouring and flavouring. Just imagine, some kaya (also one of my favourite) also they put coloring in, and the texture was like gum.
Look at the real fruits - this one is blackberry. They have strawberry, peach, blueberry and many more.

Magic, anyone?

"OMG! I just missed one episode and now Morgana has taken over the throne!" That was what came into my mind when I started watching Merlin tonight. Yes, I missed last week's episode.

Watching Morgana on the throne, with the assistance of Morgause, was not good. Urther was captured and thrown into the dungeon. Arthur, Gaius and some others, of course Merlin too, were hiding in the cave in the woods, making plans. To cut it short, Merlin with his magic power (tonight he used the sword forged with dragon's breath that can destroy the living dead, mortal armies), together with Lancelot, Sir Leon and some others, successfully removed Morgana from the throne. She was gone without trace from the castle after that night. Urther was in trauma, and Merlin suggested Arthur to become the king. And now the legendary sword is in the stone, waiting for the right hand to claim for it.

I've been watching Merlin since when I was in Sydney, and tonight's episode was the most exciting episode so far, successfully keeping up my adrenaline level. Not just Merlin, I am all into magical fantasy movies. However, Merlin and Harry Potter are my all time favorite. I believe it is because of the settings, you know, with castles, knights, the centuries old creatures and those kind of things. I have all the Harry Potter books and really enjoyed reading them. They have this magic that can take me away, out of this real world, whenever I read them.

OK, tomorrow is Monday. Back to the real world!

:: I wish I have magic to make everyday is Sunday.

Tak reti bahasa, Tak rasa bersalah!

Everybody with a sound mind agreed that cigarette smoking is bad, not only for your health, but other people's health. And to take it further it also affects the physical, psychological as well as social well-being, not to mention the environment and the ecosystem. So you see here, we can have written hundreds of pages to discuss about the disadvantages of cigarette smoking. However, smokers will definitely have hundreds of reasons to support their decision to continue smoking. I'm sure many of us have met doctors who smoke.

Amik hang! Nak sangat isap rokok. Pic source here.
There are fatwas stating that smoking is haram. Paradoxically, there are still many ustazs who smoke, some heavily. In one of the kuliah I attended the ustaz was comparing smoking and fogging activity. He argued that why the authority allow fogging activity with huge quantity of smoke, but discourage people from taking cigarette where the quantity of smoke is very small. He continued saying 'I wonder why ... ' and arguing the issue using his logic thinking. Not once, if I still remember, he commented on the halal-haram of cigarette smoking. If only I was older and wise enough to argue in that kind of situation, I would have said something... eeee...

Whether we realize it or not, most of us are passive smokers. When my family and I walk into a restaurant, normally we will look for a table far away from smokers, especially now that ummu aiman is pregnant. However it's in the air. Not love, but smoke... (tetiba je dok nyanyi lagu 'Love is in the Air')

There was one time we went to have breakfast. The two apeks seating right next to us smoked after they're done with their roti canai. Then one of them buleh pulak juloq tangan close to aiman by resting his hand with the cigarette between his fingers on the chair next to him. Aiman started coughing and said 'busuk la bau asap ni' but i guess the apek was deaf. S**p*d!! Finally they finished  inhaling their precious smokes and blah.

Why can't we have a law that all restaurants and food outlets must have separate areas for smoking and non-smoking patrons? Make it compulsory. Smokers sit outside, or at the kaki-lima. This can be done by the local authorities, the PBTs. Just make sure the enforcement must be there lah.

But the real problem here is these smokers, many of them tak reti bahasa & tak rasa bersalah!

Another one down, More to go...

!مبروك مصر
Lama tak tangkap gambar bulan... The moon that witnessed the night Hosni Mubarak stepped down.

I woke up early this morning only to hear the happy news. The wait of 18 days has ended. Many have died martyrs. At last the people of Egypt has won, ousting the president for 30 years Hosni Mubarak. What A History!

