User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/112.0
Steps to reproduce:
Opened & closed Firefox
Actual results:
An extra Firefox icon is added on the righthand side of the OS X dock for recently opened programs. This should not happen bc Firefox is already in the dock on the left hand side as a regular/favorite program.
Expected results:
Nothing.

Thanks for the report. This sounds like a macOS problem, but it would help to rule out some potential causes.
Could these be two different Firefox installs? Holding down the command key while clicking an icon on the Dock will open the application in Finder allowing you to see which application on the filesystem it refers to.
Are you using Firefox Beta along with the standard release of Firefox? Beta has the same icon and might be able to cause this.
Have you tried restarting your computer? Or alternatively, quitting the Dock to make it restart would be a good test. You can quit the Dock from the Activity Monitor app by finding the Dock process and clicking the X icon.

I can confirm:
- There is only one install of Firefox, no beta.
- The dock behavior persists across reboots/power cycle
- It does not happen on OS X 12.6.2
- It does not happen with other applications like Thunderbird, FCPX, PhotoShop, Handbrake, Logic, Chrome, etc.
- This behavior was not observed on the same OS (13.3.1) with Firefox 111.0.1
This would appear to be something specific to the release of the browser in combination with OS X 13.3.1

I can confirm this bug also exists on macOS 11.7.5, so it is not specific to macOS 13.
In reply to Haik's question, command-clicking the extra Firefox icons - i.e., show in Finder - indicates that it refers to the original Firefox application (located for me at /Applications/Firefox.app).
So there isn't a second Firefox install that these extra icons are linking to.
Hope this provides the information necessary to fix the bug.

Thanks for the information.
I have not been able to reproduce this yet, but one explanation may be that the cause is a recent codesigning change we made. It could cause macOS to identify new versions of Firefox with the fix as different than previous versions in some cases. This would not explain how it could be different for different macOS versions though.
One more thing that might help debug this for now:
Does the problem return if you remove all Firefox icons from the dock? Removing it from both the main part of the dock and the recent applications section.

The problem persists upon removing all Firefox icons from the dock - both the main part and recent applications section.
New icons continue to be generated on the recent applications side after quitting, which all point to the main program (/Applications/Firefox.app).
For another user who has experienced the same problem, please see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1827659.

Yes, the problem persists: I removed all FF icons from the dock, rebooted just to be sure, and then launched by double clicking on the icon in the applications folder. I found it interesting upon launch an icon would be put on the right hand side of the dock like one would expect and upon closing the browser, another icon was added to the dock.

I confirm having the same bug. Additional FF icons appear, up to 4, when i quit FF.
I use MacOS Big Sur 11.7 on 2 years old Mac Book Pro.
I rebooted; have only 1 FF installed, bug appeared after update to 112.0, bug persists after removing the double FF icons from dock,

With bug 1827486, we shipped a change in Firefox 111 that may have affected dock behavior. Specifically we changed the plugin-container child process to use LSBackgroundOnly
instead of LSUIElement
in file Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/plugin-container.app/Contents/Info.plist
. We're still looking into whether or not this is the cause.

I am able to reproduce this problem if I turn on the setting Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed
in Firefox preferences.
For those hitting this bug, do you also have this setting turned on?

Yes, I have that setting checked. I set FF to not retain history/cookies/cache/etc. so it's as clean as possible on every launch.

This problem appears to be a regression introduced by bug 1788986. The problem is not reproducible after setting dom.quotaManager.backgroundTask.enabled
to false in about:config.

Can confirm. The process itself is expected as the cleanup is now happening on a background process by default, but we shouldn't show that in the dock. I wonder how we can achieve that.
Nick, do you have any idea? Maybe we should set this on macOS? https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appkit/nsapplication/activationpolicy/accessory

There's already a relevant code: https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/rev/7e1f58e993f362d5d16bd1230a4417ebb2aa07b3/widget/cocoa/nsAppShell.mm#346 and that perhaps should also apply for background tasks.

#ifdef MOZ_BACKGROUNDTASKS
if (BackgroundTasks::IsBackgroundTaskMode()) {
[NSApp setActivationPolicy:NSApplicationActivationPolicyProhibited]; // Or Accessory
}
#endif
This still doesn't prevent the extra dock item. Hmm.

So I'm totally confused. https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/rev/7e1f58e993f362d5d16bd1230a4417ebb2aa07b3/toolkit/xre/nsAppRunner.cpp#4023-4025 is already setting the process as background process but that does not stop the dock to add the item (except the item is never shown as active)
Does it mean the call should be earlier than something? 🤷

Changing the activation policy at runtime is going to be too late. The need for a Dock icon must be known before the process is started. This is done by looking at the Info.plist in the .app bundle.
To get a Dock-less process, you need to run it from an .app bundle which specifies that it doesn't want a Dock icon. This is the original reason why we have plugin-container.app: because we did not want a Dock icon for content processes. So for background tasks, we either need to use plugin-container.app or make a new .app bundle similar to it.

I thought I had done what was required to have no dock icon on macOS; sorry for the late breaking issue.
Does plugin-container.app
know that it is different than Firefox.app
in any meaningful way, or is it just different macOS metadata around the same code, and the runtime changes are due to command line arguments? If that's the case, I can think of no particular issue launching plugin-container.app --backgroundtask ...
. It's just one more annoyance to launching background tasks.

I've managed to reproduce this issue using Nightly 114.0a1(2023-04-13) and Firefox 113.0b3 on macOS 11 ARM and macOS 13 ARM following the STR from Comment 28.
Verified as fixed on the latest Nightly 114.0a1(2023-04-17) and Firefox 113.0b4 versions under same configuration where the issue no longer persists.
