Abstract: The PAVE PAWS and the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) radars are phased array radars which support the Early Warning System (EWS). These radars operate at UHF and were designed to detect and track large numbers of objects, as part of the then perceived threat, i.e., a massive ballistic missile attack of hundreds of ICBMs/SLBMs. Discrimination and tracking of individual objects were not optimized in their design. In our recent work over the past two years in support of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO), we have noted that the radar cross section (RCS) data generated by a PAVE PAWS radar appears to contain information that might be exploited by using pattern recognition techniques. It is our purpose to study and present techniques by which this information can be extracted and exploited against today's perceived threat, which is a limited ballistic missile attack, during which the discrimination and tracking of individual objects becomes a prime requirement.
