Constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1908-1913, the present Black Rock Lock is 625ft long, 70ft wide and has a depth of 21.6ft over the sills. Built to facilitate passage to and from the Erie Canal from the Niagara River, the lock has a total rise/drop of 5 feet and completes it's chamber filling/emptying in approximately 11 minutes.
The lock is the first/final lock in the modern Erie Canal/New York State Barge Canal system.
