  • The Spanish expedition to colonize the Philippines was started by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in 1565 or 13 years after Ferdinand Magellan set foot in the country. Legaspi settled in Cebu. In 1569 he transferred his base to Panay and surveyed the villages of Hamtic and Bugasong, Antique. In 1571 Legaspi transferred to Manila. He divided the country into land grants called encomienda for his fellow Spanish colonizers called encomienderos. Bugasong was given to encomiendero named Pedro Guillen in 1591. Native Bugasongnons were made to pay tribute or tax equivalent to 177 pesetas. In return catholic christianity was sown in Bugasong. In 1776 the first churh was built and the the village became organized by a Spanish Augustinian priest Friar Felix Rioja. At this time Buagsong was frequently attacked by Moro pirates from Mindanao. Rampart-fortress was built in Estaka hill situated at the heart of the poblacion as enclave-refuge for the attacks. Relics of the the fortress are still visible in the hill partly vandalized. In 1740, by Spanish Royal Decree, the town was formally established. In 1898 the Philippine revolution was started by Andres Bonifacio. Gen. Leandro Fullon fought the revolution in Antique. On September 29, 1898, Spanish and Filipino forces clashed in Cabaludan, Bugasong. In 1902 the Americans came. Don Mariano Kabayao became the first elected mayor. In 1942, the Spanish built church and other big buikdings were burned down by the USAFFE to prevent being utilized as shelter by the invading Japanese forces. In 1944 Calixto O Zaldivar, a Major in the Judge Advocate General Services, 65th Inf., PA., was appointed military governor of Antique. Bugasong was the seat of the provincial government. Bugasong gradually developed as a thriving and promising town from then on. (historical notes by Atty. & Dr. Noel R. Condez}
