Destination America appears at a significant time in the history of American immigration. More so than at any period in the last 100 years, the United States in the first decade of the 21st century is a nation of immigrants. The liberalization of immigration policy in 1965 and subsequent legislation opened the floodgates for a vast new wave of immigrants, one that has brought millions of people to America from parts of the world from which entry was previously denied or severely limited. In 2002, the U.S. Census Bureau pegged the country's foreign-born population at 11.5 percent, not far off the historic high of 15 percent in 1910. |
