Built on the site of the Slade School, the newly rebuilt school was named for Fall River's mayor in the 1980s. However, the renaming of the school came with a caveat: Several rooms in the building are named for former schools in the city, including the Belisle Cafeteria, Fowler Gymnasium, Slade Community Room, Healy Library, Osborn Inner Courtyard, and the N.B. Borden Playground.
