Suicide in Petersburg.
--Captain David F. Hoy, and an, old and well known citizen of Petersburg, committed suicide, on the promises of H. W. Siggins, in Blandford, on Wednesday morning, by shooting himself with a pistol. The Express says:‘ An inquest was held over the remains, when it was ascertained from the testimony of witnesses that the deceased had been in a troubled and partially deranged state of mind for some time past, and had not unfrequently threatened to take his life. He yesterday morning borrowed a revolver from Mr. Garrett, of Blandford, (who did not suspect the use to which he applied it,) and shortly afterwards told Mr. B. H. Evans that he intended to kill himself, and wished him to witness the deed. Mr. Evans remonstrated, but even while doing so the deceased drew his pistol and snapped it at his person. Mr. E. then attempted to get the weapon out of his hands, but being unable to do so, started off in pursuit of aid. Before he had gone far he heard the report of a pistol, and looking behind saw Capt. Hoy sitting on the ground, having (as was afterwards learned) shot himself through the side. He then saw the deceased place the muzzle of the pistol to his head and fire. The deceased lived half an hour after being shot, though he never spoke.
’ Capt. Hoy was about sixty years of age, and was formerly Sheriff of Dinwiddie county, and member of the Common Council of this city. He leaves a wife and several children, two of whom are in the army.
