Allianz PNB Life continues to advocate for the secure future of Filipinos, especially the youth. Together with SOS Children’s Villages, the leading insurance brand in the world officially launched the “YouthCan!” mentorship program last Monday, April 11.

We trust that ‘YouthCan!’ will allow Allianz PNB Life to make this possible. We are looking forward to sharing our knowledge and expertise with the youth we will be mentoring, and we are positive that they will be prepared for what the future has in store for them, thanks to ‘YouthCan!’.” ~Alexander Grenz, Allianz PNB Life President and CEO

It also works to strengthen and uplift the communities it serves by giving parents the boost they need to support their families through health, education, and livelihood programs, and disaster and crisis response.

The “YouthCan!” Program was launched globally in 2017, with the goal of presenting the youth with opportunities to be economically productive, transforming the participants into dynamic leaders and independent, self-reliant individuals through one-on-one mentoring relationships, as well as virtual training sessions and web-based learning tutorials.

This ties in with Allianz PNB Life’s mission, which is to secure the future of every Filipino. Through “YouthCan!”, volunteers from the company will be partnered with an SOS mentee and are tasked with helping them acquire practical skills through training programs, job shadowing opportunities, and internships.

“‘YouthCan!’ is a great opportunity for us here at Allianz to make meaningful contributions to the lives of young Filipinos. We know that this program can inspire and encourage a new generation of leaders, opening doors for them to employment through skill development and access to networks, so we are very grateful for this continued collaboration with SOS.” ~Gino Riola, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Sustainability

Allianz PNB Life Partners with Mayor Isko for Bike Rack Art Installation Inspired by Memories of Growing Up in Manila

“Kakaiba ang proyektong ito. Dahil sa bukod sa ito’y kapaki-pakinabang, ito ay may mga disenyo na may kabuluhang kultural, maaaring maging tampulan ng atensyon ng ating mga bisita, lalo na ng mga turista (This project is different, Not only is it helpful; its design has a cultural significance that can gain the attention of visitors, especially tourists).” ~Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, Manila City Mayor

Official Launch of the Allianz Ride Safe Partnership in Manila at the Kartilya ng Katipunan Shrine. The event coincides with the commemoration of  "Araw ng Watawat'' (Flag Day) and serves as the kick-off activity leading to the celebration of the 450th Founding Anniversary of the City of Manila. Allianz PNB Life has recently partnered with the City Government of Manila led by Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, to promote its sustainability campaign and take inspiration from the City's beautiful and historic sites.

One of the world’s most sustainable insurers donated sculpted bike racks designed to evoke memories of Manila. Bike rack art installations were placed at Kartilya ng Katipunan Shrine, Rajah Sulayman Park, Plaza Roma, and Liwasang Bonifacio.

Crafted to encourage a culture of cycling among Filipinos and to stir local tourism, each bike rack was creatively designed to reflect the place for which it will be installed. The bike rack art installations were launched during the country’s commemoration of the “Araw ng Watawat” (Flag Day) at the Kartilya ng Katipunan, where one of the bike racks is located. The event also marked the beginning of the celebration of the 450th Founding Anniversary of the City of Manila.

“I’m very proud that we’re able launch it here today, and I’m even more honored that we also have the opportunity to add art to this beautiful city and help bring it back to the old glory. Again, big thank you to the city of Manila. A big thank you also to all the frontliners, to the employees of the city who all work hard during the pandemic, who went beyond and above to support the communities. We are very proud to be one of the most sustainable insurance companies in the world and we have a clear sustainability program in our DNA. Also, here locally, we had a lot of campaigns in the past. But then the pandemic came. For a lot of tragedies, there are also opportunities. We saw cyclists coming out. Bicycling became the new means of transportation, even better and sustainable. Sustainable mobility is environmentally friendly, and we’re very happy to see when we saw public transport coming back, we still see and I guess we’ll see even more bicyclists every day.~Mr. Alexander Grenz, President, and Chief Executive Officer, Allianz PNB Life

“Biking is one of the most sustainable means of transportation. It’s a small action to address big challenges. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions, it’s healthy for body and soul. It reduces traffic congestion and it reduces the risk of exposure the virus. But of course, it has to be safe. So, the installation of bike racks is an excellent way to encourage more people to ride their bikes while increasing their safety. Installing this bike rack here in this historical and cultural place is a great way to bring this to the people, to entice people to come here to experience the rich culture of Manila and also a small piece of German history here.” ~Ms. Laura Oexle, German Embassy Deputy Head of Mission

They were joined by Laura Oexle, German Embassy Deputy Head of Mission; Bernie Punsalan, Group Head for Luzon, Philippine National Bank; Carlos Leytte, Region Head, North Metro Manila, PNB; Atty. Guiller Asido, Administrator, Intramuros Administration; Charlie Duñgo, Director, Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila; Engr. Armando Andres, Director of the Department of Engineering and Public Works; Giovanni Evangelista, Director of the Parks and Development Office; and Kenneth Amurao, Director of the Department of Public Services.