Friday Prayer at Tahrir Square, Egypt. Source: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture
The peaceful demonstration by more than 2 million people, without any riot, showed that the people of Egypt are united and determined in asking the president to step down. With the support of the strong army, everything has been coordinated, from the medical precautions and even communication, despite the pressures and blockage imposed by the government.

Thanks to the technology, people outside Egypt can follow the updates. Source: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture.
Now the power to rule the country is temporarily in the hand of the armed forces. Historically, the Egyptian army was great. They have defeated the crusaders (perang salib), the Mongols, and some other historic wars and battles, including the Israel in the 70s. Now we hope and pray for more good things to come, towards the Unity of Muslim Ummah!

German Cockroaches!

German Cockroach is a small species of cockroach, not like the giant household cockroaches roaming in your kitchen. I set two of the sticky trap in my car and left for couple of weeks, and yeah look at the catch. The bait placed at the centre of the trap will lure the cockroaches, and once they stepped into the sticky 'floor' of their new home, they can't get away.

These germans are scavengers, will eat almost anything chewable. I believe they've made my car as their home due to food particles provided, well, mostly by aiman. Eventhough I clean my car regularly, but I can't help when it comes to the unreachable parts. That's why some people set no eating in the car as a rule for their kids, but I can't do that because I myself love to chew in the car particularly during long distance trips...

Got cockroach problem? Try Trap-A-Roach!

Tired of Traffic Jams

We were out of Kuantan for a few days as I have two jobs in the Klang Valley. On Saturday I have a workshop, on Monday night I have given a briefing  to a group of matriculation students, followed by interviewing them on Tuesday. I felt it was so packed and tiring I don't feel like talking, and I don't even bother to answer SMSes; one at 3.06 AM in the morning...

One thing I am very 'fond' of KL is the traffic jam. I thought that was the main reason I felt tired; not the jobs or workshop I was attending. Be it a highway, fast lane or whatever you called it, when the time comes for it to stop moving, you will be stuck.  An elderly lady commented she had missed some junctions and had to pay for 10 tolls before arriving at her destination. Some more, she also complained that the drivers just don't know how to queue at the toll plaza, and said even her 5 cats can take turns to feed from their cat bowl. Well, that is KL I guess. You missed one junction then you are in trouble. If you are not brave enough, people will surely take advantage over you. You will be squeezed out of your line!

Aiman was so excited with the 'dancing fountain', located between Mid Valley and The Garden.
Within four days I also managed to squeezed in some other activities. Beside spending time with my mother and my sister's family at her place, and of course staying with my PILs, we managed to drop by at Mid Valley, one of our favourite locations masa muda-muda dulu, hehe. But of course now it is more happening with a lot more shops opened and The Garden mall situated just next door. And our must activity always include eating and eating and eating. Well, we have to eat anyway to get energy, to live life...

Father and Son having meals and strengthening their bonding at The Garden.

Comparable of Gelatissimo in Sydney, Aiman got two servings of ice cream on that day alone.

Everything Fast

Time flies fast. To cope up with time, they have invented fast food.

KFC is all time favourite for fried chicken. I vote for OR.

Different from the hunter-gatherers time, when they delayed their meals for days and burned more calories in order to get food, we are now provided with drive-thru facilities where we just sit-and-drive to get to our food. And yet we eat more than them and burn less calories compared to them... No wonder obesity is everywhere.

Just tried this last week, the 7 cheeses pizza.
Realize it or not, fast-food restaurants are among the top lists when we are planning to eating out. It is mainly because they provide tasty, fast and easy food, you can make your choice straight away from the menu without having to quarrel with your partner about what dish to order. It is OK to have fast food every now and then, but not everyday or become a habit. As for us, we try to stick for not more than once a week, less is better.

Having physically active is the best way to burn all these extra calories you might have when eating fast food. But as I said, time flies fast. Most of us can not find enough time to fit the exercise schedule (but still can make time to eat, hehe). So they again create exercise equipments that can fit into your room. Aiman and his cousins have shown us how to use the treadmill in an innovative way ...

