Capital of Neamt County . It is also the capital of the Nord-Est (North-East) development region, which consists of six Moldavian counties.
The piatra toponym (meaning rock in Romanian) was always part of the settlement's name throughout its history. Other names that the city has been called are: Piatra lui Crăciun (Christmas Rock, thus also corresponding to the Hungarian name of the city, "Karácson-Kő"); Târgu Piatra (Rock Fair, Rock Market) (in the Middle Ages) or simply Piatra to which was added the county name Neamț (Neamț = German), to distinguish it from towns in other counties of the same name.
As of 2011 census data, Piatra Neamț has a population of 77,393, a decrease from the figure recorded at the 2002 census(104,000), making it the 25th largest city in Romania. The final results will probably show a population around 80,000
The city is first mentioned by a Russian Chronicle (1387-1392) and by Sigismund of Luxembourg.s expedition into Moldova in the year 1395. It is mentioned that on July 31st 1431, Alexandru the Good One gave the city of Piatra lui Craciun as a gift to the Bistrita Monastery.
At the beginning of the 17th century Piatra was an important economic center. Over time the city.s economy changed from an agricultural base to a more diversified economy. This diversification of the economy made the city the most important in the Neamt County . On November 8th 1841 Gheorghe Asachi opened a paper factory in the city making it the first in Moldova . In 1832 the first public school is opened and in 1871 the first theatre opened.
The city of Piatra-Neamt is first mentioned in 1387 by the name KAMENA (Piatra) in a Russian list. In the year 1431 it is known as Targul de la Piatra lui Craciun and in 1453 it gets the status of a crown city. Stephen the Great builds here a regal domain.
The city was named Piatra until the year 1859 when the word Neamt is added becoming Piatra Neamt . This measure was necessary in order to prevent being confused with other cities/localityes that had the same name.
