Located on the Missouri River 75 miles upstream from Bismarck, N.D. Garrison Dam is one of the largest rolled earth-fill dams in the world.
Garrison Dam was constructed as part of the Pick-Sloan Plan for development of the upper Missouri River Basin. Construction on the $294 million dam project began in 1947 and closure of the embankment occurred in April 1953. Earthwork was completed in the fall of 1954.
