The Perfect Gift for New Plant Mamas: Plant Puzzle Jungle Terrarium review - Step By Step Guide

Wednesday, 15 December 2021

Whether you're a plant-obsessed newbie or already have a growing number of plants taking over your home, this Plant Puzzle Jungle Terrarium is the perfect gift!

My Instagram feed has been full of quirky and beautiful terrariums, recently and these self-containing eco-systems have been capturing the imagination of many - in fact, terrariums have been cropping up in several bestseller gift guides lately.

I decided to give myself an early Christmas present and purchased this Plant Puzzle Jungle Terrarium in the Bloombox Club Black Friday sale last month. Not only was it a much more affordable option than several other DIY terrariums that I was looking at, but it came with a light which I thought looked pretty cool.

Upon opening the box, I found a very handy and easy-to-follow instruction guide so this is ideal for beginners and kids alike.

The Plant Puzzle Jungle Terrarium came with the following items:-
  • A large recycled Glass Terrarium with lid and light
  • Three different Baby Plants
  • White Stone Gravel
  • Active Charcoal
  • Soil
Putting it together couldn't be easier, but here's a quick step-by-step guide to show you what I did.

Step One: Add The White Stone Gravel
As closed terrariums are classed as self-containing eco-systems, it's important that your very first layer is a decent quantity of stone gravel. This acts as a drainage layer to help the terrarium maintain the right level of humidity and to stop the roots of the plants inside from rotting.

Step Two: Add Active Charcoal
Equally important is a layer of active charcoal which helps to stop mold from forming in your terrarium. Nobody likes mold! This is added on top of the stone gravel.

Step Three: Add Soil
Inside the box, there are two disks of soil. To get them ready for your terrarium, simply put each disk into their own large bowls, and pour 500ml of warm (not boiling) water over each one. Allow the water to soak into the disks and after around 15 minutes, the disks will have turned into regular-looking soil. I'd recommend waiting a further 30 minutes or so for the soil to cool down before adding it to your terrarium so you can control the temperature better.

Step Four: Add The Plants
Now it's time to add the plants! Very carefully remove your plants from their nursery pots and plant them one by one, into the soil in the terrarium. This took a little longer than I was anticipating and it's recommended that you try to space them out so they have room to grow and that they aren't touching the glass, so go for a more central placing.

The baby plants in my terrarium are (from top clockwise) Pilea (aka Chinese Money Plant), Spider Plant, and Peperomia.

The finished terrarium!
And there you have it, a super easy little ecosystem that you don't really need to do much maintenance with. Place it in an area that gets a lot of natural light, but not in direct sunlight as this will heat the inside of the terrarium up too much. Every so often, you can take the lid off and let some fresh air circulate for an hour, before closing it up again - this will further help to prevent any future mold issues.

Watering?
You don't need to water a terrarium unless you start to see the soil look dry, and even then, water very sparingly. The humidity in the terrarium will keep the plants happily hydrated, so there's not much else to do other than enjoy its beauty.

Oh, here's a quick photo of my terrarium in the dark with the light on - pretty cool, huh?

Are you a fan of terrariums and closed eco-systems?

Sunday, 19 September 2021

One of my favourite British natural skincare brands, Nourish London, are celebrating 10 years of organic, green & vegan beauty with a very special Birthday Collection set this month!

I love a big birthday and what better way to mark the occasion of 10 years in the green beauty business than with an extra special, limited-edition collection of bestsellers?! This is exactly what Nourish London has recently released and I can't wait to show you all the goodies which are inside. Happy Birthday, Nourish!

This beautiful gift comes wrapped up in a 100% organic cotton reusable drawstring bag that's been by Freeset, a fairtrade and ethical, eco-friendly business that helps vulnerable women in India with a livelihood to support their families.

Nourish Kale 3D Cleanse (30ml)

Worth £9, this travel-size version of Kale 3D Cleanse is Nourish's award-winning cleanser. It has a really interesting colour changing format which goes from white to green as you massage it into the skin and activate all those natural and organic ingredients such as Kale, Hyaluronic Acid, Griffonia and Probiotics. I love this because it doubles up as a make-up remover so it's the perfect evening cleanser to take the day off with, leaving behind beautifully clean and refreshed skin.

