Clermont County was established in 1800, making it Ohio's eighth oldest county. The name, meaning "clear mountain" was given to the area by French explorers in the 17th century. Its county seat is the town of Batavia.

The county's first seat was the village of Williamsburg, which was also the first settler village to be founded in the area (1796). Later, the seat was briefly moved to the Ohio River town of New Richmond.