Councilor Joel Chua, Majority Floor Leader of the City Council of Manila, led the opening prayer, followed by the raising of the flag by the Manila Police District. After the singing of the national anthem, Vice Mayor Lacuna led the patriotic oath.

Simultaneous inaugurations were also held in other locations of the bike racks. Kenneth Yu, Digital Brand Management Head, Allianz PNB Life, led the launch at the Rajah Sulayman Park, Roxas Boulevard of the Alon bike rack. He was joined by Amurao and Evangelista.

Bernadette Jalandoni-Pantoja, Bancassurance Distribution Partner Head, Allianz PNB Life, and Asido cut the ribbon at Plaza Roma, Intramuros for the Kalesa bike rack, while Carol Bernas, VP and Head for PNB Bancassurance, Allianz PNB Life, and Andres were at the Liwasang Bonifacio, Ermita for the Maya bike rack.

Inspiration Behind the Bike Rack Designs
  • The bike racks and art installations in Manila were designed by Mark Wesley Pahate— a Manileño himself.
  • Pahate was born and raised in Tondo and finished Advertising Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in España, Manila.
  • An advocate of street art, Pahate was an associate creative director at McCann World Group and Harrison Communications prior to starting his own boutique agency, Eggshell.
  • Tabak bike rack at the Kartilya ng Katipunan commemorates the bravery of the Katipuneros. It was placed strategically near the monument of hero Andres Bonifacio holding a tabak.
  • The Maya bike rack, meanwhile, is inspired by the little bird that once flew in abundance over the city’s parks and churches.
  • At Rajah Sulayman Park, where one can see Manila Bay from across Roxas Boulevard, the Alon bike rack will stand as a remembrance of the city’s historic bay and beautiful sunset.
  • The Kalesa bike rack at Plaza Roma in front of the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros is a reminder of how the horse-drawn carriage used to rule the streets during earlier times.

Apart from the bike rack installations, Allianz also donated personal and health insurance to 500 city hall employees and frontliners of Manila. These included personnel under the Office of the Mayor who is directly on the frontlines taking care of the districts. They received accidental death, dismemberment, and disability benefits and a coverage of up to PhP 100,000.

Allianz PNB Life launched its Ride Safe campaign in 2020 with the objective of promoting the use of the bicycle as a sustainable solution to the mobility problem brought about by the pandemic. Hailed as one of the world’s most sustainable insurers, Allianz has advocated for healthier and more sustainable alternatives of transport.

Tapatan sa Aristocrat Special Edition on Bicycle Advocacy as Alternative Means of Transport

“Sa Allianz, nais naming palawakin ang pagbibisikleta. Doon nagsimula ‘yung insipirasyon na makisali kami sa mga local government units na ayun din ang pakay. Kaya nagsimula ang partnership kasama ng San Juan at ninanais namin na magpatuloy ito (At Allianz, we want to promote biking. That’s how the inspiration started to work with local government units that have the same goal. This is also how our partnership with San Juan started, and we hope that we could continue this). Madalas nakikita natin sa ating lipunan, hindi nangyayari kasi nagiisa ang isang grupo. Pero pag sama-sama nangyayari. (Oftentimes, we see that ideas don’t materialize because there is only one group working. If we work together, we can make things happen.” ~Gino Riola, Allianz PNB Life Chief Marketing Officer
Biking: Towards a Healthy and Sustainable Lifestyle

"Tapatan sa Aristocrat Special Edition on Bicycle Advocacy", Biking: Towards a Healthy and Sustainable Lifestyle, hosted by veteran journalist Melo Acuña. The forum focuses on various initiatives towards biker safety and biking as a sustainable transportation alternative for Filipinos. The discussion explores the public-private sector partnerships in promoting green mobility projects. With representatives from the Department of Transportation, MMDA, and other leading organizations as guest speakers. During the weekly Tapatan sa Aristocrat, representatives from both the government and the private sector came together to discuss how biking can be safer and more sustainable transport means. It was attended by:
  • The Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary, Engr. Bert Suansing
  • Dr. Antonio Dans of the Philippine General Hospital and the Health Professionals Alliance Against COVID-19 (HPAAC)
  • Allianz PNB Life Chief Marketing Officer Gino Riola
  • Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Traffic Discipline Office Director Noemi Recio
  • Mia Bunao of Kalyetista
Tapatan sa Aristocrat Special Edition on Biking Advocacy

While many Filipinos have taken up biking during the pandemic, rider education and awareness are still needed to position it as a viable alternative transport solution.

