Joliet is a small city of over 100,000 people. It is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago, just east of the junction of US Interstates 55 and 80.
The city's name honors the French explorer, Louis Joliet, who explored the region in the late 17th century.
The city is best known as the former home of the Illinois State Pentitentiary, which was one of the best-known prisons in the U.S. due to the preponderance of Chicago mobsters who were incarcerated there in the 1920s and 30s.
