Nightfall
Devil's Night #4
By: Penelope Douglas
Book Synopsis:

From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Douglas comes the thrilling, final installment in the Devil's Night series...

𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐘

They call it Blackchurch. A secluded mansion in a remote, undisclosed location where the wealthy and powerful send their misbehaving sons to cool off away from prying eyes.

Will Grayson has always been an animal, though. Reckless, wild, and someone who was never bound by a single rule other than to do exactly what he wanted. There was no way his grandfather was going to risk him humiliating the family again.

Not that the last time was entirely his fault. He might’ve enjoyed backing me into corners in high school when no one was looking, so they wouldn’t catch on that
Mr. Popular actually wanted a piece of that quiet, little nerd he loved to torture so much, but…

He could also be warm. And fierce in keeping me safe.

The truth is… He has a right to hate me.

It’s all my fault. Everything.

Devil’s Night. The videos. The arrests.

I’m to blame for all of it.

And I regret nothing.

𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋

I never minded being locked up. I learned a long time ago that being treated like an animal gives you permission to act like one. No one has ever looked at me any other way.

Their only mistake is believing anything I do is an accident. I can sit in this house with no Internet, television, liquor, or girls, but I’ll come out of here with something far more frightening to my enemies.

A plan.

And a new pack of wolves.

I just didn’t expect one of my enemies to come to me.

I don’t know who smuggled her in or if they meant to leave her here, but I can smell her hiding in the house. She’s here.

And as the security detail leaves the supplies, the gates close, and the door to my gilded cage opens, giving me free reign of the house and grounds for another unsupervised month, I remember with a smile…

Blackchurch houses five prisoners. I’m only one of her problems.

*Nightfall is a full-length, romantic suspense. It’s necessary to read the prior installments before starting this finale. It is suitable for readers 18+.

Book Summary:

From #1 Amazon Bestseller L.J. Shen comes a new, emotional standalone about first love, second chances, and overcoming breathtaking losses at a young age.

Vaughn Spencer.
They call him an angry god.
To me, he is nothing but a heartless prince.
His parents rule this town, its police, every citizen and boutique on Main Street.
All I own is a nice, juicy grudge against him for that time he almost killed me.
Between hooking up with a different girl every weekend, breaking hearts, noses and rules, Vaughn also finds the time to bully little ole’ me.
I fight back, tooth and nail, never expecting him to chase me across the ocean after we graduate high school.
But here he is, living with me in a dark, looming castle on the outskirts of London.
A fellow intern. A prodigal sculptor. A bloody genius.
They say this place is haunted, and it is.
Carlisle Castle hides two of our most awful secrets.
Vaughn thinks he can kill the ghosts of his past, but what he doesn’t know? It’s my heart he’s slaying.

Angry God is a stand-alone, DARK High School Romance. It deals with sensitive subjects some may find triggering.

My Thoughts:

I love LJ Shen's writing.  She develops the most deeply layered characters, and emotional reading experiences.  I am a huge fan of the All Saints High Series.  Vaughn's story was deep, dark, and twisted.  While he was a difficult character to like at first, we saw glimpses of the good in him throughout the story.  We end up learning why Vaughn because so angry, and appeared unfeeling and coldhearted.  The reason broke my heart.  However, we end up with a spectacular happily ever after, and a story that I was glued to from beginning to end!

About the Author:

L.J. Shen is a USA Today, Washington Post and Amazon #1 best-selling author of contemporary, New Adult and YA romance. Her books have been sold to nineteen different countries. She lives in California with her husband, son, cat and eccentric fashion choices, and enjoys good wine, bad reality TV shows and catching sun rays with her lazy cat.

And as a part of them.

She also realizes that lines blur and rules become easy to break when no one else is watching.

One of them has her.

The other one wants her.

But he…

He’s going to keep her.

*Credence is a new adult standalone novel suitable for readers 18+.

