Caltex Journey Card

The Journey card from Caltex is a free loyalty card that rewards you every time you purchase petrol at selected Caltex Stations. The Journey card has partnered with BCARD where you can earn and redeem points at various merchants.

Every petrol (RON95/ RON97) purchase of 1 litre will earn you 1 reward point. Mart item purchases are not entitled for reward points. There must be a minimum of 100 reward points accumulated before redemption can be made. You can redeem for petrol (RON95/ RON 97), c-store items and lubricants but not for diesel.

Other than that, the Journey card just acts like an ordinary BCARD. To earn reward points at BCARD participating merchants, just present your Journey card at the counter every time you pay. You can redeem your points for desired purchases at any of the BCARD participating merchants as well.

To apply for Journey card, you just need to follow 3 simple steps below:

  1. Visit the nearest participating Caltex station and fill in the application form.
  2. Submit your completed form at the payment counter.
  3. Collect your new journey card on the spot.

Petrol Saving Tips

Other than using petrol rebate credit card and comparing petrol stations' reward points, I would like to share with you on some tips of how to save your petrol consumption. These do not require additional cost and we can start saving immediately by practising good habit.

  1. Keep your tyres at the right pressure. Correctly inflated tyres are safer and last longer. A tyre that is under inflated by 10% can reduce petrol economy. An under or over inflated tyre is also more susceptible to failing.
  2. Lose weight. Every extra pound or kilogram matters and affects your petrol efficiency. So keep your boot and back seat clear of unnecessary items that just add weight to your vehicle.
  3. Maintenance. Get your car serviced regularly according to the manufacturer's schedule to maintain engine efficiency and make sure you use the right specification of engine oil.
  4. Avoid excess idling. Idling gets you nowhere but still burns petrol. Turn the engine off when you’re in a queue, or waiting for someone. As a rule if you think you will be stopped for more than 10 seconds, switch off your engine.
  5. Plan trips carefully and avoid the rush hour. Cutting down on the time spent in the car is the easiest way to conserve petrol. To reduce driving time, combine all your short trips and errands into a single journey. Plus, if you can travel outside of peak times, you’ll spend less time stuck in traffic and consume less petrol as a result.
  6. Consider alternatives. If it's a short journey (a couple of kilometres or so) could you walk or cycle rather than taking the car?
  7. Slow down. The faster you drive, the more petrol your car uses.
  8. Pace your driving. Unnecessary speedups, slowdowns and stops can increase petrol consumption. Stay alert and drive steadily, not erratically. Keep a reasonable, safe distance from the car ahead of you and anticipate traffic conditions.
  9. Use air conditioning sparingly .Air conditioning puts added load on the engine and uses petrol to operate, so limit use to particularly hot days.
  10. Petrol matters. All petrols are not the same.  Your petrol economy can be improved through a combination of good driving habits and using the right petrol for your car.

Top 10 Petrol Cash Rebate Credit Cards

The price for RON95 petrol and diesel went up by 20 sen per litre from 12.01am today. This means RON95 would now cost RM 2.10 while diesel will cost RM 2.00 per litre. So if you're spending RM 300 per month on petrol, you would need to pay extra RM 30 every month from now on.

How can we minimize the impact of petrol hike to our expenses? Firstly, you can consider switching petrol stations as each petrol station has its own reward system as I shared previously. Secondly, you can consider to apply for a credit card that gives you good rebate on petrol.

This is the top ten list (not by ranking) of petrol rebate credit cards that I compile:

Card
Rebate
Cap
Terms & Conditions
HSBC Amanah MPower Visa Platinum Credit Card-i
8% max
RM 100
Saturday and Sunday, RM 2001 and above
SCB JustOne Platinum MasterCard Credit Card

PB-Esso Mobil Visa Gold Credit Card

Maybank Islamic PETRONAS Ikhwan Visa Gold Card-i

Maybankard 2 AMEX

RM 50
Saturday and Sunday, all petrol stations that accept AMEX
Hong Leong Wise Credit Card
10%
RM 100
Minimum 10 swipes of RM 50 and above
UOB One Card
5% + 2% SmartCash
RM25
Everyday, BHP petrol station
OCBC Titanium MasterCard
5%
RM 50
Everyday, all petrol station
CIMB Petronas Gold MasterCard
5%
RM 50
Every first weekend, Petronas petrol station

If you still use cash or normal credit card (RM 2 = 1 point) to pay for petrol, you should get one of the cards listed above. Select a card that is suitable for you according to your montly expenses, monthly petrol purchase amount and your choice of petrol station.

For monthly petrol consumption of RM 500 and below, I would recommend you UOB One Card, OCBC Titanium MasterCard or Maybankard 2 AMEX. The reason is that these cards give high rebates and do not impose minimum monthly spend or swipes.
