China had approximately 142 operational satellites in orbit as of September 1, 2015, compared to about 10 in 2000 and 35 in 2008. Approximately 95 of these satellites are owned and operated by Chinese defense organizations, including the PLA, the Ministry of Defense, and various entities under the state-owned space industry conglomerates. For comparison, the United States had approximately 549 active satellites in orbit and Russia has approximately 131 active satellites in orbit.