:: They invent fast food, we love so much, we eat and get fat. Then they invent exercise machine, tell us being fat is bad to make us exercise, and sell their product again. They got money, we lose money. So eat healthily and choose wisely!

Done is Better than Perfect

Have you ever started something, but it was never done, because you wanted to make it perfect? Let say, you have good topic to blog about, then you started writing the introduction. In the middle of writing, you can not find or remember the things you wanted to include in your article. You think without it your article will not look good (or perfect). So you save your blog in draft. After some time it is still in draft, waiting for the right time to be perfected.

You have an idea about a project. Your keep on thinking about it all the time. You know you will need to write a paperwork. But you think something is missing in your head. You write a reminder on a sticky-note, stick it on the wall, waiting for the ideal time to write 'the' perfect paperwork. Both your idea and the sticky-note are collecting dust, rusting.

Once  you've said 'Hi-hi' to someone, and started a relationship. Along the way, you found out he or she is not the right person because of some qualities were not up to your standard. Then you say 'Bye-bye' and stop talking, waiting for Mr or Ms Perfect to come to the rescue and you may live happily ever after. Sounds like in a fairy tale.

Nice huh!

They say nothing is perfect. They also say practice makes perfect. What are they talking?

I believe Less-than-Perfect is a good start. And the first step to a good start is getting it DONE.

Flood

After Perlis, Kedah and part of Penang had their worst flooding history a few months ago, lately the water level around the east coast's areas were rising. Even though seasonal flooding is an expected natural disaster caused by the monsoon and occurs almost every year, the flood will always take some life together. We human can only predict the monsoon, but the severity and what tragedy it may cause are out of our knowledge and control.

When I was in Australia, the major problem was drought. Many rivers were drying out. In summertime, bushfires were everywhere because it was too hot and dry. It even affected towns and cities burning down houses, leaving hundreds if not thousands of people homeless. The worst bushfire ever happened was in 2009 if I still can remember. Ironically, this year (end of 2010/early 2011) it was the other way round. Huge part of particularly eastern Australia were affected by flood.

For those who observe, there are many other kinds of unexpected disasters happening. Landslide, hailstorm, flashflood, climate change, just to name a few. Murder, rape, street robbing, baby dumping, can be considered as cultural disaster I guess. Allah s.w.t. said in the Quran:

ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُم بَعْضَ الَّذِي عَمِلُوا لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
"Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done
that perhaps they will return [to righteousness]."
(Ar-Rum: 41)

"Telah timbul berbagai kerosakan dan bala bencana di darat dan di laut dengan sebab apa yang telah dilakukan oleh tangan manusia; (timbulnya yang demikian) kerana Allah hendak merasakan mereka sebahagian dari balasan perbuatan-perbuatan buruk yang mereka telah lakukan, supaya mereka kembali (insaf dan bertaubat)." (Ar-Rum: 41)

Or maybe the world is now just too old huh...

Celebrating 2011

While many people are celebrating the New Year by having parties, concerts and of course fireworks, yet only a few may realize that with another year passing by we are coming closer and closer to the end of our life.  To celebrate or not to celebrate is not a big deal, but how you celebrate it is the main issue. Some people predict that nine month from tonight there will be many babies born without fathers. Well, that's part of the product of the celebration aye...

An Aussie caterpillar eating a gum leaf. Our life is just another type of metamorphosis, but every time we change form, we move to a different world.

May this new year brings us more happiness and success, in this world and for the hereafter. Happy New Year.

Kereta Kuda Merah

Sometimes I wish we were in the days where nature was still preserved, people don't know how pollution would be like, when we can drink water straight from the stream, eat chickens from our own backyard, and life could be very simple you don't have to go to uni and work so hard to have a good living... And this red horse carriage would be my favourite choice of  transportation...