My Thoughts:

Kinky, erotic, and a bit twisted.  The beginning was slow building, the middle had me glued to my kindle, and the end packed a powerful and emotional punch!  This is a story that will spark a lot of controversy, and isn't going to be for everyone, but I loved it, and couldn't put it down!

Mature Content:
Erotica 18+

Book Synopsis:

"I've done far worse than what I went to prison for. She has no idea how bad this can get."

WINTER

Sending him to prison was the worst thing I could've done. It didn't matter that he did the crime or that I wished he was dead. Perhaps I thought I'd have time to disappear before he got out or he'd cool off in jail and be anything but the horror he was.

But I was wrong. Three years came and went too fast, and now he's anything but calm. Prison only gave him time to plan.

And while I anticipated his vengeance, I didn't expect this.

He doesn't want to make me hurt. He wants to make everything hurt.

DAMON

First thing's first. Get rid of her daddy. He told them I forced her. He told them his little girl was a victim, but I was a kid, too, and she wanted it just as much as I did.

Step two... Give her, her sister, and her mother nowhere to run and no fuel to escape. The Ashby women are alone now and desperate for a knight in shining armor.

But that's not what's coming.

No, it's time I listened to my father and took control of my future. It's time I showed them all--my family, her family, my friends--that I will never change and that I have no other ambition than to be the nightmare of their lives.

Starting with her.

She'll be so scared, she won't even be safe in her own head by the time I'm done with her. And the best part is I won't have to break into her home to do it.

As the new man of the house I have all the keys.

*Kill Switch is a romantic suspense suitable for readers 18+. It is advised to read Corrupt (Devil's Night #1) and Hideaway (Devil's Night #2) prior to reading this book. Both are available on Kindle Unlimited.

Lindy's Thoughts:

Kill Switch is the third book in the Devil's Night Series.  Each story in this series includes the "Four Horseman," (Michael, Kai, Damon and Will;) has a large plot that includes these central characters, and a smaller plot that focuses on one of the horseman and the woman that he has a love/hate obsession with.  Therefore, it is highly recommended that you read these books in order, so that you are not lost.

Kill Switch is Damon and Winter's story.  These two character's have a long, dark and fascinating history with one another.  They met when she was just eight and he was eleven years old.  Throughout the years, interest, fascination, attraction, and temptation, have turned in to obsession, seduction, and rage; due to a variety of circumstances that were out of their control for the most part.

Damon is the most twisted and disturbing of the four horseman.  However, we learn the reasons behind his dark ways.  Little by little, we see a softer side and vulnerability that Winter soley brings out in Damon.  I thought it was great how Ms. Douglas gave Damon's character so many complex layers.  It added dimension and made his character interesting and realistic.  I loved how loyal, protective, and devoted he was to those he cared about.  With Winter, we see her strength, perseverance, resilience, and gutsiness.  She can be vulnerable, as well as feisty.  She doesn't let anyone run all over her, and that was a huge part of her appeal to Damon.  I loved her character!

The plot of Kill Switch was slow-paced in certain areas, and fast-paced in others.  I especially loved the ending, and all of the exciting and unexpected plot twists!  The story delivered a variety of different elements.  There were parts that were sexy, as well as suspenseful, and emotional, which added to the ebb and flow of the story.  A word of caution, this story is written for mature audiences and has dark and explicit erotic elements.  This is not a "vanilla," romance, so if that is not your "thing," then this story is not for you.

It was wonderful being reunited with all of the characters from the previous books in the series, and I am really looking forward to getting Will's story next.  The teaser for his story had me dying to get my hands on it right now!!!  The Devil's Night Series is unique and unlike anything I've ever read before.  I have enjoyed all of these books immensely, and am a total fan girl for everything written by Penelope Douglas!