Nourish Antioxidant Peptide Mist (15ml)

There's nothing quite like a revitalising toner mist to help perk your skin up and this mini Antioxidant Peptide Mist is a bit of a hidden gem in Nourish's skincare range so this is a great way to try it. Infused with Hyaluronic Acid, brightening Liquorice, antioxidants such as Turmeric, anti-ageing Peptides and a host of Probiotic minerals, this clever mist helps to brighten a dull complexion for a more radiant glow.

Nourish Argan Anti-Ageing Peptide Serum (15ml)

A good anti-ageing serum is an essential in your skincare routine and all skin types will benefit from Nourish's Anti-Ageing Peptide Serum. Another award-winner, this supercharged serum boasts an impressive formula of Kale, Tripeptides, Hyaluronic acid and Argan Oil which work together to help boost healthy collagen production, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Nourish Argan Skin Renew Moisturiser (full size)

The star of the Birthday Collection is a full-size bottle of Nourish Argan Skin Renew Moisturiser that's worth £30 and has been re-packaged with a new self-locking smart pump that gets rid of the plastic cap so there's less waste. I've used this moisturiser many times in the past and I absolutely love the silky rich texture it has. Key ingredients include Argan Oil, Vitamin E, Tripeptides, Frankincense, Myrrh, Rose of Jericho and Borage to provide the skin with everything it needs to be plumped, hydrated, smooth and firm.

Nourish Probiotic Multi-Mineral Repair Mask (2 x 5ml)

Last, but not least, no Limited Edition set would be complete without a luxury pampering treatment and these samples of the Probiotic Multi-Mineral Repair Mask are a brilliant weekly quick fix for your skin. Specially formulated with a nutrient-rich blend of probiotic minerals such as Magnesium, Zinc, Copper and Iron, and infused with Damask Rose and Lavender essential oils, this mask calms any inflammation from pollution and environmental aggressors and rebalances the skin.

The Weekend Post: My First Virtual Blogger Event with Moonpig - Cards, Cocktails & Flowers #MoonpigMoments

Sunday, 24 May 2020

My First Virtual Blogger Event with Moonpig - Cards, Cocktails & Flowers #MoonpigMoments
Last Thursday evening, I took part in my first ever Virtual Blogger Event via Zoom! The event was hosted by Moonpig to help spread the word of the brand's mobile app which makes it easy to send cards and gifts to loved ones during these difficult times.

Although some restrictions on the lockdown within England have recently been eased (such as unlimited outdoor exercise etc), it's still not permitted or considered safe for people to visit family and friends at their homes due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This has been putting a big strain on relationships and the emotional aspects of not being able to see your family or friends have been upsetting to say the least.

Thankfully, technology has been amazing for keeping in touch with those outside of your immediate household, and it's been great to see more people going back to some 'old-fashioned' ways of communication such as sending a card in the post and making more phone calls. Before Covid-19 happened, I couldn't remember the last time that I received a physical card through the letterbox, but now every time that I get one from a friend or family member, it instantly cheers me up!

moonpig app
Back to the virtual blogger event, after a quick 'Hello!' to everyone who joined in over Zoom, we were introduced to a demo of the Moonpig app (you can download it here) by Jasper, which is available for both iOS and Android customers. The app is free to use and it's quick and simple to set up your account by just filling in a few details at the sign-up process. Once you're all set up, you can browse the hundreds of card designs that Moonpig has available, and they really do have a card for everyone and every occasion from classics to the more contemporary - I spotted some Tiger King ones whilst I was scrolling through earlier which are quite funny ;)

At the top of the homepage on the app is a slideshow of the current Moonpig offers and I thought this made the shopping experience even easier as it was clear to see the discount codes. Who doesn't love a cheeky bargain?!

moonpig app
moonpig app
The ordering process is also incredibly concise and easy - just select the card that you're interested in and then it displays how you can personalise it - there's even the opportunity to 'handwrite' a message inside the card using a stylus pen which I thought was a lovely touch.

As you can see above, Moonpig has three card options to choose from; a digital eCard (handy if you've left things too late!), a Standard Card size and a Giant Card size which is brilliant if you want something that's more of a novelty. iOS users can even use the AR view on the app to physically see how big the cards are by moving your phone around the room, a digital card pops up on any surface which is very clever.

