ship, cargo
Laid down in 1953 as a straight-deck Laker for the Oglebay Norton Co., the American Valor began her trading life on the Great Lakes as the SS Armco and continued her service in her original configuration until 1982 when she was converted into a self-unloader.
Continuing to serve Oglebay Norton through their 2006 merger with American Steamship Company, the Armco was renamed SS American Valor by her new owners and continued to operate throughout the Lakes until the 2008 economic recession brought about her idling and layup here in Toledo. Remaining in layup through the 2017 shipping season, the American Valor was sold to Algoma Steamship Company and reflagged Canadian.