Mikki's Review:

The Horseman are backkkkk!!! Kill Switch was my most anticipated book of 2019 and it did not disappoint! Penelope Douglas always finds a way to transport me into a world I never want to leave. I am absolutely in love with her writing style. The beauty about her stories is that no matter how many times you read them, you always end up falling in love with her words and characters all over again.

Kill Switch is the third book in the Devil's Night Series. You need to read Corrupt and Hideaway to follow Damon's journey. He's kind of complicated and addictive so you need to find out all the things he did before reading his book. I love that every book is a puzzle to this intoxicating world of Devil's Night.

In this book we follow Winter and Damon. Their story is intense and passionate. The baddest Horseman is about to meet his match. There is a thin line between love and hate and these two are about to cross it. Be ready for a reading journey filled with shocking revelations and unexpected twists and turns.

Damon's book exceeded all of my expectations. I was expecting this story to grab me from beginning to end and it did not disappoint! I already knew I was going to love Winter since all of Pen's heroines have a special place in my heart. I really loved how she pushed all of Damon's buttons. She made him step out of his comfort zone and I saw a side of him I did not expect. I was really surprised by his actions and how he changed during this journey. It was amazing to see all of the other characters and the role that they each have in this saga. I can't wait to reunite with all of them again.

Penelope Douglas saved the most intriguing Horseman for last. Will is still an enigma to me and I can't wait to read his story. The little sneak peek we got at the end of Kill Switch totally made my heart race. These stories keep on getting more intense and all-consuming. Kill Switch was a page-turning reading journey that left me wanting more! If you have not met the Four Horseman, you are seriously missing out! The bad boys of Devil's Night will rock your world!

Synopsis:

JORDAN

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go.

He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.

He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.

I have to stop this. It can’t happen.

My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.

Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.

 I am.

PIKE

I took her in, because I thought I was helping.

She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.

As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.

The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.

But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.

And her boyfriend’s father.

Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

Excerpt:

Jordan is working at a bar, and Pike comes in to meet friends.

PIKE

“What the hell is she wearing?” I grumble, sliding into the booth.

Dutch turns his head toward me, his drink inches from his lips. “It’s the lingerie show,” he tells me. “They have it every Thursday night. The bartenders and servers don nighties or corsets and serve drinks and food. It’s fun.”

No, not really.

But I look around and see a few other ladies carrying out appetizers and bringing drinks, some of them in very thin attire. At least Jordan’s corset looks as thin as armor.

“But Jordan’s never done it before,” he goes on. “That’s what shocked me. Thought you should know.”

“Why the fuck would I want to know?” I pull a beer out of the ice bucket on the table.

“Yeah, sorry.” He turns away, mumbling into his glass, “You seem like you couldn’t care less.”

I shoot him a sideways look, hearing the laughter in his words.

Sticking the beer back in the bucket, untouched, I rise and head to the bar. I hear a snort behind me, but I don’t care. She’s kind of my responsibility, and I don’t want her doing things like this, because she thinks she needs money.

There’s only one bartender besides Jordan. The owner, Shel. I’m sure she hasn’t forgotten me, so I veer to the opposite end and catch Jordan’s attention as she pops the tops from a line of six bottles of beer.

“What the hell are you wearing?” I lean in, speaking as quietly as I can.

She jerks her head toward me, meets my eyes, and quickly turns away again like I’m the last person she wants to deal with right now.

She hands over the beers, collects the cash and spins around, punching the screen in front of her. “It’s fine,” she assures me. “It’s just a corset, Pike.”

“They are all looking at you.”

She nods, smiling sarcastically. “That’s the point.”

“Jordan,” I sigh, trying to whisper as I squeeze around some old dude at the bar. “This is a small town. What if your father were to walk in?”

“He doesn’t come in here,” she says, closing the register drawer and finally looking at me.

“And neither do you, normally.” A blush crosses her cheeks. “Besides, I’m not stupid. I wouldn’t take part in something I thought would humiliate me.”

