One of the oldest rock castles of Great Duchy of Lithuania, it was part of defensive line Navahrudak-Kreva-Medininkai-Trakai. Gediminas, Grand duke of Lithuania, ordered to built this castle in min 30ies of 14th century. The castle was captured several times, it suffered mostly from Teutonic knights and Swedish army during Great Northern War (blasted the towers). In 1794 Lida castle grounds served as battle place of Kościuszko Uprising insurgents against Russian army. Thereafter it was abandoned. In 1982 restoration campaign was launched. The red brick was used to denote the newly reconstructed sections. Significant restoration was held in 2010. A museum was created within castle towers.
