As the Inquisitr has previously reported, Sgt. Bergdahl went missing in the mountains of Afghanistan in July of 2009. Reportedly captured by the Taliban, Bergdahl was then turned over to the Haqqani terrorist network in Pakistan. In May, Bergdahl was released as part of a prisoner exchange, in which five Taliban commanders were granted their freedom. Army has finished its investigation of Bowe Bergdahl. As he awaits the conclusion of his case, Bergdahl is performing administrative duties at the base.

Bowe Bergdahl (boh BURG'-dahl) disappeared from his base in Afghanistan. Bergdahl was held captive for five years by the Taliban. The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is expected to be briefed on the report as early as today. Details about the probe's conclusion are closely held. But Bergdahl could face charges of desertion or being absent without leave. The final disposition will determine whether he is charged or gets up to $300,000 in back pay and other benefits.

2014 Is The Year Of The Lie | New York Post

Feminists keep saying that there is a larger truth here that we are suddenly living in a rape culture in which this hideous crime is widely condoned, even though the rate of forcible rate is at its lowest level in 40 years. When such data dont bear out the narrative, activists rely heavily on anecdotal evidence like the Rolling Stone story then say false anecdotes dont matter either. We have a society where rapists are given the benefit of the doubt, often despite overwhelming evidence, wrote Sally Kohn of CNN, adding that [Feminists] cannot apologize for erring on the side of a fair, compassionate and credulous hearing of a womans account. Except being credulous with a liar means you arent being fair to those she is lying about. Lena DunhamPhoto: AP If rape accusations serve as a useful weapon against despised groups, it doesnt matter whether any individual rape story is accurate. Lena Dunham, who said in her book Not That Kind of Girl that she was raped at Oberlin College by Barry, the campuss resident conservative, let this lie simmer for months without anyone calling her on it. Then National Reviews Kevin Williamson wrote that a few seconds of Googling led directly to a prominent Republican who was at Oberlin at the same time as Dunham and has the highly unusual name Barry. This Barry, who was getting increasingly worried that people were whispering that he was a rapist, seemingly had no recourse against Dunhams lie. Though he has never met her, filing suit would make him a public figure, one forevermore associated with rape (albeit a false accusation thereof). It wasnt until he began soliciting donations for a legal fund that Dunhams publisher offered to write a check and Dunham herself finally acknowledged that no Barry had sexually assaulted her.

Frenchman Held 3 Years By Al-qaida Freed In Africa | News-jo

You have a choice between the policy of Mr. Obama, which appears to be not to negotiate and to see hostages killed, and a position of negotiating without admitting it, Alain Marsaud, a conservative French lawmaker, told the BFM television network. Its true that we negotiate, we pay, and we try to get results .... There isnt a single Frenchman who believes Mr. Lazarevic was freed because Mr. Hollande has nice eyes. Another Frenchman kidnapped in Mali in November 2011 along with Lazarevic, Philippe Verdon, was found dead in July 2013. A security official in Mali, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared for his safety, said Lazarevics release came after negotiations to free two al-Qaida fighters arrested in his abduction. The two al-Qaida detainees were transferred to mediators in Niger on Saturday and turned over to al-Qaida, the Malian official said. It was not clear if they remained in Niger.

Advocates for the Huangs suggested the lab report was fabricated and said their request with the Qatari judiciary for a formal investigation went unanswered. Criticism of Qatari justice The case against the Huangs shined a light on the Qatari justice system and drew complaints from the United States. Qatar is a key ally in the U.S.-led coalition against the terror group ISIS and host to many countries' forces involved in airstrikes. The Qatari government also helped the United States secure the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from Taliban captivity this year. Despite the close ties, the State Department expressed concern. Officials requested in October that Qatar's government lift the Huangs' travel ban, allowing them to return to the United States. "The 22 long months of court proceedings following their daughter's tragic death have compounded the tragedy for the Huang family, and it is time now, as the Appeals Court stated, to let the Huangs return home," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement.

