Open
There have been a couple of standards created explicitly for information for link previews.
OEmbed
- oEmbed - since 2009. However it requires an extra endpoint (URL, different language(s) etc.)
Open Graph Protocol
Though proposed and maintained exclusively by Facebook, their Open Graph Protocol is licensed with a OWFa license which is quite open (allows derivative works etc.)
OGP is far more well established since it works in HTML, and Facebook immediately shows results using it.