There are lots of interesting features within the app including a page to add a reminder date and an option to import from an online calendar. I'm terrible for forgetting the dates of people's birthdays so this feature instantly appealed to me and I've already synced up my calendar to my account so there are no excuses now!

mix and twist cocktails
After the app demo, we were treated to a Cocktail Masterclass with James from Mix and Twist and using the contents of a very generous cocktail box which had been delivered the day before, we created three delicious cocktails using Silent Pool Gin as the main ingredient. I love gin so I'd been looking forward to this part all week!

silent pool gin
The first cocktail was called a Gin Garden (above) which was bursting full of flavour thanks to plenty of fresh mint and cucumber. Next, we had a fun 'quick-fire' round where we raced to make an Elderflower Collins - I almost spilt the entire bottle of Gin over my keyboard in the process but luckily it all went to plan and the result was delicious! Finally, the last cocktail was perhaps my favourite - a Strawberry Gimlet which involved a fresh Strawberry puree and of course, plenty of Gin. Yum - thank you James for being an awesome bartender!

Moonpig flowers
Moonpig flowers
Moonpig are not just famous for their personalised cards, their range of fresh delivery flowers is simply beautiful and for the final part of the event, we had the pleasure of taking part in a Flower Workshop with Roxanne. She shared her top tips for arranging a professional-looking bouquet and offered advice on how to make fresh flowers last longer which I found really useful. We were able to arrange our own bunch thanks to a gorgeous fresh flower delivery from Moonpig which featured their bestselling Luxury Rose and Peony Boquet* (above, £50, link)

I was truly blown away when this arrived as the flowers were in perfect condition and I've enjoyed watching the Peonies come into bloom over the past few days; they are so stunning.

One of the many gifts available at Moonpig

I thoroughly enjoyed the Virtual Blogger Event and had a great time chatting to fellow bloggers over Zoom. I hope more brands do these virtual events now and in the future, as I've often struggled to accept event invites due to not living in London, so this makes it so much more inclusive for bloggers to join in. Thank you Moonpig for being an amazing host!

Christmas Gift Guide 2019: The Alternative Gifts Edit - Practical, Useful & Thought-Provoking Gifts

Christmas Gift Guide 2019: The Alternative Gifts Edit
If your Christmas shopping list involves buying gifts which are practical, thought-provoking and useful in some way, this short but sweet alternative edit is here to give you a couple of ideas!

Re-Usable Coffee Cups and Drinks Bottles
Reusable Coffee Cups and Drinks Bottles

Whilst many of us have already got the memo about ditching single-use plastic drinks cups and bottles, there are still some people who haven't gotten around to buying an alternative yet. Fret not! You can give them a helping hand in the right direction by gifting them their very own reusable coffee cup or bottle, and help save millions of tons of unnecessary single-use waste from going to landfill every year. Loads of shops sell them on the high street, supermarkets stock them, and I even found them by the till recently at my local petrol station, so they're super easy to find and pick up.

Diversity Books Subscription

There are lots of book subscription boxes out there, but one that I've been particularly taken with recently is a newbie called Heady Mix. Heady Mix focuses on showcasing characters and writers from underrepresented groups including women, race, disabilities, LGBTQI+ and more, which is a great way to promote diversity whilst finding something new and interesting to read.

They have a range of subscription options depending on how much you want to spend each month, with prices starting at just £12 (including UK postage). In the photo above is their October Heady Mix box* themed on Afrofuturism, which includes two novels and a specially compiled anthology. Sign up here

Kid-Friendly Stockings - Bamboo Toothbrushes

I've seen a recent trend on social media of parents shunning the typical plastic consumer 'tat' that are marketed at their kids, and instead, making them a Christmas stocking which is full of useful products to help kickstart family conversations about the importance of protecting the environment. With so many young kids being more aware of the problems that the world is facing these days thanks to movements like Extinction Rebellion and programmes such as Blue Planet, I think it's a pretty cool idea!

One item that you can include in their stocking is the much-loved bamboo toothbrush. This sustainable, biodegradable, plastic-free alternative helps to represent how easy it is to change daily habits with just one product. And again, this is an easy item to shop for on the high street or online.