Pentagon Prepares For More Detainee Releases From Guantanamo

The Wall Street Journal reports that, after five detainees were transferred last week, there will be another round in December, but defense officials refused to disclose further information on their numbers or nationalities. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Rep. Howard McKeon, R-Calif, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, complained at a recent hearing of an increase in notifications by the administration to lawmakers on coming transfers from the detainment facility. President Obama promised since before he took office that he would close the controversial detention center, a move that has been opposed by many Republicans. The transfers come shortly after the announcement of the resignation of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who was criticized by administration officials who spoke to The Wall Street Journal for moving too slowly to certify detainees for release. Senior officials at the White House are impatient as the presidents term in office draws nearer to its end with the promise of the closure of Guantanamo unfulfilled, according to the Wall Street Journal. House and Senate negotiators are debating whether to revise the rules governing transfers as a part of this years defense authorization bill, which sets Pentagon policy. The House version of the measure has proposed much stricter restrictions on transfers.

Afghan Con Man Rips Off Possible Ransom For Bowe Bergdahl |

Bowe Bergdahl? In May, the Afghan terror group called Haqqani released Bergdahl in exchange for several terrorists held by the US at Guantanamo bay. Now, it appears this was not the way it was supposed to go down. Republican congressman Duncan Hunter is trying to find out if the US tried to pay a ransom to Haqqani in January or February, but that we got ripped off instead. In June, Hunter wrote a letter asking the Pentagon, Central Intelligence, and the FBI to explain. It is my understanding, he wrote, that a transfer occurred that possibly included payment to Haqqani from the Taliban for the receipt of Bergdahl. Then, earlier this month, Hunter wrote to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, asking him to confirm payment to an afghan intermediary who disappeared with the money and failed to facilitate Bergdahls release in return. The policy of the US government is not to pay ransom for the release of military personnel or civilians. And thats probably why the military brass is telling hunter that the money was not ransom, but payment for information about where Delta Force commandos could find Bergdahl. Theres no word on how much the Afghan con man stole, but reports say Bergdahls family was ready to pay $10 million for his release before the White House put a stop to it. Its a good bet someones having an expensive laugh at Uncle Sams expense.

Obama Orders Review Of Us Hostage Policy - St. Joseph News-p

State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said Tuesday that a "small number" of U.S. citizens are still being held by the Islamic State, but refused to provide a specific number. In a letter to Obama Tuesday, California Rep. Duncan Hunter urged the president to task one person within the administration to lead efforts to recover Americans. "It is my firm belief that we are not exhausting the full range of options," wrote Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee. Hunter has said the U.S. tried to pay an Afghan intermediary early this year to free Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from Taliban captivity, but the intermediary disappeared with the money. The Pentagon has denied paying cash, and Bergdahl was eventually returned to the U.S.

Problems During The Hagel Era - Business Insider

The prisoner swap was immediately criticized as Bergdahl may have purposefully deserted his post prior to his capture, and the White House failed to notify Congress thirty days ahead of the exchange as is required by law. Also in May, the Pentagon dispatched troops to Chad to aid in the search for over 200 girls kidnapped by the Nigerian jihadist group Boko Haram. REUTERS/Kevin LamarqueChuck Hagel and Martin Dempsey July 2014 US special operations forces carry out a daring attempt to free Steven Sotloff and James Foley, two American citizens held captive by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). The raid failed to free the captives, who were both executed by the terrorists later in the summer although its existence was leaked to the media in late August as the fight against ISIS heated up. August 2014 Hagel infuriated the White House by contradicting the claims of President Obama that ISIS was equivalent to a junior varsity basketball squad in comparison to established terrorist networks. In Hagel's eyes ISIS remained an "imminent threat to every interest we have." October 2014 Hundreds of US soldiers began to fly to Liberia to fight the rapidly expanding Ebola epidemic in western Africa. Thousands more were expected to be deployed afterwards. Hagel was at odds with the White House at times during the response.
