Why get a violin teacher?

It can be very wise and useful to get a tutor in preparation for approaching exams but it is not the only good reason to get one. If you are just starting out learning how to play the violin for example. Having someone already experienced in the instrument and who have experience teaching others how to play, will be able to boost your rate of learning significantly. They will be able to do this by giving you basic pointers that will be the foundation of your learning and will make all of your future efforts much more effective.

It can be very challenging or even daunting to learn a new instrument by yourself through the use of YouTube and other resources. Some concepts and techniques can be hard to figure out yourself and having no guidance will prolong the process and could even result in you no longer being interested in learning.

With the help of a teacher and their guidance, they will be able to help you iron out your mistakes and bad habits early on, making the process much smoother in the future. Since you will have their undivided attention, they will be able to accurately gauge your progress and skill and be able to assign and suggest relevant practice exercises you can do to further aid your learning of the instrument.

The violin and Ireland

The Irish fiddle has been around in Ireland for such a long time that it is to this day still an identifiable part of the culture. The first mentions of a fiddle/violin-like instrument being used in Ireland have been dated back to 1160 and with the modern violin being mentioned in use since the early 1700s.

The fiddle is synonymous with the violin, the only difference is playing style. The fiddle is often used to make fast snappy jigs and tunes and alternative techniques are more often used when playing such as string bending. Whereas a more traditional violin player will stick to the more technical ways of playing music and won’t deviate from the composer’s music.

Some examples of contemporary Irish violin players are Martin Hayes, Julia Clifford, Liz Carroll and Kevin Burke.