She turns and hands the change back to the customer, but he waves her off, letting her keep it. She smiles and turns back around, dropping the bills into an already overflowing canister.

“What are you even doing here?” she says, starting to mix another drink. “I thought you were sitting the bachelor party out, because…” She sets the bottle down and does air quotes as she imitates my growling voice, “‘there needed to be at least one sober person at work tomorrow’.”

I arch a brow at her. I don’t sound like that.

Reaching into my pocket, I pull out the flyer and push it over the bar at her.

She stills, and her face goes ashen. “Where did you find that?”

She grabs it and dumps it somewhere under her. To a trash can probably.

Taking a napkin, she sets it in front of a customer and gives him the fresh drink she just made.

“If you need money,” I tell her, “I’ll lend you whatever you need, okay?” And she stops, slowly turning her eyes on me. Her gaze sharpens, angry, and she looks like she wants to yell at me, but she doesn’t. Instead she whips around and barrels down the bar and through the partition, turning only enough to crook a finger at me before she twirls back around and heads down the hallway.

My stomach sinks. I really don’t mean to piss her off as much as I do. What did I say now?

Veering through the crowd, I make my way down the empty hallway, finally coming to the same room she was crying in when I pissed her off the last time.

Entering through the open door, I see her standing with her hands on her hips and her head cocked at me.

“I would rather eat from a dumpster than take money from you,” she bites out.

I should shut up. But God help me, I can’t. “Hate to break it to you, but you already do,” I tell her. “You live in a house where you pay no rent or utilities, young lady.”

“I cook and clean for you!” she shouts, but I doubt anyone can hear us back here and through the music. “I pay my way, you arrogant prick!”

“Alright, alright,” I growl, blinking long and hard. “You’re right, okay? But, Jordan, men will get ideas. They’ll think they have a free pass and they can touch what belongs to my son. You’re embarrassing him.”

“Your son?” she mocks, laughing. “Well, you just missed him, actually. He already saw me, and he doesn’t care, Pike. He thought I looked good, and then he left with his friends. He doesn’t care!”

“Well, I care!”

The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them, and I freeze, almost too afraid to breathe.

Oh, shit. What did I just say?

Review:

Penelope Douglas is in my top five favorite author list. I devour each book she releases and I was so excited when I learned about this surprise release. Birthday Girl is a standalone contemporary romance that will give you all the feels. Jordan and Pike stole a piece of my heart and I have no doubt that they are stealing hearts all around the world. Bookworms all over the world will go nuts for this slow burn taboo romance!

I don't want to spoil anything so I will keep my recap of this story short and sweet. The blurb tells you all you need to know about the beginning of Jordan and Pike's journey. Pike is torn because his son's girlfriend is taking a big place in his life after she moves in. Jordan is a temptation that is driving him crazy, but as days go by they share special moments and their connection grows stronger. Their story will captivate you from beginning to end!

The chemistry and connection between Jordan and Pike was AMAZING!!! The author wrote their story in such a way that I felt like I knew them since forever. I loved the friendship they shared and how it slowly turned into an unforgettable love story. From their first meeting to their first kiss, each moment that Jordan and Pike created together was memorable. Jordan is the kind of heroine I love to cheer for. She's strong, confident and goes after what she wants. Don't even get me started on Pike!!! He's so swoony!!! What a beautiful, kind, sexy and passionate hero. He literally made me melt!!! Prepare your fans because these two together are FIRE!!!

I stayed up past my bedtime to finish this book because I simply could not put it down! Penelope Douglas always delivers the most fascinating, addictive, sexy, passionate and all-consuming stories. I never have trouble connecting with her characters and I love that once I finish reading one of her books, I always go back to revisit these characters whenever I find myself in a reading book slump. Her writing style is sublime!!! I can feel how much she loves her characters and how she gives her 200% in each story she writes. I highly recommend Birthday Girl or any of her books if you're looking for your next unputdownable reading escape!