Did you know that bicycles were being promoted during the 1918 pandemic as an alternative to trains, buses, and other forms of public transportation?

Biking: Towards a Healthy and Sustainable Lifestyle

According to Dr. Dans, biking meets the recommendations on transportation safety of the HPAAC, which includes adequate ventilation, physical distancing, shortened interaction, and personal protection.
“Bikes can satisfy all four criteria. In fact, some of the oldest companies making bikes in the United States began in 1918 and continued to make bikes today because it really helped people travel safely. Biking is really protective. At MMDA, we fully support biking. In fact, kahit wala pang pandemic, nagkaroon na ng protected bike lanes ang MMDA. Lahat na ginawa naming bike lanes are all protected (In fact, even when there was no pandemic, the MMDA already put up protected bike lanes. All the bike lanes we put up are protected).” ~Dr. Antonio Dans of the Philippine General Hospital and the Health Professionals Alliance Against COVID-19 (HPAAC)
Dr. Antonio Dans of the Philippine General Hospital and the Health Professionals Alliance Against COVID-19 (HPAAC)

Dr. Dans underlined the importance of future-proofing the country’s bike lanes as it could help lower the risk of future pandemics; reduce traffic and traffic accidents; reduce pollution and cancer; increase physical activity; control obesity; and diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and heart attack.
“At MMDA, we fully support biking. In fact, kahit wala pang pandemic, nagkaroon na ng protected bike lanes ang MMDA. Lahat na ginawa naming bike lanes are all protected (In fact, even when there was no pandemic, the MMDA already put up protected bike lanes. All the bike lanes we put up are protected),” ~Dir. Noemi Recio, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Traffic Discipline Office Director
Dir. Noemi Recio, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Traffic Discipline Office Director

She added that the MMDA currently has bike repair stations along EDSA that are mostly located underneath flyovers.

Allianz PNB Life, meanwhile, recently launched a Ride Safe campaign, which seeks to promote biking as a healthy and sustainable means of transport. Last week, it signed a partnership with San Juan, which made it the Official Life Insurance Partner of the city’s own Bike Safety campaign.

Gino Riola, Allianz PNB Life Chief Marketing Officer

In line with this partnership, Allianz has provided safety bollards and other infrastructure for San Juan’s bike lanes. It is also putting up a solar-powered bike pit stop, a first in the Philippines, which will have a parking area, bikers’ resting area, and a small footprint bike repair station.
“We have to do it the right way the first time. Anything infrastructure is really expensive, and if you don’t do it the right way, sayang po siya (Anything infrastructure is really expensive, and if you dont do it the right way, it would just be a waste).” ~Mia Bunao of Kalyetista
Mia Bunao of Kalyetista

Bunao of the bikers’ group, Kalyetista, pointed out that the pandemic ushered in something that they have been asking and fighting for.

Buano recommended that government agencies come up with bicycle commuting programs and set up bicycle parking systems.

For people who don’t have bikes but would like to take up biking, the government has rolled out a Bike-Sharing Program, where people could borrow bikes equipped with GPS for a certain fee.
“Para sa mga taong gustong magbisikleta, under the Bayanihan 2, actually isang bilyon ang nilaan natin diyan, ‘yung bike lanes at bike-sharing. Hindi lang ‘yan sa Metro Manila. Tatlong lugar. Meron din sa Cebu at sa Davao. Isang parte niyan tungkol sa bike-sharing na station to station ‘yan, pwede mong hiramin yung bisikleta. Of course, may bayad yan. We still have to compute the absolute figure, pero siguradong mas mura yan kesa magko-commute ka using the bus or jeepney per kilometer (For those who would like to bike, under the Bayanihan 2, we have allotted PhP1 billion for bike lanes and bike-sharing. It’s not only in Metro Manila, but in Cebu and Davao as well. A part of that is for bike-sharing. You can borrow bikes from station to station. It has a payment. We still have to compute the absolute figure, but it would be much cheaper than jeepney or bus fares per kilometer).” ~Engr. Bert Suansing, Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary
Engr. Bert Suansing, Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary

Riola said that in order to further promote biking as an alternative means of transport, awareness, education, and Partnerships are needed.
