town, district
Sedgley Urban District was a local authority which was created in 1894 from half of the manor of Sedgley (the other half of which was placed in Coseley Urban District).
Sedgley UDC incorporated the areas of Sedgley, Upper Gornal, Lower Gornal, Gornalwood and Woodsetton. On its formation, the district was a largely rural area made up of several villages, but by the time Sedgley UDC ceased to exist when split between Wolverhampton, Dudley and Seisdon in 1966, the district had developed into a town due to extensive housebuilding (private and council) since 1920.Sedgley town and electoral ward today are in the Dudley Metropolitan Borough, formed in 1974 (principally from the combination of Dudley, Stourbridge & Halesowen County Boroughs), and which forms a constituent part of the modern metropolitan county of the West Midlands of England.
Historically a part of Staffordshire, Sedgley was formerly an ancient manor composed of several smaller villages, including Gornal, Gospel End, Woodsetton, Ettingshall, Coseley and Brierley (now called Bradley), before the Sedgley Urban District was formed in the late 19th century. It was merged into the Dudley County Borough in 1966, which was later abolished to form the metropolitan borough.
Today the principal neighborhoods in the Sedgley district include : Bull Ring, High Arcal Estate, Cotwall End, Brownswall Estate, Northway; and these are represented on the Dudley MBC through the electoral wards of Upper Gornal & Woodsetton and Gornal, as well as the Sedgley ward itself (see outline map above).
