The City of Crawfordville, GA is named for William H. Crawford, U.S. Senator, U.S. minister to France, Secretary of War, and Secretary of the Treasury. Crawfordville is the county seat of Taliaferro County (pronounced "taw-liver" or "toliver").

Noted as the home of Alexander H. Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate States of America, 1861-1865. His home, Liberty Hall, is a museum at A. H. Stephens Historic Park, which is within the Crawfordville city limits.

Several movies have been partially filmed in Crawfordville, including "Sweet Home Alabama" with Reese Witherspoon, "Paris Trout", and others.
