Govalle is a term derived from original Swedish settlers who raised cattle and sheep in the area, and is a dialectal Swedish phrase roughly translatable as "good grazing."

  • No, the public housing projects are north of this area on Rosewood at Webberville. This is a neighborhood in transition or from blight to cookie-cutter upscale urban. For some it's a bad thing because property values and taxes are skyrocketing making it un-affordable for lower income people. Lot's of old houses and buildings are being torn down to make way for new homes, condos, etc. People who have lived here for generations are struggling to retain the original ethnic threads in tact; those of the Latino and African American communities. Govalle is a textbook case of "gentrification".
  • Correction to my other post. There is a public housing site one block east of Plaza Saltillo Station.
