FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON - “Memorial Day {Freebie}”

by Evenings With Drake
Pre-Kindergarten - 1st Grade

If your students could say anything to a fallen member of the United States Military on Memorial Day, what would it be? This LOW-PREP free resource was created to give your kiddos an opportunity to write a loving, caring, and supportive Memorial Day sentiment to a (fictional or real) member of the United States Armed Forces who is no longer living.

How It Works: After choosing a United States Armed Forces member (Air Force Airman, Army Private, Coast Guard Officer, Marine Corps Officer, or Navy Seaman), students are given a list of fifteen (15) heartfelt statements. One statement is selected and neatly written on the lines provided. Students then draw a picture of themselves and color the picture using crayons or colored pencils. SUGGESTION: As an extension to this activity, you may wish to have your students write letters or thank you notes to fallen, current, or retired members of the United States Armed Forces.

**This resource has been updated as of March 2021**

What's Included?

*One (1) “From My Heart” List of 15 Heartfelt Sentiments

*Five (5) “From My Heart” Heartfelt Message printables

Gentle Suggestions/Tips/Reminders:

*Because this resource deals with fallen (deceased) members of the United States Military, you may want to have a brief discussion with your students about the significance and meaning of Memorial Day PRIOR to the completion of any pages within this product.

*REMINDER: Each Memorial Day sentiment is no more than seven (7) words in length.

*Images of the military personnel may be colored using crayons and color pencils. SUGGESTION: Have the students use MULTICULTURAL OR SKIN-TONED colored pencils and crayons when coloring military personnel (or themselves).

*Images of military personnel of different ranks have been included with this resource. Depending on the academic levels and needs of your kiddos, you may wish to explain that a rank is defined as a certain job or position within the U.S. military.

*REMINDER: Feel free to use this resource as a way of honoring U.S. military veterans on Veterans Day, as well.

If you download the above, show some feedback love!! :)

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON - “Compare & Contrast Veterans Day & Memorial Day Patriotic Venn Diagrams”

by Margo Gentile
2nd - 5th Grade

Here's something a little different to do with the kids for Veterans Day and/or Memorial Day.

Choose from 4 "fancy" Venn diagrams (2 color; 2 B&W). The B&W diagram can be colored in once the students jot down the differences and similarities between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. A diagram even has writing lines!

These Venn diagrams are actually part of a much larger recource:

The larger product includes the 4 Venn diagrams, lots and lots of info about the 2 holidays (organized and easy to read/comprehend info which lends itself to Venn diagram completion), a "notes" graphic organizer, timeline fill-ins..... all "sewn up" with a craft. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Compare-and-Contrast-Memorial-Day-and-Veterans-Day-Fantastic-Facts-2566920

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - "In Honor of Soldiers-Every One: A Veteran's or Memorial Day Project"

In Honor of Soldiers-Every One: A Veteran's or Memorial Day Project

By: Connie Casserly
Grades 6-12

In Honor of Soldiers-Every One: A Veteran's or Memorial Day Project

This is a FREE activity to honor and remember all military personnel who died in battle (Memorial Day), and all men and women, living or deceased, who served in the military (Veteran’s Day).

Students select a book to read from the list provided, or one that they choose.  The list given with this project covers all conflicts involving the United States military from the Civil War through Afghanistan and Iraq. After they read the book, students complete two projects: one visual, and the second where they write a letter to an active duty soldier (websites are given for addresses).

Student Directions

Directions: Read a book, fiction or non-fiction, about American men and women who have served the United States by fighting in any war from the Civil War to Afghanistan and Iraq. When you are finished, complete the following two assignments:
1.  Prepare a project relating your knowledge and understanding of the story. This can follow any format. Here are a few ideas: A poster, painting, sculpture, photographic collage, video, skit, song, book report, or project of your choice. For the latter, get your teacher’s approval. These will be due on the date specified by the teacher.
2.  Write a letter to a soldier. Here are two places to find soldiers’ names, to get ideas about what to write and to learn how to address the letters,  check out:
www.operationgratitude.com/letters-to-heroes and www.anysoldier.com/WheretoSend.
NOTE: Show the letter and addressed envelope to the teacher before sending it.
In Honor of Soldiers-Every One: A Veteran's or Memorial Day Project
In Honor of Soldiers-Every One: A Veteran's or Memorial Day Project

Although Memorial Day is not for five weeks, I offer it now so students will have time to read their book of choice and complete the two assignments.

Teachers can also use the activities in this posting if they are reading a military-based book as a class (example: All Quiet on the Western Front- Erich Maria Remarque, The Red Badge of Courage- Stephen Crane, or The Things They Carried- Tim O'Brien).
