Butler County was named for an early US Army General (General Richard Butler), who served in the Revolutionary War. Richard Butler died in Ohio while fighting the Indians, who resisted occupation of their lands.

Butler County's seat is the city of Hamilton.

Butler County shares a border with Indiana, and a few communities straddle the state line.
