Prince Rupert has about 12,000 people and is the land, air, water transportation center of BC's north coast. It is situated about 80 miles south of the U.S. border (Alaska). This is the only Canadian port of the Alaska Marine Highway. From here ferries leave for Seattle, Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka, Petersburg and Wrangell amoung others.
BC Ferries run from here to Port Hardy, a ten-hour voyage, and to Skidegate, on Haida Gwaii (Formerly Queen Charlotte Islands), which is a 5-6-hour voyage. Planes leave from here to Vancouver twice a day, and arrive just as frequently, with float planes flying to the small indian villages around Prince Rupert between once a day, once a week, and every few months.