 The Healthy Tea Gift

To round off this edit I wanted to include something that I will always appreciate receiving myself and that's tea! Matcha Green Tea is perhaps the healthiest tea that you can find and it's packed full of heart-healthy antioxidants which have a wide range of proven benefits. It also gives you a boost of energy but has a much lower caffeine content than regular coffee, so you can avoid those annoying post-coffee jitters! Try making a classic Matcha Latte (recipe here) or use some in baking and treat yourself to these delicious Matcha Green Tea & Lemon Breakfast Muffins (recipe here).

The perfect starter kit is this Pure Chimp Matcha Green Tea Gift Set* (£29.95, link) which comprises of a full-size jar of their excellent Matcha Green Tea, a stainless steel measuring spoon and a bamboo whisk and holder.

Are you shopping for useful and practical Christmas gifts this year?

Christmas Gift Guide 2019: Highstreet Stocking Fillers For NYE Party Girls - Nails Edit

Friday, 15 November 2019

Christmas Gift Guide 2019: Stocking Fillers For Party Girls - Nails Edit
Looking for stocking fillers or secret Santa ideas for that gal in your social circle/office who just can't wait for the biggest party of the year? This special Nails Edit shares some affordable options with everything featured £15 or under!

Christmas Gift Guide 2019: Stocking Fillers For Party Girls - Nails Edit
Leighton Denny Large Crystal Nail File* (£15.50, link)
OK, so I'm cheating a little bit by including this as it's 50p over the £15 mark, however, there is a smaller Crystal Nail File from Leighton Denny that you can pick up for £12.50 if you're sticking to a secret Santa budget! I think this is a good choice for that person who has everything, but who adores manicures and all things nails. It's guaranteed to last a lifetime and has been described as the 'Rolls Royce' of nails files, winning numerous awards, so why not invest in the best?! You can also pick it up from Boots and stock up on your loyalty points - win-win!

Leighton Denny Nail Polish* (£12, link)
A luxury, high-quality nail polish is something that can take pride of place on a makeup junkie's vanity table and with a huge variety of on-trend colours and finishes to choose from, there's something for everyone who loves playing with nail polish. My top pick would be the shade above which is called Fedora from Leighton Denny's new AW 19/20 collection. It's a stunning, rich, warm and muted purple cream that goes with everything. Heads up - M&S have currently got these in on a 3 for 2 offer if you're looking to purchase multiple stocking fillers.

Christmas Gift Guide 2019: Stocking Fillers For Party Girls - Nails Edit
KISS Glam Fantasy & Gel Fantasy Nail Sets* (£7.99 each, link)
You can't beat a set of eye-catching falsies for that all-important NYE party and these ready-to-wear nails can be worn with nail glue or applied with adhesive tabs. There are loads of different designs and shades available in both the Glam Fantasy and Gel Fantasy ranges from KISS, so you'll be simply spoilt for choice! Both ranges have a realistic gel nail effect with an ultra-smooth finish to help you party the night away.

imPRESS Press-On Manicure Sets* (£7.99, link)
If you're looking for a less OTT nail kit, why not try the imPRESS Press-On Manicure Sets? These super easy to apply falsies come in a shorter length which makes them more wearable for most people, and they still offer the benefits of a gorgeous gel nail finish. I really like these for special occasions and they're great for those who aren't too confident at painting their own nails. Like the KISS sets above, these are also currently on offer in Superdrug.

Foodie Friday: Sponge Vegan Carrot Cake review #CakeDelivery

Foodie Friday: Sponge Vegan Carrot Cake review
Something a little different for this week's Foodie Friday feature, as I haven't wanted to switch my oven on thanks to the blistering hot weather, I've decided to review a cake instead! Meet the latest addition to Sponge.co.uk's tasty range of homemade cakes - the Vegan Carrot Cake!

Special occasions call for cake, but if you can't personally make it to the event for whatever reason, there's always the fuss-free and stress-free option of letting someone else do all the hard work and make a cake for you. Better still, why not have a cake delivered straight to the recipient?

Sponge offers a wide variety of delicious cakes which are all handmade at their bakery in Holt, Norfolk, and they can send a cake to any address in the UK with next-day delivery as standard. The cakes are made using high-quality local ingredients and they have something for everyone, with classic favourites such as Victoria Sponge, Bakewell, and Coffee cakes, alongside contemporary flavours like Gin and Tonic and Rocky Road. You can even make your own personalised cake, order a gluten-free cake, or try a cake with lots of different flavours - yum!

