Holne Chase is a dominating area of broad leaf woodland sitting on as strategic bend of the Dart hence the remains of an Iron Age hill fort its centre. Though the chase was a popular with pleasure coaching and walks in the Victorian times, today the entire place is now PRIVATE and owned by the Holne Chase Hotel (no longer catering and sold off as holiday accommodation). According to folklore and legend, the chase is haunted by a Norman hunting party and the area is also littered with dangerous mine workings. The word chase is old English for hunting grounds.
