Bot bug

[edit]

Getting anywhere on that pywikibot problem? Maybe it's got too long a list of things to work on, and that fills up memory? It's hard to imagine logging so much that it fills up anything like the amount of memory that programs tend to be given these days. Dicklyon (talk) 06:36, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Dicklyon: I haven't had a chance to work on it, sorry (currently in the middle of moving to a new house). Bsoyka (tcg) 01:54, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Have a good move! Dicklyon (talk) 02:19, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dicklyon: Hey! Forgot to update here, but I did get the bot working. I think it was the logging, as when I stopped most of the logs all seemed to work again. (And the move went great too!) Unpinning this section now to let it archive naturally unless there's anything else! Bsoyka (tcg) 20:35, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's great! Thanks! Can I see the logs, as I've almost forgotten the scope of what we were doing. And would you be interested in doing more such, e.g. for links to over-capitalized 2020 United States Census (and previous years)? Dicklyon (talk) 20:48, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind logs. I see from the contribs that it did about 3000 today. The plan is to keep doing about that many daily? I'm glad your move was good. Dicklyon (talk) 20:55, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dicklyon: The plan for this one is 1,000 daily per the BRFA. I'd be happy to implement similar tasks like that, as it should be fairly easy to do, assuming the tasks are given proper community consensus and relevant BRFAs. (For example, that census task alone could affect another ~38,000 pages; that absolutely deserves its own discussion and approval.) Do you happen to have links handy to any discussions about the capitalization of "census"? Bsoyka (tcg) 22:37, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely need the BRFA for such a task. Maybe they'll agree that the discussion at Talk:2020 United States census/Archive 1#Requested move 16 November 2020 is enough. Dicklyon (talk) 00:05, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dicklyon: I don't think an RM thread alone is enough to establish consensus on this. Compared to the NFL draft RfC, which showed consensus on changes to article text and titles, the RM technically only shows consensus on changes to titles. Given the amount of discussion over this fact in the other bot request, I think a defined consensus for changing article text is needed, perhaps at WP:VPR. Changing titles = editing 25 articles; simple enough. Changing text = editing 37,982 articles; not so simple. Bsoyka (tcg) 01:32, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let's see if this goes anywhere useful: WP:VPP#Fixing over-capitalization by bot. Dicklyon (talk) 04:00, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Before doing or making any comments first check what they did with Bangladeshi students. If you think they did right then I have nothing to say. If you think they did wrong then you should recommend those pages for deletion. Othalowaitz (talk) 01:35, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Othalowaitz: I'm not familiar with the subject area, but I am familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. As an encyclopedic project, Wikipedia does not care about what you or I think is "right" or "wrong." We care about what is notable and share information as provided in reliable sources. As such, attempts to hijack or "delete" pages like you're doing, removing that information from reliable sources, is absolutely not tolerated. Please see WP:RGW for more information, and stop your attempts to "right great wrongs" as that pages describes it. Bsoyka (tcg) 01:41, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Idaho State Veterans Cemetery

[edit]

On 3 August 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery faced criticism in 2014 when it did not allow a lesbian couple to be buried together? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Idaho State Veterans Cemetery), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi Ben! Do you have experience reviewing article about musicians? I saw you at the tea house, it says you contribute to many areas. I have been making contributions to wikipedia recently, to the unrepresented areas in entertainment. I had discussions with other editors about this draft on the talk page here of this editor. Many agreed it meets the WP:BIO The editor who reviewed it does not feel confident reviewing it, as they are not sure like me. I made a lot of improvements, and red to keep it neutral.

I think it is article number 4 or so I made. I never made articles about a musicians. J2009j (talk) 07:35, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@J2009j: Hey there! I'll take a look at it soon. I'm sure you can understand why I might be a bit hesitant to approve it quickly given the long list of declines and comments from other experienced reviewers. Bsoyka (tcg) 15:13, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I looked for more sources after that, and added all. J2009j (talk) 15:46, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@J2009j: Hey—I finally got a chance to take a closer look. I'd lean toward approval, but I think I feel the same as CFA in my hesitance due to the potential issues with the independence/reliability of the sources per your discussion with him. The Latin Grammy nomination makes a good argument for his notability, but I'm just not quite certain enough to review it either way. I'm sorry to disappoint you further here, but I'm sure someone will get to it again soon enough. Apologies again, and best of luck with this one! Bsoyka (tcg) 04:11, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jvn49 (03:19, 4 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello, I have changed an article, but i forgot to sign in firstly. I would like my IP address to be hidden and replace with my account or the edit to be deleted. If possible please help me with it. --Jvn49 (talk) 03:19, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jvn49: Hey there—welcome to Wikipedia! You can request that your IP address be hidden through a process known as oversight. Just reach out to the oversight team and explain the situation there with a link to the edit. From my experience, they usually respond pretty quickly. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns, and happy editing! Bsoyka (tcg) 03:28, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