Foodie Friday: Sponge Vegan Carrot Cake review
Foodie Friday: Sponge Vegan Carrot Cake review
So when Sponge got in touch to ask if I'd like to review one of their cakes, I had to say yes of course (I mean, who would say no, really?) and after some umming and ahhing, I decided to try their new Vegan Carrot Cake

The cake arrived on time and was delivered via a DHL courier in sturdy packaging that protected the cake perfectly during transit. There was only one piece of plastic film which covered the cake itself to keep it fresh, and the rest of the packaging materials were recyclable cardboard.

Opening up the box, I quickly realised that the cake was a lot bigger than I had initially expected - it was huge and had a hefty weight to it! The Vegan Carrot Cake serves 8 people but the portion sizes are definitely on the generous side as I was able to cut some pretty big slices so it could certainly serve more.

Foodie Friday: Sponge Vegan Carrot Cake review
But I know what you want to know - how did it taste? AMAZING.

Sponge's Vegan Carrot Cake is perfectly soft and moist, with lots of Walnuts and Sultanas throughout adding some extra flavour and texture. The blend of spices was spot on with Nutmeg coming through the strongest and I could taste subtle hints of Vanilla too. I really enjoyed the tangy Lemony frosting, and perhaps my only criticism is that I wished there was a layering of frosting in the middle of the cake to break up the sheer density of the sponge (and also to ensure that vegans don't miss out as the regular Carrot Cake from Sponge includes this).

Overall, the cake received many compliments from family and friends who enjoyed helping me to taste it and everyone said that they couldn't tell the difference with it being vegan and dairy-free, so I look forward to seeing additional flavours added to Sponge's vegan cake range in the near future!

Sponge Vegan Carrot Cake* (for 8 people, £14.75, link)

[N.B: All of Sponge's cakes are made in the same bakery and whilst they do everything that they can to minimise the risk of cross-contamination, this cannot be 100% guaranteed]

Introducing: Yen Candles - 100% Organic Soy Wax Candle in Lemongrass review

Yen Candles - 100% Organic Soy Wax Candle in Lemongrass review
I was thrilled to discover a new company called Yen Candles via Instagram recently, and you are going to want to add this brand to your gifting wishlist ASAP.

I love to give luxury handmade candles as gifts, mainly because of two reasons. Firstly, virtually everyone that I know always enjoys receiving them, and secondly, there's that old shopping mantra of 'buying one for someone else means that I can buy one for me', right?!

Needless to say, my home is filled with candles from various brands, but over the years I have begun to seek out more of these wax-based beauties from smaller, independent and niche companies because they often specialise in creating candles that are 100% natural. I'll never forget the day when a friend brought me a ludicrously expensive Diptique candle and I had to hide my disappointment when I found out that it was made from cheap paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances (both of which contain known carcinogens, so you know, not the kinda stuff you want to be breathing in or have floating around in your living room atmosphere...).

So if you're looking for a healthier alternative, natural soy wax candles are the way forward. They burn 'cleanly', so no nasty black soot or harmful toxins will be emitted, allowing you to fully enjoy the mindfulness benefits of lighting a candle, or just the simple pleasure of scenting your home.

Yen Candles - 100% Organic Soy Wax Candle in Lemongrass review
Yen Candles are made from 100% natural, organic and GMO-free Soy Wax and are hand-poured in my hometown of Stoke-on-Trent. They are also cruelty-free and vegan-friendly, as well as being environmentally sound too; all of Yen Candles' wonderful plastic-free packaging is made from recycled and recyclable materials, and their wooden wicks are sourced from FSC managed forests.

I was kindly sent their Organic Lemongrass Essential Oil Candle and I've been besotted with the scent ever since. Lemongrass has always been one of my favourite Summer fragrances due to its uplifting and zingy nature - it manages to make me smile whenever I smell it, even if I'm having a bad day!

The candle's fragrance is composed entirely from essential oils (so no synthetic fragrances here) and it has an impressive scent throw, even when you take into account its large 340g size. Lifting the lid and lighting the two wooden wicks was such a pleasure, especially as wooden wicks produce a rather satisfying crackling sound which I'm sure is popular amongst ASMR fans.

Currently, Lemongrass is the only scent available from Yen Candles, but I'm sure more will be in development shortly, so keep an eye on their Etsy shop below.
