Kenya has awarded a public-private partnership concession to build power transmission lines to Adani Group and a unit of the African Development Bank.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Kera said Madhabi Puri Buch’s move to trade in listed securities during her SEBI membership is a violation of section 6 of the SEBI Code on Conflict of Interest for Members of Board (2008).
Refuting recent allegations made against her, Sebi chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch said the allegations made against her were "false and misleading".
Madhabi Puri and Dhaval Buch issued a detailed response to the specific allegations levelled by Congress and others. They emphasised that all claims made against them by the companies (clients of Dhaval Buch) are completely untrue, inaccurate, and driven by malicious intent.
"It is unfortunate that questions have been raised regarding the consulting assignments of Dhaval Buch... there seems to be an assumption that when a spouse of a senior government official is appointed as an advisor, it must be attributed to factors beyond professional merit," Buch said in a statement.
The controversy erupted after claims surfaced that the property had been leased to a company linked to Wockhardt, a pharmaceutical giant under SEBI investigation, leading to speculations of a possible conflict of interest.
Congress had recently alleged that the Sebi Chairperson had earned more than Rs 2 crore as rent from a firm linked to the Wockhardt Group. No comments, says the group in response, as Madhabi Puri Buch calls the allegations 'defamatory, false and vexatious'.

Dismissing Hindenburg’s latest allegations, a Adani Group spokesperson said, “We unequivocally reject and deny the baseless allegations. The Adani Group has no involvement in any Swiss court proceedings, nor have any of our company accounts been subject to sequestration by any authority."
Kenya Airport Workers Union claimed that the deal would lead to job losses and “inferior terms and conditions of service” for those who will remain.