[edit]

Hey Ben, somebody banned my page for me literally not adding one sentence. You can check out my page VIA profile I think, but it's called How A Black Bear Nearly Caused Nuclear War- which the US government verified- along with many other organisations, and CHATGPT. please help in this case. Apparently it was because it was a hoax.. I said there was a supposed soviet saboteur but it turned out to be a bear. Nuclear war nearly started because the planes wereon Defcon 2 and the alert sent out because they thought it was a saboteur the Soviets were trying to destroy the nukes in the nuclear arsenal, where this event takes place. So apparently I didnt explicitly say that, but the context is more than enough..all that was needed was a slight edit. I said straight after the soviet saboteur, they saw a black bear and that was nearly the cause of nuclear war. I forgot to mention they were both the same character. Couldve just asked me, referring to the guy who banned it, but I guess not. WikipedianAncientHistorian (talk) 03:29, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@WikipedianAncientHistorian: Hey! Please see this response on your talk page explaining why a separate article about this is not needed. I'd assume the article was originally tagged for deletion because it lacks any reliable sources in the article. Also, for future reference, ChatGPT is unreliable. Question from Poeticdiligence (17:09, 6 August 2024)

[edit]

I'm just diving into editing and creating articles. I want to expand and draft articles dealing with historic theatres and authors. How long approximately does it take to get your drafts review? I saw 3 months. Wanted to see how accurate that is. Thanks in advance for any help. --Poeticdiligence (talk) 17:09, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Poeticdiligence: Hey! The timeline for draft review really isn't set in stone, because reviewers can handle drafts in any order. The current 3-month estimate is based on when the earliest unapproved draft was submitted, so it's generally a "maximum" wait time.
I've gone ahead and reviewed your current draft, Draft:Judah Mahay, and I declined it because it doesn't use a neutral tone. This is hard to do, of course, when writing about yourself or people you're close to, which is why we generally advise against writing autobiographies or other articles with which you have a conflict of interest. In general, if you're notable enough, someone else who isn't connected to you will write about you eventually. I also personally advise against creating new articles when you're new to Wikipedia, for reasons I've outlined in this essay.
I know this isn't exactly what you want to hear, but I recommend stepping away from trying to write about yourself and your family, and try contributing somewhere else. Wikipedia has 6,864,056 articles—there has to be one that interests you somewhere! Bsoyka (tcg) 17:15, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is a great help. Thanks. I'll focus on editing other pieces for awhile. I have revised the article and made it significantly more neutral and encyclopedic. I hope that is sufficient. Thank you again. I look forward to see how I contribute to other articles in the future. Poeticdiligence (talk) 18:03, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Poeticdiligence: It's a bit closer, but I'm still not sure it's ready for approval yet. On a related note, another concern I have is notability; see here. Looking at the list of sources, many of them don't meet our reliability or independence criteria, which isn't necessarily bad, but it means those sources don't prove your notability. What do you think are the three best sources in your article that are independent of you, reliable in their content, and significantly cover you rather than passing mentions? Bsoyka (tcg) 18:41, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great question:
I have three significant sources that center on me or my work.
The acceptance into the internationally acclaimed Artist Residence at the Watermill Center.
https://www.watermillcenter.org/artists-2010/
Pro-paying publication of "Soul Requisition."

https://www.27east.com/arts/artifacts-at-watermill-center-come-to-life-in-an-action-tale-from-a-writer-in-residence-1372925/
And two that are significant sources with passing mentions.
Judging for the Million Writers Award by storySouth.
https://www.jasonsanford.com/jason/2012/05/20/million-writers-award-notable-stories-of-2011
Honored Mention for the Writers of the Future Contents.

@Poeticdiligence: I appreciate you taking the time to find those! I'm still not quite sure, but I think you're much closer to approval now. I'll leave it to another reviewer to make the call. In the meantime, I recommend you go through and remove anything in the draft not directly supported by a source—there seem to be a few paragraphs sprinkled throughout with no citations. Bsoyka (tcg) 21:13, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All done! Just added a bunch more citations and deleted a few items. Thank you so much. Poeticdiligence (talk) 21:53, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On 7 August 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hadi Tiranvalipour, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status.
